It’s especially hard in elementary school classrooms, where talking about the worst parts of our history seems at odds with the need to motivate young learners and nurture their self-confidence. Teaching about slavery, especially to children, challenges educators. Those we’ve spoken with—especially white teachers—shrink from telling about oppression, emphasizing tales of escape and resistance instead. They worry about making black students feel ashamed, Latinx and Asian students feel excluded and white students feel guilty. -

LaRoche HATU Essay Essay for Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument Submitted by Cheryl Janifer LaRoche, Ph. D. January 7, 2014 It was an honor to engage with the legacy of Harriet Tubman and to participate in the Scholar’s Roundtable in November of 2013. The discussions stimulated by the questions provided were both illuminating and thought-provoking. I was heartened to learn that more community leaders and interested—and not so interested—parties would be included in future vetting processes. As I indicated during our discussions, inclusion should cover a wide range of voices and opinions, sympathetic as well as challenging. Often, the challenging participants force new ideas and lay paths for new directions. “Ownership” of the legacy of Harriet Tubman is shifting away from the local community as they realize that her story is both a national and global treasure. Within that context, however, Tubman will always remain an important local icon and I believe it would benefit both the National Park Service and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument to be very mindful of Tubman’s local importance. Tubman’s legacy can be used to strengthen and empower the local community, particularly those whose families have been rooted on the Eastern Shore for generations. For this essay, I will elaborate on each of the four questions posed to the scholars or reiterate points I believe are important to the interpretation of Tubman’s significance. Many of the points I raise around literacy or religious freedom, for example, move beyond the literal story but were not part of the original questions 1 LaRoche HATU Essay posed for the Roundtable Scholars. -
Henry Mcneal Turner
Henry McNeal Turner Nationalist, Repatriationist, PanAfricanist, Minister, Author SECTION ONE SOURCE: https://blackpast.org/aah/turner-henry-mcneal-1834-1915 Black Nationalist, repatriationist, and minister, Henry M. Turner was 31 years old at the time of the Emancipation. Turner was born in 1834 in Newberry Courthouse, South Carolina to free black parents Sarah Greer and Hardy Turner. The self-taught Turner by the age of fifteen worked as a janitor at a law firm in Abbeville, South Carolina. The firm’s lawyers noted his abilities and helped with his education. However, Turner was attracted to the church and after being converted during a Methodist religious revival, decided to become a minister. He joined the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and became a licensed minister in 1853 at the age of 19. Turner soon became an itinerant evangelist traveling as far as New Orleans, Louisiana. By 1856 he married Eliza Peacher, the daughter of a wealthy African American house builder in Columbia, South Carolina. The couple had fourteen children but only four of them survived into adulthood. In 1858 Turner entered Trinity College in Baltimore, Maryland where he studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew and theology. Two years later he became the pastor of the Union Bethel Church in Washington, D.C. Turner cultivated friendships with important Republican Congressional figures including Ohio Congressman Benjamin Wade, Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, and Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner. Turner had already become a national figure when in 1863 at the age of 29 he was appointed by President Lincoln to the position of Chaplain in the Union Army. -

Pak Assistant Professor Bekisizwe Ndimande ABSTRACT This dissertation examines African student non-return within the larger historical pursuit of higher education in the United States by African students. Non-return by African students as addressed in this study is a process more than two centuries old extending directly across four defined phases of African student migrations. Key primary documents including the autobiographies of African students, correspondence between African students and other primary agents of African student migrations as well as oral interviews from African students turned permanent settlers from the fourth phase of African student migrations to the United States, are utilized in this dissertation. The perspectives of the non-returning African student in this dissertation address three important areas central to analyzing non-return; first, the factors that shaped the choices of non-returning African students to study in the United States; second, the social and cultural experiences encountered as a part of their educational migrations; and last, the decision to non-return. Non-return as articulated through interviews in this dissertation and supported by other primary and secondary source documentation is identified as a fluid process constantly shifting in response to internal and external pressures as well as historical and contemporary forces. -

I thank my husband, Ronald, for his unwavering support. 2 ABSTRACT The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church connection is a major, historic Black Christian denomination which has long been ignored as a subject of serious academic reflection, especially of an historic nature. This was partly due to the lack of denominational archives, and the sense that historical inventory and archival storage could be a financial drain to the AME Zion Church such it could not maintain its own archives and indeed, retaining official records was kept at a far from super or archival level. -

Materials: A computer with an Internet connection and a large screen or other capability to display the teacher’s actions to the entire class. Lesson Use of imported Africans and African Americans for slave labor began in the Jamestown colony of Virginia in the seventeenth century, and lasted until after the Civil War ended in 1865. The best way to learn about the experience of those who were held as slaves is to study their first-hand accounts. Many slaves who either had escaped or been freed published their stories during the nineteenth century. These stories became a distinct literary genre known as slave narratives. Prominent American colonists published popular autobiographies – or books about themselves – during the eighteenth century. About the same time, Puritans began writing the stories of Native Americans held in captivity. The first slave narratives, published in the late 1700s, had their roots in these two genres, but they had their own unique characteristics as well. The slave narrative developed as a genre during the nineteenth century for two reasons. The first was the support slaves received from the abolitionist – or anti-slavery – movement, which gained momentum beginning in the 1830s. The other is the romantic movement of American literature, which encouraged individualism, stressed emotional subjects, and often featured quests for American ideals, such as freedom.
