Thirty-eight characters derived from the larvae of Geotrupidae (Scarabaeoidea, Coleoptera) were analysed using parsimony and Bayesian infer- ence. Trees were rooted with two Trogidae species and one species of Pleocomidae as outgroups. The monophyly of Geotrupidae (including Bolboceratinae) is supported by four autapomorphies: abdominal segments 3–7 with two dorsal annulets, chaetoparia and acanthoparia of the epipharynx not prominent, glossa and hypopharynx fused and without sclerome, trochanter and femur without fossorial setae. Bolboceratinae showed notable differences with Pleocomidae, being more related to Geotrupinae than to other groups. Odonteus species (Bolboceratinae s.str.) appear to constitute the closest sister group to Geotrupi- nae. Polyphyly of Bolboceratinae is implied by the following apomorphic char- acters observed in the ‘Odonteus lineage’: anterior and posterior epitormae of epipharynx developed, tormae of epipharynx fused, oncyli of hypopharynx devel- oped, tarsal claws reduced or absent, plectrum and pars stridens of legs well developed and apex of antennal segment 2 with a unique sensorium. A ‘Bolbelas- mus lineage’ is supported by the autapomorphic presence of various sensoria on the apex of the antennal segment, and the subtriangular labrum (except Eucanthus). This group constituted by Bolbelasmus, Bolbocerosoma and Eucanthus is the first evidence for a close relationship among genera, but more characters should be analysed to test the support for the clade. -

A total of 383 family-group names were found to be available, and all are reviewed to scrutinize the correct spelling, author, date, nomenclatural availability and validity, and current classification status. Numerous corrections are given to various errors that are commonly perpetuated in the literature. -

IV, XXXIV (3-4), 2010, pp. 401 -414 MARCELLO ARNONE & B RUNO MASSA A NEW SPECIES OF BOLBELASMUS BOUCOMONT, 1911 (Insecta Coleoptera Geotrupidae ) FROM SICILY (ITALY) SUMMARY Authors have examined scrupolously all available sicilian specimens belonging to the genus Bol - belasmus , collected between 1893 and 2010, previously identified as B. gallicus and B. unicornis . They conclude that both species have to be excluded from the sicilian fauna and describe the new species B. romanorum , which is characterized by peculiar punctures on the clypeus, the head and the pronotum, and by the shape of the clypeus, the head and the aedeagus sclerites. They compare the new species with all the taxa currently known in the Mediterranean. Further, they show oscillograms of both sexes of the new species, which, as other Bolbelasmus , stridulates vigorously; they also detect for the first time the pars stridens , consisting in a series of small bristles on the lower outer border of wings; the insect emits its sound moving actively the abdomen, the friction of the wing on the first abdominal tergite, particularly swollen, produces the stridulation. RIASSUNTO Una nuova specie di Bolbelasmus Boucomont, 1911 (Insecta Coleoptera Geotrupidae) della Sici - lia (Italia) . Attraverso un accurato studio degli esemplari siciliani del genere Bolbelasmus raccolti in Sicilia nell’arco di poco più di un secolo, in precedenza ritenuti B. gallicus e B. unicornis , vengono escluse entrambe le specie dalla fauna siciliana ed è istituita la nuova specie B. romanorum , caratte - rizzata da una peculiare punteggiatura del clipeo, del capo e del pronoto, dalla forma del clipeo e del capo e dalla forma dei parameri dell’edeago. -

Postal 63, Xalapa, Veracruz 91000, MÉXICO RESUMEN Se presenta una revisión histórica del proceso de clasificación y el desarrollo de la sistemática de los Lamellicornia o Scarabaeoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera), dividida en tres períodos. El análisis comprende un estudio histórico-comparativo sobre el desarrollo del tipo y número de caracteres, así como el número y características de los géneros y agrupamientos en taxones supragenéricos. El primer período abarca 14 autores en diferentes fechas, iniciando en 1735 con Linné y terminando en 1856 con Lacordaire. En este período se abordan trabajos anteriores a la publicación del “Origen de las Especies”, por lo cual las ideas evolucionistas darwinianas no tuvieron influencia sobre la sistemática del grupo. En el segundo período se presenta una comparación de las propuestas de clasificación de los Coleoptera Scarabaeoidea, publicadas entre 1869 y 1955 por 17 autores de trabajos faunísticos y taxonómicos regionales o en catálogos mundiales. Se destacan los principales caracteres morfológicos utilizados para la separación supragenérica y las inovaciones introducidas por cada uno de ellos, señalando en su caso, la posible influencia de las teorías de Darwin. Se concluye que el esquema general de clasificación durante este período no cambió substancialmente con respecto al de Burmeister o Lacordaire, y que las ideas evolucionistas tuvieron poca repercusión en estas clasificaciones, las cuales son más complejas que las del primer período, sobre todo por la adición de más de 11,000 especies nuevas obtenidas durante 80 años de exploraciones mundiales. -

Introduction Odonteus armiger (Scopoli, 1772) is the smallest European representative of the Geotrupidae family (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea). In older works (e.g. [1-3]), it also appeared under the specific name mobilicornis (Fabricius, 1775), due to the male’s mobile cephalic horn, and the light coloured varieties were described as a separated species: testaceus (Fabricius, 1775). Although the accepted genus is now Odonteus Samouelle 1819 [4] , the species also appears under the genus Bolboceras Kirby 1819, Bolbocerus Kirby 1829 and Odontaeus Dejean 1821, please see the discussion associated with the ICZN ruling for further details [5-10]. -

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] 3Co-corresponding author Abstract A taxonomic overview of the essentially Oriental genus Bolbochromus Boucomont, 1909 is given. Two new southeast Asian subgenera are proposed: Metabolbochromus (type species Scarabaeus sulcicollis Wiedemann, 1819), characterised by unique male genitalia (lacking separated parameres), and Bolbochromops (type species Bolboceras ludekingi Lansberge, 1886), with a distinctly two-horned head (but with separated parameres). The remaining known Bolbochromus, apparently all with a distinct pair of parameres and a distinct frontovertexal protrusion only, are left in the nominotypical subgenus, awaiting a reappraisal of the poorly sampled continental fauna. Four new species are described and compared with close relatives, all in the nominotypical subgenus: Bolbochromus (Bolbochromus) dumogensis (Sulawesi), B. (Bolbochromus) mindanaicus (Philippines), B. (Bolbochromus) pumilus (south India), and B. (Bolbochromus) sinensis (south China). Identity of type species of Bolbochromus to be established (type of Bolboceras laetus Westwood, 1852 not found, and type locality Ceylon doubtful). All named Bolbochromus taxa are listed and characterised (some of them tentatively) in a synoptic table. -

The third instar larvae of three Anisoplia species, Anisoplia baetica Erichson, 1847,Anisoplia depressa Erichson, 1847 and Anisoplia remota Reitter, 1889 are described and illustrated to show the diagnostic characters of the species. The third instar larva of the monospecific genus Anthoplia, represented by Anthoplia floricola (F., 1787) is also described and illustrated. These four species are included in a revised key to the larvae of Anisopliini, which now includes four genera, and ten species.
