Beginnings of a Black Theology and its Social Impact Black Theology was the stream of African Theology that first developed in America as a layman philosophy. For African Americans, the Bible at that time was the main source of information on Africa. The Psalm 68:31 served as the basis for the construction of an entire ideology of “Ethiopia” with which they meant, Africa. Out of it, Absalom Jones and Richard Allen composed: "May he who hath arisen to plead our cause, and engaged you as volunteers in the service, add to your numbers until the princes shall come from Egypt and Ethiopia stretch out her hand unto God.”1 This entire complex of beliefs and attitudes towards Africa, missions and the Back-to Africa impetus was very much incarnated in the person and work of Bishop Henry McNeal Turner (1834- 1915). In 1851, he joined the Methodist Church where he was later assigned deacon and elder and even, bishop. When Turner heard a speech of Crummell, this marked a turning point in his young life. But he first started a military and political career in the States until appointed chaplain by President Abraham Lincoln and later elected twice into the House of Representatives in Georgia. Here, he and other Blacks were prohibited from taking their seats.2 The ideas of African American missionary work in Africa and the return to this continent as the only way for Blacks to find justice; became Turner’s motivating force. He called for reparations for the years of slavery in order to finance the repatriation. -

This study examines the role of free blacks, escaping slaves, and white Protestant evangelicals influenced by tenants of Kentucky’s Second Great Awakening who were inspired, directly or indirectly, to aid in African American community building. -

Dallas Bowser, In 1899, about fifteen years after the Conference of Berlin accelerated Europe's partitioning of Africa, African-American preacher Henry Blanton Parks fervently believed the fate of Africa would be determined during the twentieth century. Parks struggled long and hard as a young man to secure an education in Georgia and rise in the ranks of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church; he earned a reputation for having an expansive outlook in the process. By the time he became Secretary of Home and Foreign Missions, Reverend Parks not only located Christian redemption of Africa within the promise of a new century, he authored a book to convince other African Americans that it was their duty to conquer the continent for God, for Africans, for themselves. Warner, CLO Online Administrator BISHOP EDWARD WATERS By Robert Thomas Matthews, III Director of Public Relations – Sixth Episcopal District Lay Organization, AMEC Historiographer of the West Atlanta District Lay Organization, AMEC Bishop Edward Waters was born, a slave, on March 15, 1780 at West River, MD. At an early age, he came to Baltimore and joined the A. M. E. Church. He was subsequently ordained Deacon and Elder after which he served in the Baltimore area. Waters was elected and consecrated as the Third Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on May 8, 1836 during the Fifth Quadrennial Session of the General Conference--not including the Organizing Convention of 1816, which was also held in Philadelphia, PA. However, among the unusual historical biographic annals and documents, we find a most unusual entry concerning Bishop Edward Waters, the Third, elected and consecrated Bishop of African Methodist Episcopal Church. Although our school of higher education in Florida bears his name, Bishop Water’s legacy and history following his election and consecration to the bishopric, as reported by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne (6th Bishop), bears this note: “The same year of his election, Bishop Brown took him with him, to all the Conferences except the Western Conference, thus giving him some idea of the field of labor. -

Richard Allen and the Prehistory of Engaged Community Learning at HBCUs Elizabeth Kimball, Drew University This essay argues that African American church founder Richard Allen (1760-1831) developed a rhetorical pedagogy that prefigures the community literacy partnerships of later Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). While Allen did not enjoy the material opportunities of institutionalized higher learning, we can interpret passages from his autobiography as a rhetorical pedagogy that affirms the ways of knowing in language of his community, suggests a relationship between language and the truth, and points toward a community pedagogy rooted in language. Allen also figures as •••••••••••••••••••••••••• a rhetor whose own higher literacy is sponsored by his community, and who returns his rhetorical power to the community for its own betterment. These same dimensions can be witnessed in the pedagogies of later nineteenth-century African American educators, particularly that of Fanny Jackson Coppin of the Institute for Colored Youth, and Daniel A. Payne of Wilberforce University. Moreover, Allen’s very lack of formalized schooling affords us a way of reframing contemporary efforts in university and community partnerships, and offers compelling precedent for Linda Flower’s model of inquiry. For African American higher learning, community literacy partnerships are not merely an additive element of a traditional curriculum; instead, •••••••••••••••••••••••••• they are the lifeblood of the school itself. -

South Carolina African American History Calendar Celebrates 25 Years. 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Dear Students, Educators,and Friends, One of the highlights of my year is the unveiling of the new African American History Calendar, for it is always a wonderful time of renewing friendships, connecting with new acquaintances, and honoring a remarkable group of South Carolinians. This year is even more exciting, for the 2014 calendar is our 25th Anniversary Edition! For a quarter of a century, the Calendar project has celebrated the lives, leadership, and experiences of gifted people who have shaped who we are as a State and as South Carolinians. Initially developed as a resource for teachers as they include African American history in their classroom curriculum, the Calendar has become a virtual Hall of Fame, combining recognition with education and drawing online visitors from around the globe. Thus far, 297 African Americans with South Carolina roots have been featured on the Calendar’s pages. They represent a wide array of endeavors, including government and military service, education, performing and fine arts, business, community activism, and athletics. They hail from every corner of the state, from rural communities to our largest cities. And each has made a difference for people and for their communities. The Calendar, with its supporting educational materials, has always been designed to help students understand that history is about people and their actions, not simply dates or places. While previous editions have focused on individuals, the 25th Anniversary Edition spotlights 12 milestone events in South Carolina’s African American History. Driven by men and women of courage and conviction, these events helped lay the foundation for who we are today as a State and who we can become. -

Quinn placed his hands upon the head of Daniel Alexander Paynel on May 13, 1852, ordaining him as a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Through the imposition of hands, Payne traced his ministeriallineage back to John Wesley. 2 He revered his ,\' Wesleyan heritage and sought to use Wesley's teachings to support his ideas , . and programs for the church. From its inception in 1816 the A. M. E. Church boasted ·of having its roots in historic Methodism, and Payne in tended to 'keep the church in that tradition. He articulated Methodist polity .1 and theology among the blacks until his death in 1893. Although Payne extolled the virtues ofWesleyan tradition,3 the rela I 1,. tionship between white and black Methodists was not always cordial.
