Birth-Family Mithridates I Ktistes was born around 350 B.C., probably in Cius (Gemlik).1 His father's identity is a controversial point. A manuscript variant in Diodorus Siculus says that he was Mithridates (II of Cios), but Diodorus and other authors say that he was Ariobarzanes, brother of the former; the second possibility seems more plausible.2 The ancient sources consider that the Pontic dynasty was descendent either from Cyrus the Great, or from Darius I, or from one of the "Seven Persians" which murdered Gaumata.3 Those three options are compatible, for Darius himself was one of the Seven and tried to appear as belonging to the same lineage with Cyrus. This genealogy was an aspect of the Pontic Kings' propaganda, although it may have had a real ground: Darius would have given to his son, Gobrias, the government of the region of Mariandinya, in Bithynia. The daughter of Gobrias would have married with Artabazus, son of Pharnaces, another of the Seven.

For centuries, inhabitants of coastal areas have suffered from the effects of tsunamis. Turkey, with a coastline of 8333 km, has experienced many tsunamis. Historical records reveal that, during the observation period over 3000 years, the coastal and surrounding areas of Turkey have been affected by more than ninety tsunamis. These tended to cluster around the Marmara Sea, the city of Istanbul and the gulfs of Izmit, Izmir, Fethiye and Iskenderun. Each of the tsunami occurrences surveyed in this paper deserves further individual study. The most extensive available information concerns the tsunamis associated with the Istanbul Earthquakes of 1509 and 1894, the Eastern Mar- mara Earthquake in 1963 and that of Izmit in 1999, which disturbed the Marmara Sea; the Earthquake of 1939 in Erzincan in eastern Anatolia; and the 1968 Bartın Earthquake, which affected Fatsa and Amasra on the Black Sea.

ETHNIC SURVIVAL, NATIONALISM AND FORCED MIGRATION The historical demography of the Greek community of Asia Minor at the close of the Ottoman era Introductory An important new trend in Ottoman studies focuses on the historical demography of the Ottoman Empire. A number of scholars have attempt ed in recent years to reconstruct the evolution of the population in various parts and provinces of the Empire. The great interest of these studies consists in the new documentation they bring to light from the non-generally accessible Ottoman archives'. The historical demography of more recent times, especially of the nineteenth century, can be doc umented on the basis of official censuses and other population regis ters2 . Both the interests of the researchers and the character of the We wish to acknowledge our gratitude to Professor Speros Vryonis, Jr., of the University of California, Los Angeles, for his encouragement and his valuable comments on an earlier draft of this paper. It introduces the legal framework and the stakeholders involved in conducting archaeological excavations and surveys. The current situation in archiving born-digital and digitised documentation produced during archaeological fieldwork is then introduced. Existing repositories serving as hubs for archaeological and heritage archiving are listed and briefly discussed. Analysis of online publishing practices for archaeological digital resources points to an eclectic landscape that only minimally complies with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. We conclude that guidelines for best practice in metadata and semantic technologies, locally applicable standards (especially controlled vocabularies), technical know-how, and a larger acceptance of open data and scholarship remain much-needed assets for archaeological digital archiving in Turkey. We also conclude that the future promises progress towards more interoperable archaeological digital archives thanks to international training, network and knowledge transfer opportunities (e.g. SEADDA Project). 1. Archaeology in Turkey All immovable and movable cultural assets in the Republic of Turkey are state property whose protection is ensured by the Turkish State under the Constitution (Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, 1982, Article 63). Definitions of immovable and movable cultural assets are stipulated in the Law on the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Property (No.

And so went this dissertation project: little by little quotidian efforts turned into something larger. But these drops, in fact, were not just my own efforts, nor were they always quotidian. The number of drops contributed by others is incalculable, but the impact is clear. Special thanks go to my advisor Fikret Yegül for his unwavering support and kindness throughout my graduate school experience. I also thank Diane Favro for her continual warmth and helpfulness.
