Not to oppose error is to approve it; and not to defend truth is to suppress it; and indeed to neglect to confound evil men, when we can do it, is no less a sin than to encourage them. St Felix I I I Page 2

The Holy were ordinary peasant housewives. With the exception of St. Joanna, who was the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, none of them were wealthy. Yet the Evangelists tell us they purchased large amounts of costly myrrh, ointments and perfumes with which to anoint the body of . They sacrificed the little they had saved up for their own families for ‘a rainy day’ because they realized they could not put a value on God’s love. They were not worried about the expense. They were going to do something dangerous, something maybe even foolish in the eyes of others. The Holy Myrrhbearers literally put their lives at risk to accomplish their goal. Cities in the ancient world were walled for good reason. The territory outside the walls was a noman’s land, domain of wild animals and brigands, especially after dark. Since our Saviour's tomb was in the garden near Golgotha, it was beyond the safety of the city walls. The women deliberately and knowingly stepped out into this vulnerability in order to express their love. Even more, assuming they made it safely to the tomb, the Roman guards would certainly have used any force necessary to prevent them from accessing the tomb. So what happened? This small band of dedicated and faithful women, were the first to hear the words that will resound throughout the universe as long as it exists: CHRIST IS RISEN! Not Andrew, who was the first called to discipleship; not Peter, who swore he would never deny the Lord; not James and John who vowed willingness to drink of the same cup Jesus would. They had locked themselves away, paralyzed by fear into inactivity. Because the Holy Myrrhbearers, in faith, blinded themselves to everything except their desire to show their love for Christ, they were not afraid to preform this blessed act. There is a powerful lesson here for all of us. All of us profess our faith in Christ, yet is it the fearless, trusting, unhesitating faith of the Holy Myrrhbearers? Too often, despite our initial good intentions, we allow ourselves to be dissuaded from expressing or acting out our faith. We fear the COST of living as Christians, whether in actual financial terms, or in terms of the time and energy or emotion it takes to offer ourselves to others out of love for Christ. We fear the DANGER of living as Christians. It always seems so much easier to maintain the status quo; so much safer to keep doing the same old things the same old ways, even if it means passing up the opportunities to make Christ manifest in our little corner of the world. We fear looking FOOLISH by living as Christians, in a world that holds values and priorities that too often are very different from the Gospel. The Holy Myrrhbearers did not compile any , they left us no ; as far a we know, none of them died as martyrs. It would seem, in some cases, they faded back into history after that first Pascha morning. Yet they remain unforgettable heroes of the Faith because of the powerful witness of their actions. Through their prayers, may we too have the courage to actively love Christ first, and then worry about the details later. Soure: https://uocofusa.org/sermon_eng_may_8 by Fr. Kochis

Page 5 To Move intoYour Future, Look at Your Past “Let each person examine his own work, and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else.” Galatians 6:4 For the last couple of days, we’ve looked together at the unique ways God made you—how he planned every day of your life before you were born and how he gave you your own unique SHAPE—Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. But sometimes, even knowing God formed you intentionally and uniquely, you may find yourself not knowing how to move forward in ministry or life in general. Maybe, when you think about the future, you feel more confusion and less joy. If this describes you, it might be because you’ve forgotten the advice the gives in Galatians 6:4: “Let each person examine his own work, and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else” The Bible gives two-part guidance here. First, you should “examine [your] own work.” In other words, you should look at your past and learn from it. Next, you should “not compare [yourself] with someone else.” As you examine your own life, don’t let your eyes wander to how God is working in people around you. Concentrate on what he’s done in and through you. There are plenty of reasons not to compare yourself to other people. One, you will always be able to find someone who seems to be doing a better job than you and you will become discouraged. Two, you will always be able to find someone who doesn’t seem as effective as you and you will become prideful. Either attitude will rob you of your joy. God has a better way for you to discover the next steps on his path for you. He wants you to take a close look at your past to help you move into your future. That’s right—God doesn’t want you to waste your past. God wants to use it. But sometimes it can be hard to know how to look back effectively over your own life. Here’s one easy exercise to get you started: Take a half-hour this week. Sit down with a piece of paper. Separate it with a line for each period of your life. You could decide to divide your life into five-year periods, or into decades. Now it’s time to “examine [your] own work” by creating a life inventory. Answer these two questions for each time period of your life: What were you good at doing? What did you enjoy doing? Now go back and look for patterns. If you were good at something when you were younger, you probably still are. Maybe there’s something you enjoyed a few years ago that you have forgotten about..After you’ve identified patterns in your life, ask God what he wants you to do with this information. ~Rick Warren Page 6

As today’s passage in Galatians says, God might show you things in your past that you can celebrate and be proud of. And seeing patterns of what you’ve been good at and enjoyed throughout your life can help you know how God might want to work through you in the future. Don’t let yourself get caught in a trap of comparison. Instead, take an honest look at your own past. And then step forward with confidence into your future.
