Year of Saint Joseph
DIOCESE OF SACRAMENTO Office of Worship 2110 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818 - 916-733-0211 - [email protected] Year of Saint Joseph On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in 2020, Pope Francis has released an apostolic letter about Saint Joseph and declared a “Year of St. Joseph” from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. The letter, Patris Corde (“a Father’s heart”) was released on the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as patron of the Universal Church. It can be found here: http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_letters/documents/papa-francesco-lettera- ap_20201208_patris-corde.html The Diocese of Sacramento is observing this Year in many ways. Journey with Joseph Pilgrimage We will soon be announcing Saint Joseph pilgrimage sites across the Diocese. Indulgence The Apostolic Penitentiary issued a decree on December 8, 2020, formally announcing the decision of Pope Francis to celebrate the Year of Saint Joseph through December 8, 2021. Special opportunities to receive a plenary indulgence were also included, subject to the usual conditions: sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and total detachment to all sin, including venial sin. Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Holy See made provision in its decree that persons who are currently unable to go to Mass or confession because of public health restrictions may defer reception of those two sacraments until they are able to do so. Those who are sick, suffering, or homebound may also receive the plenary indulgence by fulfilling as much as they are able and by offering their sorrows and sufferings to God through Saint Joseph, consoler of the sick and patron saint for receiving a good death. -
Egyptian Interest in the Oases in the New Kingdom and a New Stela for Seth from Mut El-Kharab
Egyptian Interest in the Oases in the New Kingdom and a New Stela for Seth from Mut el-Kharab Colin Hope and Olaf Kaper The study of ancient interaction between Egypt and the occupants of regions to the west has focused, quite understandably, upon the major confrontations with the groups now regularly referred to as Liby- ans from the time of Seti I to Ramesses III, and the impact these had upon Egyptian society.1 The situ- ation in the oases of the Western Desert and the role they might have played during these conflicts has not received, until recently, much attention, largely because of the paucity of information either from the Nile Valley or the oases themselves. Yet, given their strategic location, it is not unrealistic to imagine that their control would have been of importance to Egypt both during the confrontations and in the period thereafter. In this short study we present a summary of recently discovered material that contributes sig- nificantly to this question, with a focus upon discoveries made at Mut el-Kharab since excavations com- menced there in 001,3 and a more detailed discussion of one object, a new stela with a hymn dedicated to Seth, which is the earliest attestation of his veneration at the site. We hope that the comments will be of interest to the scholar to whom this volume is dedicated; they are offered with respect, in light of the major contribution he has made to Ramesside studies, and with thanks for his dedication as a teacher and generosity as a colleague. -

The Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary
Faith Fact Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Feast of the Holy Family celebrates the family unit and the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The feast usually falls on the Sunday after Christmas. If Christmas is a Sunday, then the feast is celebrated on December 30. The Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother Mary, and his foster-father Joseph. Devotion to the Holy Family is a recent development, but one that naturally grows out of a love for Jesus and his family. The cult of the Holy Family grew in popularity in the 17th Century, and several religious congregations have been founded under this title. The Holy Family also became portrayed in popular art of the period. On October 26, 1921 the Congregation of Rites (under Pope Benedict XV) inserted the Feast of the Holy Family into the Latin Rite general calendar. Until then, it had been celebrated regionally. Popes before and including Benedict XV (especially Leo XIII) promoted the feast as a way to counter the breakdown of the family unit. Today, the Church celebrates the Feast on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s Day (known as the Feast of Mary, Mother of God in the Catholic Church). If both Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays, no Sunday exists between the two dates, so the Church celebrates the Holy Family Feast on December 30. If the feast falls on the 30th, attendance is not obligatory. -

Overview Sources indicate that Coptic Christians make up approximately 10 percent of the population of Egypt (Freedom House 2017; Human Rights Watch 12 Apr. 2017). An article published in Foreign Policy states that Coptic Christians "saw General Abdel Fatah El-Sisi, who initiated Morsi's removal and later became Egypt's new president, as a savior" (Foreign Policy 9 Dec. 2016). According to Freedom House, "[t]he Coptic Church leadership has allied itself with [President] Sisi since the coup [of 2013], apparently to ensure the security of its constituents" (Freedom House 2017). 2. Situation and Treatment of Coptic Christians Amnesty International reports that religious minorities, "including Coptic Christians…, continued to face discriminatory restrictions in law and practice and inadequate protection from violence" (Amnesty International 22 Feb. -
