  • Treaty of Westphalia
Background Information Treaty of Westphalia The Peace of Westphalia, also known as the Treaty of Münster and the Treaty of Osnabrück, refers to a pair of treaties that ended the Thirty Years' War and officially recognized the Dutch Republic and Swiss Confederation. • The Spanish treaty that ended the Thirty Years' War was signed on January 30, 1648. • A treaty between the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, the other German princes and the representatives from the Dutch Republic, France and Sweden was signed on October 24, 1648. • The Treaty of the Pyrenees, signed in 1659, ending the war between France and Spain, is also often considered part of this treaty. The Peace of Westphalia is the first international agreement to acknowledge a country's sovereignty and is thus thought to mark the beginning of the modern system of nation- states (Westphalian states). The majority of the treaty's terms can be attributed to the work of Cardinal Mazarin, the de facto leader of France at the time (the King, Louis XIV, was still a child). France came out of the war in a far better position than any of the other powers and was able to dictate much of the treaty. The results of the treaty were wide ranging. Among other things, the Netherlands now officially gained independence from Spain, ending the Eighty Years' War, and Sweden gained Pomerania, Wismar, Bremen and Verden. The power of the Holy Roman Emperor was broken and the rulers of the German states were again able to determine the religion of their lands. The treaty also gave Calvinists legal recognition.

  • What Money Can't Buy Project Description
What Money Can’t Buy. The Dynamics between Market Orientation, Individualization, and Social Capital. The Case of the Danish National Church. 1. Summary The Danish society is decisively impacted by market orientation and individualization with the consequent changes in its social capital. This project examines the dynamics between these three tendencies with particular regard to the public cultural institutions, using The Danish National Church as an empirical case. 1 The project will cover three levels: the social structure (including legal, economic, administrative and political factors); the members and users of the church; and the connections between the levels (resource mobilization, links between self-understanding, resource allocation, and participation, and the institutions’ production of public goods). In a country with reliable public statistics and a population ready to respond to questioning the Danish National Church as a major cultural institution is well suited to such a survey. The results will contribute to the international debate on the consequences and limits of market orientation in relation to cultural institutions. 2. Money makes the world go around Since the 1990s states have increasingly given priority to market competition and have embarked on becoming competitive states, which also is reflected in the politics of managing public institutions. For example Ove Kaj Pedersen has demonstrated how Denmark’s development to a competitive state has affected public schooling (Pedersen 2011). A common denominator is the inroad of the market-oriented philosophy of New Public Management (NPM) in public affairs, including public cultural institutions (Hood 1991, see also Klausen and Ståhlberg 1998). Strictly economic analyses of the market conditions for cultural institutions in Denmark can be found in Mller and Nielsen 1999 and Hjorth-Andersen 2013.

  • Adopting a New Religion: the Case of Protestantism in 16Th Century Germany
Adopting a New Religion: The Case of Protestantism in 16th Century Germany Davide Cantoni∗ University of Munich August 2011 Abstract Using a rich dataset of territories and cities of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century, this paper investigates the determinants of adoption and diffusion of Protestantism as a state religion. A territory’s distance to Wittenberg, the city where Martin Luther taught, is a major determinant of adoption. This finding is consistent with a theory of strategic neighbourhood interactions: in an uncertain legal context, introducing the Reformation was a risky enterprise for territorial lords, and had higher prospects of success if powerful neighbouring states committed to the new faith first. The predictions of this theory are then compared to the actual patterns of expansion of Protestantism using a panel dataset featuring the dates of introduction of the Reformation. Version: 1.1 Keywords: Protestantism, State religions, Spatial adoption of policies JEL Classification: N34,Z12,R38 ∗Seminar fur¨ Wirtschaftsgeschichte, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat¨ Munchen,¨ Ludwigstr. 33/IV, 80539 Munich (Germany). Email: [email protected]. I thank Antonio Ciccone, Ruixue Jia, Jared Rubin, Joachim Voth, Ludger Woessmann, and three anonymous referees for helpful comments, and Regina Baar-Cantoni and Eike Wolgast for expert counseling on the history of German Reformation. Katharina Kube provided outstanding research assistance. 1 Introduction Starting with Max Weber’s (1904/05) famous inquiry on the “Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,” religion has widely been seen by social scientists as one of the cul- tural traits most likely to influence economic outcomes. The findings about any direct effects of Protestantism on economic growth are unclear at best (Delacroix and Nielsen, 2001; Cantoni, 2010).
