After the success of last year’s EST FILM FESTIVAL, (over 8000 people attending over one week), with prestigious guests like Nanni Moretti, Pupi Avati, Giuliano Montaldo, Giorgio Diritti, Francesco Patierno and Carmine Amoroso, winner of the 2008 Arco for "Cover Boy", this year’s festival aims to involve the whole of the Tuscia area in a cultural programme packed with cinematographic and other events. A BRIEF PREVIEW OF THE PROGRAMME Carlo Verdone will be the chief guest at the inauguration. He will meet the public and receive a Special lifetime achievement award during the inauguration ceremony at 6 pm on Saturday July 25th at Rocca dei Papi. Syllabus GOALS The goal of this Italian Language and Culture Class for beginners is to provide you with the elementary structure necessary to enable you to understand the culture of the people who speak this language as well as the culture of contemporary Italy. REQUIRED TEXTS & COURSE CONTENT No text book is required. “Lezioni di Italiano” is the reference book given to each student. It is organized in 11 chapters beginning with the chapter that introduces the fundaments of Italian pronunciation and expressions for getting acquainted. Basic elements are the same from chapter to chapter without imposing, however, a rigorous organization of the chapter. As a matter of fact, each chapter takes its natural course according to the topics and structures presented. It is however strongly recommended to purchase a pocket dictionary Italiano-Inglese / English-Italian. The basic chapter elements are the following: - Rapidi scambi: short conversational exchanges to focus on the topic and situation related to the chapter. The “Rapidi scambi” are for the students to be memorized and then encouraged to repeat them and act them in class. -

The diva derives from Italy’s nineteenth-century opera, silent film, and Catholic culture. Today, she has evolved into a secular alternative to traditional female religious icons such as the Madonna and the Magdalene. Alongside the figure of the diva is that of her historical male counterpart, the divo, initially a sort of demigod in early Italian cinema who has now come to reflect contemporary Italy’s crisis of masculinity. Beyond their origins and evolution, the diva, divo, and modern star can ultimately be defined as performers who know how to play any role while superimposing their own image onto a character. “Divas, Stardom, and Celebrity in Modern Italy” examines in detail the question of how those images have been constructed, transmitted, and received from the late nineteenth century to the present day. A number of related questions will inform the course: How do different genres and modes of Italian film, from silent film, talkies, fascist propaganda films, and neorealism to comedy Italian style, the spaghetti western, and the horror film construct stars differently? In 2003, Miliicent Marcus became Visiting Goggio Professor at the University of Toronto, where she gave the public lectures that form the nucleus of Italian Film in the Shadow ofAuschwitz. While the word "Auschwitz" has become emblematic of Nazi persecution of Jews and other groups (as indicated by Roberto Salvadori), Marcus stresses that, for Italians, its symbolic significance does not supersede its literal meaning: "Auschwitz was the material destination of eleven of the fifteen transports that led 6806 victims to their death between October 1943 and December 1944". Therefore, the author powerfully concludes, "Auschwitz was not the synecdoche, but the synonym, for annihilation" (3). Italians have been painful- ly slow to reckon with the aftermath of this tragedy. In spite of its tradition of political commitment, Italian cinema bears its share of responsibility for this his- torical neglect, which makes the appearance of several films devoted to the Holocaust in the 1990s all the more surprising and noteworthy. Marcus employs a psychoanalytical approach in her discussion of these repre- sentations, while also analyzing historical and political factors to explain their belated emergence on the Italian cinematic scene. -
