Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XV 275 LEARNING FROM THE PAST: THE LESSON OF THE JAPANESE HOUSE EMILIA GARDA, MARIKA MANGOSIO & LUIGI PASTORE Politecnico di Torino, Italy ABSTRACT Thanks to the great spiritual value linked to it, the Japanese house is one of the oldest and most fascinating architectural constructs of the eastern world. The religion and the environment of this region have had a central role in the evolution of the domestic spaces and in the choice of materials used. The eastern architects have kept some canons of construction that modern designers still use. These models have been source of inspiration of the greatest minds of the architectural landscape of the 20th century. The following analysis tries to understand how such cultural bases have defined construction choices, carefully describing all the spaces that characterize the domestic environment. The Japanese culture concerning daily life at home is very different from ours in the west; there is a different collocation of the spiritual value assigned to some rooms in the hierarchy of project prioritization: within the eastern mindset one should guarantee the harmony of spaces that are able to satisfy the spiritual needs of everyone that lives in that house. The Japanese house is a new world: every space is evolving thanks to its versatility. Lights and shadows coexist as they mingle with nature, another factor in understanding the ideology of Japanese architects. In the following research, besides a detailed description of the central elements, incorporates where necessary a comparison with the western world of thought. All the influences will be analysed, with a particular view to the architectural features that have influenced the Modern Movement. -

Shigisan engi Shigisan engi Overview I. The Shigisan engi or Legends of the Temple on Mount Shigi consists of three handscrolls. Scroll 1 is commonly called “The Flying Granary,” Scroll 2 “The Exorcism of the Engi Emperor,” and Scroll 3 “The Story of the Nun.” These scrolls are a pictorial presentation of three legends handed down among the common people. These legends appear under the title “Shinano no kuni no hijiri no koto” (The Sage of Shinano Province) in both the Uji sh¯ui monogatari (Tales from Uji) and the Umezawa version of the Kohon setsuwash¯u (Collection of Ancient Legends). Since these two versions of the legends are quite similar, one is assumed to be based on the other. The Kohon setsuwash¯u ver- sion is written largely in kana, the phonetic script, with few Chinese characters and is very close to the text of the Shigisan engi handscrolls. Thus, it seems likely that there is a deep connection between the Shigisan engi and the Kohon setsuwash¯u; one was probably the basis for the other. “The Flying Granary,” Scroll 1 of the Shigisan engi, lacks the textual portion, which has probably been lost. As that suggests, the Shigisan engi have not come down to us in their original form. The Shigisan Ch¯ogosonshiji Temple owns the Shigisan engi, and the lid of the box in which the scrolls were stored lists two other documents, the Taishigun no maki (Army of Prince Sh¯otoku-taishi) and notes to that scroll, in addition to the titles of the three scrolls. -

This theory is a relatively new and vaguely defined approach to a combined method of conservation and progressive growth; balanced elements of a “smart growth” strategy. Therefore, a clarification of the term, along with an initial analysis of the definitions and values of vernacular architectures, is needed. Secondly, The Japanese machiya type will be explored as a unique vernacular form, indicating its diversity over time and similarity over distance. The essential controls and stimulus of its formal evolution and common characteristics will be examined. Machiya, a Japanese term, translates roughly to townhouse, in English. It is typically a city dwelling which also includes a small shop or metting space that fronts the street. This is the typical dwelling of the urban merchant class. The long of history of its development and its many transformations will be discussed. These analyses ultimately lead to the design exercise which investigates the machiya type as an intelligent base for a developmental vernacular process within the context of the Japanese urban environment. -

B), No. 1, 1•`21, 1984 The Codes of Japanese Landscapes -An Attempt to Topological Geography -Ichiro SUIZU* In the articulations forming a landscape on various levels, we can recognize the relation ships of "material E morpheme c constituent," and "constituent •¼ part of a landscape." A "region" can be regarded as a unity of places where the articulations of landscapes serve as a ground and figure for actions to be physically performed, and where the loci of these performances are stratified to reform and reorganize the given articulations. Thus, we first notice that the existence of relations which are latent in a "region" corresponds to the structure of a language. Since ancient days, the Japanese have had the concept of "ma," a concept related to a space-time continuum. A versatile concept, it further connotes even relative relationships among objects in the space-time realm. In other words, various performances have been considered to manifest themselves in concrete forms in the realm of "ma." Accordingly, it is presumed that among the traditional codes (langue) which have determined performances (parole) based on the background of various articulations of landscapes consisting of morphemes peculiar to Japan, there are some codes which contribute to providing a unique structure for "ma." This paper aims at varifying the existence of these codes on the basis of the results of studies on the historical geography in Japan and at clarifying their characteristics from the viewpoint of comparative geography. Furthermore, this paper aims to elucidate the codes that have some aspects corresponding to the topological space beyond Euclidean space and to give a concrete explanation to the morphogenesis of landscapes in conformity with the theory of bifurcation in topology. -

Architect Birgit Jürgenhake TU Delft, Faculty of Architecture, Julianalaan 134, 2628 BL Delft, The Netherlands [email protected] The qualities of the Machiya An architectural research of a traditional house in Japan Abstract: The Machiya, a traditional wooden house in the city of Kyoto, were demolished by thousands up to the nineties because of the lack of modern comfort these houses offer. In the last twenty years the consciousness of cultural heritage has grown and the city realizes that these old houses must have had qualities new stacked dwellings never can offer. Research programs have been started up to understand these special qualities, to learn from them, to help the existing Machiya to survive and to use the tradition for the design of new residential buildings types as well. In 2011 I was offered the opportunity to live in a Machiya and to participate in a Machiya research program. In the article I summarize the origin of the Machiya, the decline and the revival. I explain my research method and focus on the qualities of these houses. To live in a Machiya means to undergo life in a dwelling condition of ambiguity. You are inside and outside at the same moment. I will discuss some profound conclusions and transformations to new architecture which are interesting for other cultures as well. Once understood – there a several possibilities to give these houses new life. Keywords: cultural heritage – traditions - concept of OKU - transitions - transformations 1.
