  • Year of Saint Joseph
DIOCESE OF SACRAMENTO Office of Worship 2110 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818 - 916-733-0211 - [email protected] Year of Saint Joseph On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in 2020, Pope Francis has released an apostolic letter about Saint Joseph and declared a “Year of St. Joseph” from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. The letter, Patris Corde (“a Father’s heart”) was released on the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as patron of the Universal Church. It can be found here: http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_letters/documents/papa-francesco-lettera- ap_20201208_patris-corde.html The Diocese of Sacramento is observing this Year in many ways. Journey with Joseph Pilgrimage We will soon be announcing Saint Joseph pilgrimage sites across the Diocese. Indulgence The Apostolic Penitentiary issued a decree on December 8, 2020, formally announcing the decision of Pope Francis to celebrate the Year of Saint Joseph through December 8, 2021. Special opportunities to receive a plenary indulgence were also included, subject to the usual conditions: sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and total detachment to all sin, including venial sin. Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Holy See made provision in its decree that persons who are currently unable to go to Mass or confession because of public health restrictions may defer reception of those two sacraments until they are able to do so. Those who are sick, suffering, or homebound may also receive the plenary indulgence by fulfilling as much as they are able and by offering their sorrows and sufferings to God through Saint Joseph, consoler of the sick and patron saint for receiving a good death.

  • The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary
Faith Fact Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Feast of the Holy Family celebrates the family unit and the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The feast usually falls on the Sunday after Christmas. If Christmas is a Sunday, then the feast is celebrated on December 30. The Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother Mary, and his foster-father Joseph. Devotion to the Holy Family is a recent development, but one that naturally grows out of a love for Jesus and his family. The cult of the Holy Family grew in popularity in the 17th Century, and several religious congregations have been founded under this title. The Holy Family also became portrayed in popular art of the period. On October 26, 1921 the Congregation of Rites (under Pope Benedict XV) inserted the Feast of the Holy Family into the Latin Rite general calendar. Until then, it had been celebrated regionally. Popes before and including Benedict XV (especially Leo XIII) promoted the feast as a way to counter the breakdown of the family unit. Today, the Church celebrates the Feast on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s Day (known as the Feast of Mary, Mother of God in the Catholic Church). If both Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays, no Sunday exists between the two dates, so the Church celebrates the Holy Family Feast on December 30. If the feast falls on the 30th, attendance is not obligatory.

  • The Feast of the Holy Family in the Readings for the Sunday After Christmas, the Church Celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family and Family Life
Commentary on the Readings for December 27, 2020 The Feast of the Holy Family In the Readings for the Sunday after Christmas, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family and family life. This is timely and appropriate because Christmas is, or should be, a family celebration. It began with the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph becoming parents, rounding out their household into a family. This is the perfect model for our family culture. In the First Reading, from the Book of Sirach (3:2- 14), Sirach, the sage, gives us his concept of the ideal fam- ily with all the responsibilities, as well as, the honors and benefits that are bestowed on each member. In mod- ern society, we have a tendency to overlook the responsibility that each member of a family has to all the other members regardless of age. That is why we have so many families falling apart. They are not pulling together because parents are not teaching the importance of "family life" and children, as soon as they are able, break away to follow their own interests instead of the interests of the family. Parents should read and teach this passage of scripture to the chil- dren for the betterment of the entire family. In the Responsorial Psalm (128:1- 5), the psalmist picks up the same theme of family life and blesses those who "walk in the way of the Lord." This subject is so important to the Lord and to the people of the Old Testament that it is re- peated in Proverbs (31:10- 31).

  • Did You Know . . . the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Judy Pearson
Did you know . The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Today is the Feast of the Holy Family, which occurs the first Sunday after Christ- mas (or on Dec. 30 if Christmas is on a Sunday). The feast is meant to recognize the union of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as a family unit. “Scripture tells us practically nothing about the first years and the boyhood of the Child Jesus. All we know are the facts of the sojourn in Egypt, the return to Nazareth, and the incidents that occurred when the twelve-year-old boy accom- panied his parents to Jerusalem. In her liturgy the Church hurries over this period of Christ's life with equal brevity. The general breakdown of the family, however, at the end of the past century and at the beginning of our own, prompted the popes, especially the far-sighted Leo XIII, to promote the observance of this feast with the hope that it might instill into Christian families something of the faithful love and the devoted attachment that characterize the family of Nazareth. The primary purpose of the Church in instituting and promoting this feast is to present the Holy Family as the model and exemplar of all Christian families.” (Excerpted from With Christ Through the Year, Rev Bernard Strasser, O.S.B.). The Holy Family, just as every family, had problems that they had to face and overcome. Like us, the Holy Family had to “carry crosses,” such as the anxiety of having a “lost” child (Luke 2:41-52). Love for each other and God kept this family together.

  • Archdiocese of Santa Fe; I Have Been Assigned As Administrator of the San Felipe Neri Parish
Rev. Luis Gabriel Gomez Lopez Holy Family Parish PO Box 235 Chimayo, NM 87522 May 17, 2020 Dear Parishioners of San Felipe de Neri, My name is Luis Gabriel Gómez López, I belong to the Religious Congregation, Sons of the Holy Family, I received the sacrament of priestly ordination on January 27, 2007, I was currently developing my pastoral and priestly ministry as vicar at Holy Parish Family in the Chimayo sanctuary. It has been a time of grace and blessing where the merciful Presence of God has been guiding and teaching me, through prayer, community life and the challenge of a new language, a new culture and a valuable opportunity for my growth as a person, as a believer and as a priest. I have lived special moments here in the Chimayo community, your greetings, your prayer, and support have helped me grow as Jesus of Nazareth, in Grace and wisdom (Luke 2,52) I am totally grateful for this blessed community, which has made me feel one more of them. Now, in the infinite mercy of God, the trust and support of my Religious Community, and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe; I have been assigned as administrator of the San Felipe Neri parish. This is another chapter in the book of our lives, where we will have a great opportunity to share our faith and our consecration, we will continue writing the history of our parish community, guided and enlightened by the presence of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This new beginning fills us with hope and faith, with total gratitude for the spiritual inheritance and valuable witness of faith and dedication that our predecessors have left us, who were tirelessly light and salt (Mathew 5, 13-16) who guided by the presence of the Spirit of God has led this parish community to further growth of service and holiness.
