  • “Blue Moon of Kentucky”—Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Richard D
“Blue Moon of Kentucky”—Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Richard D. Smith (guest post)* Bill Monroe Illuminating a major juncture in American popular music history--the crossroads of country music and rock 'n’ roll–is the “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” Originally composed as a lonesome but lovely waltz by Bill Monroe (1911-1996)--the innovative Rosine, Kentucky-born singer/bandleader/mandolinist who became a pillar of the Grand Ole Opry, was a major figure in the Folk Music Revival and is renowned as “The Father of Bluegrass”--it was later covered by the young Elvis Presley during his first commercial recording sessions. Indeed, it is musically and culturally significant that Presley's first single consisted of his crooning and insinuating version of Delta blues singer/guitarist Arthur Crudup's “That's All Right” on one side and a rollicking rockabilly arrangement (in 4/4 time) of Monroe's waltz on the other. The roots of rock in African American music are well known, but the parallel influence of white country music deserves greater understanding. The story of “Blue Moon of Kentucky” provides this. Bill Monroe’s earliest-known performance of “Blue Moon of Kentucky” was on the Grand Ole Opry on August 25, 1945. Monroe recorded it during his first session for Columbia Records (having previously been on RCA Victor Bluebirds) on September 16, 1946. The session was historic, both for its material and Monroe’s sidemen in the Blue Grass Boys. Participating in their first recordings with Monroe were superb lead vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Lester Flatt and the brilliant and seminal three-finger-style banjo picker Earl Scruggs.

  • The Kentucky Headhunters - Bio
The Kentucky Headhunters - Bio AllMusic & Apple Music Artist Biography by Johnny Loftus The Kentucky Headhunters created a hybrid of honky tonk, blues, and Southern rock that appealed to fans of both rock and country music. The origins of the Kentucky Headhunters lie in 1968, when Fredand Richard Young began playing together with their cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney at the Youngs' grandmother's house. Mark Orr also later joined them. The first incarnation of the band was called the Itchy Brothers, and the group played together informally for over a decade. After about 13 years, the bandmembers began launching separate careers: Richard Young went off to write songs for Acuff-Rose, while Fred Young began touring with country beauty Sylvia. Martin became a member of Ronnie McDowell's band, while Kenney dropped out of music. In 1985, Martin decided to reassemble the Itchy Brothers. When Kenney declined to rejoin the group, Martin remembered Doug Phelps, whom he had met while on tour with McDowell. Phelps joined the new project, which was named the Kentucky Headhunters. Besides Martin and Phelps, the band also included the Young brothers and Doug's brother Ricky Lee Phelps. The Headhunters started playing twice monthly on The Chitlin' Show, a program on Munfordville, Kentucky radio station WLOC. From these 90-minute performances, the Headhunters built up a following. They sent an eight-song demo to Mercury, and soon after, the label signed the group. The original demo tape was remixed, and became the basis of the band's first album, 1989's Pickin' on Nashville, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its release and quickly became a hit.

  • The Marshall Tucker Band
THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. Today, the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label (distributed by Sony/RED) and continues to release new and previously unreleased material. Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band's current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of The Marshall Tucker Band sound. Current members include the highly respected drummer B.B. Borden, a former member of both Mother's Finest and The Outlaws, multi instrumentalist Marcus Henderson of Macon, Georgia, plays flute, saxophone and keyboards in addition to lead and background vocals, Pat Elwood on bass guitar, and Rick Willis on lead guitar and vocals, both of Spartanburg SC, are disciples of the Caldwell Brothers. Acclaimed lead guitarist and vocalist Chris Hicks recently rejoined the band after a two- year absence. Together they present a powerful stage presence as they continue to tour the country and continue to be powerful force in the world of music. The Marshall Tucker Band got its start in Spartanburg, S.C. when Gray teamed up with Tommy Caldwell and Toy Caldwell, Paul T.

  • INYO FACE Is a Five-Member Band from Dalton, Georgia, Who Will Get “In Your Face,” If Needed, to Make Sure You Have Fun and Like Their Brand of Country Southern Rock
INYO FACE is a five-member band from Dalton, Georgia, who will get “in your face,” if needed, to make sure you have fun and like their brand of country southern rock. They will get your attention, and with a name like INYO FACE, you better be very good. And what makes this band very good? Here’s your answer: Each band member was influenced by a different type of music from big band, jazz, blues, western swing, country, southern rock, bluegrass to classical. These influences past along from one member to another are combined into a unique musical style. Most of the lead vocals are done by Don Bradley, with background vocals executed in three and four part harmonies by the other band members. Combined with a strong lead vocal, “INYO harmonies,” outstanding musicianship, and their unique musical style, the group keeps their fans coming back and bringing with them new converts to their music. You will not be bored at their personal appearances. “You will see raw energy, crazy-assed country boys who love entertaining,” says Don Bradley. A good example of this energy laced with spontaneity and humor is Sam Crowe. Sam is the utility musician and the zaniest member of the group, who wrote a song called “Laughing Man” that has only one verse. He sings that one verse and then just laughs hysterically throughout the rest of the song. The laughter from Sam is contagious, and the audience joins in – a definite crowd-pleaser. Sam is also a serious songwriter with two cuts on the Kentucky Headhunters double platinum debut album, “Picking On Nashville.” Most of their original material they just recently recorded with Nashville engineer/producer, George Clinton, is very well received at their club dates where bands tend to be classified as human jukeboxes.
