Medieval 10,1-3_f12_279-308 11/4/04 2:47 PM Page 279 EURASIAN TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE TENTH TO THIRTEENTH CENTURIES: THE VIEW FROM SONG CHINA, 960-1279 PAUL JAKOV SMITH ABSTRACT This essay addresses the nature of the medieval transformation of Eurasia from the perspective of China during the Song dynasty (960-1279). Out of the many facets of the wholesale metamorphosis of Chinese society that characterized this era, I focus on the development of an increasingly bureaucratic and autocratic state, the emergence of a semi-autonomous local elite, and the impact on both trends of the rise of the great steppe empires that encircled and, under the Mongols ultimately extinguished the Song. The rapid evolution of Inner Asian state formation in the tenth through the thirteenth centuries not only swayed the development of the Chinese state, by putting questions of war and peace at the forefront of the court’s attention; it also influenced the evolution of China’s socio-political elite, by shap- ing the context within which elite families forged their sense of coorporate identity and calibrated their commitment to the court. -

Xin Jing (The Heart Scripture) collected and edited by Zhen Dexiu translated by Ryan Chiang McCarthy Introduction This is a translation of the Xinjing or Heart Scripture compiled by the Southern Song Dynasty politician and scholar Zhen Dexiu (1178-1235, art name Xishan). The Xinjing is an anthology of selected texts, from ancient classics such as the Yijing, the Liji, and the Mengzi, accompanied by comments by the Cheng brothers, Zhu Xi, and other eminent scholars, mostly of the Song period. Its theme, as the title suggests, is the matter of cultivating the heart, or mind. This cultivation of the heart was a vital concern for Confucians, or Ruists, in general and particularly to the school to which Zhen Dexiu belonged. This school, called variously lixue (study of pattern/principle), daoxue (study of the way), or the Cheng-Zhu school (after its leading figures), produced wide-ranging and voluminous writings, tackling many subjects including metaphysics, natural philosophy, statecraft, and aesthetics. Self-cultivation and introspection were foundational, though, for social harmony and the stability of the empire. In compiling this book, Zhen Dexiu sought to provide a brief primer- for himself as well as for students- of this foundational subject of self-cultivation. As Zhen Dexiu was instrumental in cementing the dominance of the Cheng-Zhu school, so his Xinjing became an influential text, not only in China, but later in Korea and Japan. To distinguish it from the Buddhist Heart Sutra, also called Xinjing, it has also been known as the Xishan Xinjing. Note on the Translation I am not a trained scholar and this translation is a labor of love by an amateur. -

By the time of the Southern Song (1127–1279) dynasty, the national economic weight of the country moved to South China; at the same time, the Abbasid Caliphate in the Mideast had grown into a great power, too, whose eastern frontier reached the western regions of China, that is, today’s Xinjiang and its adjacent areas in Central Asia. -

In The Eye Of The Selector: Ancient-Style Prose Anthologies In Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) China Abstract The rapid growth of woodblock printing in sixteenth-century China not only transformed wenzhang (“literature”) as a category of knowledge, it also transformed the communities in which knowledge of wenzhang circulated. Twentieth-century scholarship described this event as an expansion of the non-elite reading public coinciding with the ascent of vernacular fiction and performance literature over stagnant classical forms. Because this narrative was designed to serve as a native genealogy for the New Literature Movement, it overlooked the crucial role of guwen (“ancient-style prose,” a term which denoted the everyday style of classical prose used in both preparing for the civil service examinations as well as the social exchange of letters, gravestone inscriptions, and other occasional prose forms among the literati) in early modern literary culture. This dissertation revises that narrative by showing how a diverse range of social actors used anthologies of ancient-style prose to build new forms of literary knowledge and shape new literary publics. -

Book Review The Past, Present and Future of Confucian Political Philosophy —Evaluation of Professor Ouyang Zhenren's From Nature of Mind to Politics Yang Yongtao1 Professor Ouyang Zhenren's new book From Nature of Mind to Politics was published by China Social Sciences Press (Beijing) in 2017, which is a major breakthrough in the academic research on Confucian mind philosophy. At the same time, the publication of this monograph represents the latest trend and frontier achievements in the study of Confucian political philosophy. What does Confucian political philosophy say? What should be its core concern? How can people promote the future development of Confucian political philosophy? These three questions run through Professor Ouyang's From Nature of Mind to Politics. In recent years, there have been a lot of discussions on "Mind Confucianism" and "Political Confucianism" in academic circles, but the differences between them have been emphasized, which actually separates the inherent state of Confucianism. Only by grasping the internal connection from "nature of mind" to "politics" and observing the connection and prominence of "Xiu Shen( 修身)", can we better understand the essence of Confucian political philosophy, which is also Professor Ouyang's concern in writing. The book is divided into six parts: "From Nature of Mind to Politics", "Insight into Confucian political philosophy", "Nature and Evolution of The Book of Filial Piety", "Confucianism advanced in comparison", "From Confucius and Mencius to Lu Jiuyuan" and "From Confucius and Mencius to Wang Yangming". This work combines historical data with theory very well and finds ideas that many people did't see, so it can be said to be a rare and excellent study of Confucian political philosophy. -

The specific time this dissertation delves into is the period of the Chosǒn dynasty (1392-1910), especially the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries which are believed to be the most important period of Korea’s institutional and philosophical systemization. Examining the reciprocal interactions among Chosǒn people and their accompanying political and intellectual debates, this dissertation explores how the government’s state-building project, generally understood as Korea’s Confucianization in existing studies, contributed to the construction of a shared collective identity among the constituent social groups of Chosǒn. This dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapter One delves into ritual debates such as the debates on the sacrifice to Heaven during the early Chosǒn period in which the Chosǒn elite should refer to their state’s history and tradition to support their arguments. Chapter Two ii deals with the tension between Korea’s socio-cultural heritage and the new cultural and institutional tendencies accompanied by the influx of Neo-Confucianism in the late fifteenth century. -

Abe discusses Yamaga Soko's (1622-85) emphasis on practical learning in historiography. Abe states that Soko esteemed Sima Qian's 6] .tI ~ (ca. 145-ca. 90 B.C.E.) remark, in his "Pre face" to the Shij i e. te.. (Records of the Grand Historian), assigning greater value to accounts of reality and practical matters than to those filled with empty words. In histori ography, Soko too preferred practicality rather than vacuous theorizing. Abe thus sees Soko as an "epoch-making figure" and "a pioneer" of realistic historical literature in Japan. Most of Soko's ideas on history are found in ch, 35, "Extending Learning" (J., chichi ljL~u.; Ch., zhizhi), of the · Yamaga gorui ~Jl !t~ (Classified Conversations of Yamaga Soko). The pivotal figure in this rich argument was Gu Yanwu (1613-1682), who proposed a “mixed model” approach that would combine the strengths and counteract the weaknesses in the two rival systems for constituting political authority—the decentralized fengjian system versus the centralized, bureaucratic junxian system. This article reconstructs the main arguments in that debate, looking at how mixed model advocates differed from fengjian revivalists, focusing on the role and ideas of Gu Yanwu, but also drawing attention to their shared goal of using reform to strengthen the imperial state and the authority of the emperor. The concluding section shows how the consolidation of Qing ideological authority by 1680 brought a close to this constitutional debate, leaving it to be rediscovered during the crisis of the 19th century.
