CANBERRA COLLEGE NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2018 Principal’s Update As the year ends we acknowledge the achievements and farewell our Year 12 cohort for 2018. Canberra College Graduation is on Wednesday 19 December at Upcoming Events the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). Each student will receive their portfolio with their Senior Secondary Certificate and transcripts of studies. We wish our 4 February – 8:45am first students the very best for their future journeys whatever path they select – the day for new students only world of study, work, gap year or travel! 5 February – All students In recent weeks we have celebrated the achievements of students in the Visual start term 1 Arts, Drama Productions, Dance Performances and Hospitality. It was great to 19 February – Welcome to see so many people at these events where students displayed their skills and College Evening 5:30pm talents, and to see the pride of the students in their achievements. Our students looked spectacular and had a wonderful (183kb) time – such a magnificent venue and view. Special thanks go to Ms Claud Ingham who coordinated the event. Clara McArthur who received the Australia Defence Force Long Tan Leadership Award and scholarship. Clara was also on Breakfast on ABC Radio Canberra on Wednesday 28 November to provide a young woman’s insight into politics. ACE Science Mentors 2018 Awards This program pairs students, their area of interest in STEM and external mentors. The awards, presented to students who have completed their project, Presentation of Long Tan Award (Melissa Planten, were presented on Thursday 29 November at the Shine Dome, Australian Clara McArthur and Academy of Science, ANU to: Lieutenant Colonel Eraine La Galle) . Marwa Fahiz (Effectiveness of Drug Inhibitors on Dihydrofolate Reductase) . Quinn Graco (Creating and optimising a Schlieren flow visualization system for a water tunnel) . Elizabeth Hall (using Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization on Rock Wallaby Chromosomes to gain a Better Understanding of Speciation) We wish the Canberra College Volleyball teams all the best as they participate in the National Schools Volleyball Competition to be held in Melbourne 9-14 December. It is also wonderful to read our student voice articles in our newsletters now – a great addition by our students and a real-world media/journalism experience! Staff news Farewell to staff who are either retiring, taking long service leave or moving on to new positions/places. On behalf of the students, staff and school community we thank you for your individual contributions to education over the years, your support for our students and colleagues and wish you all the very best for the future. With thanks to Damien Molony, Shaoli Tang, Lee Morthorpe and Clinton McCulloch. Thank you to our short-term staff members: Michael Dalvean, Angela Wichmann, Miriam Jerrems, Judy van Rijswijk, Tiana Liddell, Lewis Ophel, Tyson Hodge, Emma Addison and Anna Pickering (who is about to have a baby). Erin Clarke will be taking maternity leave next year and we wish her all the best. We also recognise and thank the staff who have performed higher duties over the course of the year; Nathan Schubert (Futures), Murray Chisholm (English/Humanities) and Rachael Radvanyi (Deputy Principal). Luke McKinnon will be taking on the role of ACT Scaling Test (AST) co-ordinator in 2019 and we thank Sanjay Sharma for his co-ordination for the last few years. The school community would also like to thank Margaret Wigley who has been the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander liaison officer at the College for many years. Margaret’s warm and caring approach so appreciated by our students and families and she has supported many of our students over the years to find mentors, pathways, career and study options into the future. Thank you Margaret and we welcome Jane Rotgans to that role in 2019. Wellbeing Staff Meet at Yarramundi Reach Staff were up bright and early for a Wellbeing Staff Meet (staff meeting with a difference) at Yarramundi Reach Lady Denman Drive at the end of October including a brisk walk among the cyclists and magpies! The College welcomes in 2019 the following new faces: Adrian Poole (Philosophy/English), Ben Godwin (Commerce, Global Studies, Legal Studies), Stephen Edmond (English/History/Business) and Yaoxiang Wang (Chinese/EALD). Next year 2019 Staff walking at staff meet New students arrive in 2019 with orientation days to assist them with their transition to college. Please see further details in the newsletter. Year 11 commence 8:45 am Monday 4 February 2019 Year 12 commence 8:45 am Tuesday 5 February 2019 I would like to thank the College community for their support whilst I have been Acting Principal and thank all students, staff and the school community for their support and commitment to learning and teaching this year. We wish all a safe and enjoyable festive season and the College looks forward to the new school year in 2019. Melissa Planten Acting Principal Welcome to our new students in 2019 DAY 1 – Monday 4 February Year 11 students and new Year 12 students start back on Monday 5 February at 8:45 am. Please collect your student information pack from the Gym. You will participate in an Orientation Day, meet your iGroup teachers and run through some short workshops to help you during your time at Canberra College. Please Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to take notes and to get ‘connected’ to the college IT and Google Apps for Education systems. Don’t forget to bring morning tea and lunch. The canteen will also be open. DAY 2 – Tuesday 5 February Year 12 students arrive at 8:45 am and collect their student information pack from the Gym. Year 11 students arrive at 9:45am and go to their iGroup room. A mini-timetable commences at 10:00am for all. DAY 3 – Wednesday 6 February Normal classes resume starting with Line 2. Please see schedule below. Year 11 Orientation Day – Monday 4 February 2019 8:45 – 9:15 am All students collect timetable and orientation day schedule in the gym 9:15 – 9:45 am Welcome to Canberra College Address Asgard Theatre (in the main building of the college). 9:45 – 10:45 am iGroup introduction session and tour of the school 11:45 – 1:15 pm Orientation Workshops (for new Year 11 students) Health and Wellbeing, College Life, Study Skills 1:15 – 2:00 pm iGroup check in and farewell (for new Year 11 students) 2:00 - 3:30 pm Students can visit Student Services to discuss timetable issues. Note: no classes will be changed until after the mini timetable on Tuesday 5 February. Arty Bits We have just about wrapped things up in the Arts for 2018. We have seen some truly fantastic student work showcased for the community and we look forward to working again with our dedicated and hardworking Arts students in 2019. CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to the students who had success in a variety of awesome Arts events during the past few weeks: The Importance of Being Ernest The final recognition for our Arts students this year will take the form of very special awards at the BSSS Recognition of Excellence Ceremony – Mackenzie Gniel will be acknowledged at this special event in December for the excellence that she has demonstrated in Photography and Drama. Photography Accolades abound Many of our students were featured as major prize winners in Botanic Gardens Photo competition. Three ACT students (all from Canberra College) had their work selected for exhibition at The High Court of Australia as part of the CIT ‘Positive Futures Photogram exhibition”. Oliver White, Tegan Hanrahan and Catriona Emanuel all have their work featured in the foyer of this grand building. The Bald Prima Donna Aidan Giddings, Year 11, was awarded a prestigious Ilford Schools Photography Prize for a silver halide image. Successful Student directed Drama Productions of The Bald prima Donna and The Importance of being Ernest were held in the CCPAC Theatre. The Semester 2 Dance Showcase was a great night in the CCPAC Theatre and many special ticket holders enjoyed a delicious pre-show hors d’oeuvres ahead of the fantastic array of dance styles and performances.
