BISCACCIANTI (*) and DANIELE SECHI (**) Trichoferus arenbergeri Holzschuh, 1995 was described from Sar- dinia based upon three females collected in the following localities: “2 km westl, Siniscola [NU], Monte Albo” (locus typicus), “Siniscola (Nuoro)” and “Ozieri” [SS] (Holzschuh 1995: 15). The male of this taxon is still unknown, as well as its biology, ecology and preimaginal stages. During several surveys carried out from 2002 to 2007 at differ- ent sites in southern Sardinia, several specimens (larvae, pupae and adults of both sexes) of this poorly known longhorn beetle were col- lected and observed. The aim of this paper is to describe the male morphology, the biology and the habitat of the species, with a discus- sion about its relationship to other congeneric species. Larval and pu- pal morphology will be treated in a further contribution (Biscaccianti & Di Giulio unpublished data). Specimens examined are listed from North to South and from East to West; they are preserved in the collections listed below. Measures of specimens are taken in the following way. Total length: from the forehead to the apex of elytra; elytral length: from humerus to elytral apex; elytral width: maximum width at humeri; tarsal joint length: from the base of joint (excluding articulation) to the apical margin, or to the midpoint of a line tangential to the apex of the lobes (for bilobed joints); tarsal joint width: maximum width. Nomenclature of associated beetle-fauna follows Liberti (2007), plant nomenclature follows Conti et al. -

This year a late frost had turned great swathes of the fresh green Beech foliage to an autumnal brown, so the landscape had an unusual colour palette; it had also impacted on some of the other plants, and possibly other species. Trees higher up in the Val di Rose were unaffected, where we had great views of Abruzzo Chamois. These are always a pleasure to see, as are the Wild Boar, Red and Roe Deer, and a Beech Marten was a good sighting. We were disappointed not to see the Marsican Brown Bear this week (although they were seen in the second week), but it is a reminder that these are truly wild animals, never fed by humans, and any sighting of these or Wolves is a bonus. We enjoyed a wide selection of birds, butterflies and flowers, especially the orchids in their abundance. Geraldine and Marco, as ever, provided a warm welcome and excellent hospitality, introducing us to several local specialities. -

In ITS and ITS + trnL-F trees, all members of Atractylodes form a monophyletic clade. Atractylodes is a sister group of the Carlina and Atractylis branch. Atractylodes species were distributed among three clades: (1) A. carlinoides (located in the lowest base of the Atractylodes phylogenetic tree), (2) A. macrocephala, and (3) the A. lancea complex, including A. japonica, A. coreana, A. lancea, A. lancea subsp. luotianensis, and A. chinensis. The taxonomic controversy over the classification of species of Atractylodes is mainly concentrated in the A. -

They are attacked by about 340 species of phytophagous insects, including 71 that are oligophagous on Cynareae. Of these Eurasian insects, 39 were ex tensively tested for host specificity, and 5 of them were sufficiently damf..ghg and stenophagous to warrant their release as biological control agents in North America. They include four beetles: Altica carduorum Guerin-Meneville, repeatedly released but not estab lished; Ceutorhynchus litura (F.), established in Canada and Montana on Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.; Rhinocyllus conicus (Froelich), widely established in the United States and Canada and beginning to reduce Carduus nutans L. populations; Trichosirocalus horridus ~Panzer), established on Carduus nutans in Virginia; and the fly Urophora stylata (F.), established on Cirsium in Canada. -

The typical way to assess range shifts is by species distribution models (SDMs), which predict species’ responses to climate based solely on projected climatic suitabil- ity. However, life history traits can impact species’ responses to shifting habitat suitability. Additionally, it remains unclear if differences in vital rates across populations within a species can offset or exacerbate the effects of predicted changes in climatic suitability on population viability. In order to obtain a fuller understanding of the response of one species to pro- jected climatic changes, we coupled demographic processes with predicted changes in suitable habitat for the monocarpic thistle Carlina vulgaris across northern Europe. We first developed a life history model with species-specific average fecun- dity and survival rates and linked it to a SDM that predicted changes in habitat suitability through time with changes in climatic variables. -

Among the numerous factors that contribute to the suc cess of social wasps, colony productivity is the most important and depends on ecological and environmental factors, such as the nest site. Consequently, nest-site choice should be determined by nest-site characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine on which species of plants Polistes gallicus wasps build their nests and identify the possible preferred features of plants used during nest-site selection by the foundress. From February to October 2017–2019 we recorded details of the nests in natural areas in south-western Spain (at 38° latitude). Nests of P. gallicus were recorded on 49 species of plants belonging to 23 families, with Scirpoides holoschoenus, Epilobium hirsutum and Foenicu- lum vulgare the most common. Signifi cantly more wasps built their nests on herbaceous than on shrub and arboreal plants, and on “green” than “brown-grey” plants.
