BY ROY M. WALLACK May 11, 2018 # Roy M. Wallack Forget Chris Froome, attempting a rare Giro-Tour double this year. The biggest name in the rst week of the 2018 Giro d’Italia was Sylvan Adams. Adams, a Canadian real-estate billionaire and champion masters rider, was everywhere. He was on the Jumbotron framed by the ancient stone walls of Jerusalem, presenting the pink jersey to Stage 1 winner Tom Dumoulin. In Tel Aviv two days before, he unveiled the Middle East’s rst velodrome, which bore his name. On the bandstand after the Stage 3 nish on the Red Sea, he exhorted the crowd as the race’s honorary president—a title he earned by single-handedly doing what had once been thought of as impossible: Staging the Giro’s three-day Grande Partenza (“Big Start”) in Israel, the rst-ever Grand Tour start outside of Europe. Though not without controversy that sparked occasional protests, the Big Start went off without any violence or disruptions. Racers, organizers, and onlookers said they were impressed with the route and the crowds. For Israel, it was a three- day, two-wheeled celebration that turned Adams, unknown just a month before, into a household name. As Orly Genosar, an Israeli travel writer, told Bicycling, “He could run for prime minister and win.” Who is Sylvan Adams, and how did he pull this off? The son of Quebec real-estate tycoon Marcel Adams, a Holocaust death camp escapee, Adams grew up a Zionist and visited Israel often. Now 59, he took up cycling in his 40s and became a multi-time Masters Category C national and world time-trial champion. # Spectators cheering on Stage 3 of the 2018 Giro d’Italia. Tim de Waele Getty Images ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW On a trip four years ago, thinking about how he could promote cycling—a tiny and obscure sport in Israel, especially next to basketball and soccer—Adams had an idea: build a world-class velodrome in Tel Aviv, the country’s business and population hub. Word spread fast. He was invited to ride with national champion Ran Margaliot, the rst Israeli member of a pro European team and now the manager of Israel’s only pro team, the Israel Cycling Academy (ICA). Adams decided to invest in the ICA, and two years later he and his wife unexpectedly moved to Israel. Soon something even more unexpected happened. At a May 2016 dinner in Italy during that year’s Giro, Adams was trying to persuade race director Mauro Vegni to commit to a future entry for his ICA team. He then made a crazy proposition: have the 2018 Big Start in Israel. “I might have had a few drinks,” Adams said. “Mauro thought I was joking.” But Vegni raised a tantalizing eyebrow. The Giro had previously started in France, Monaco, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, and Slovenia. The 2014 edition started in Belfast. In fact, the race starts in a non-Italian country every two years, and 2018 would be the Giro’s 101th anniversary and Israel’s 70th birthday. In full pitch mode, Adams told him about Israel’s roads and variety of mountains, desert, and seashore. That it had a growing cycling culture. That was safe— statistically safer, in fact, than some countries that had already hosted the Giro start. And, of course, the heart of the argument: A Big Start in Israel would get lots of attention, and TV ratings. # Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldal, left, with Sylvan Adams at Israel’s frst velodrome. Guy Yehiel/Tel Aviv Municipality Adams also mentioned a historic Italian-Israeli cycling connection. Gino Bartali, Italy’s legendary three-time Giro and two-time Tour de France champion, is a local hero. During the Holocaust, he saved about 800 Jews from Nazi gas chambers and risked his life dozens of times by pedaling through German lines with counterfeit documents hidden in his seat tube. Both men agreed to dedicate the 2018 Giro to Bartali’s memory. (In a ceremony on May 2, Bartali’s granddaughter, Guilia, received Gino’s honorary Israeli citizenship—with Adams by her side, of course.) Intrigued by the chance to expand the Giro brand, Vegni visited Adams in Israel to check out the infrastructure and topography. Negotiations lasted about a year, in which time Adams received an in-person blessing from Pope Francis, wooed the mayors of Jerusalem and his new hometown of Tel Aviv, and even got Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a bike. He and Vegni shook hands at the last stage of the 2017 Giro in Milan. " “It was a unique opportunity that was too “I want to develop the big to turn down,” Vegni said. According to sport, which like all Amir Halevi, director general of Israel’s sports has the power Ministry of Tourism, the country paid $4 million of the Giro’s $20 million price tag. to build bridges.” Adams paid the rest. “I want to develop the sport, which like all sports has the power to build bridges—between black and white, Arab and Jew,” Adams said. “Along with the Tel Aviv velodrome and bike paths, it can bring us together.” Lior Federbusch, a Jerusalem print shop owner and longtime cyclist, hopes the race will have a unifying effect for spectators. “Whether they are Jews or Arabs, young, old, cyclist or no cyclist, they see the racers y past them and they think, ‘Someday I’m going to go get on a bike and go fast.’ Or maybe someday even do this race,” he said. Roy Goldstein, 25, standing next to Federbusch on the Tel Aviv coast at the nishing chute of Stage 2, nodded. Goldstein is the third-best Israeli on the ICA, and just missed the Giro cut this year. “I was the next option,” he said. “But I’m signed for two years. I will make it next year. And someday, I will ride in Paris and in Rome.” ROY M. WALLACK Roy M. Want to drool over the latest and greatest bikes? Sign up for the most comprehensive gear reviews out there. • Ranking the Greatest Cyclists of All Time
The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling Rankinghttps://www.theouterline.com The Greatest Cyclists Of All Time Who are the greatest male cyclists of all time? That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time. The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans.

The eight-stage race went from Milan to Bologna and onward to Chieti, Naples, Rome, Florence, Genoa and Turin, returning to Milan on the 30th. Riders would cover 2,445 kilometers over eight stages, an average stage length of 306 kilometers, the Fist, not far from the Tour’s average. This was to be the shortest Giro ever. It should be noted that in the early years of bike racing distances were approximate. The various lengths we have for the first Giro, 2408, 2448, and 2445 kilometers—each from a dif- ferent but respected Italian writer—are all within the expected and the range of accuracy of the age. To minimize cheating and confusion, each of the riders was King of Mud photographed at the start for later comparison by the judges. Just as in the first couple of editions of the Tour, the Giro would allow several days of recovery between each stage. The riders faced roads that could only be described as menacing, especially in economically disadvantaged southern Italy.

  • Alla Corrente
ALLA CORRENTE FAUSTO COPPI (1919–1960) From Saturday July 5th to Sunday July 27th, 2014, the 101st Tour de France will take place. This year it is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,664 kilometers (roughly 2,277 miles). It will begin in the United Kingdom (in Leeds), and will go through Belgium, Spain, and France before ending on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 27. Last July, Alla Corrente described the cycling exploits of one of Italy’s greatest cyclists, Gino Bartali (1914–2000). It also described his other role during World War II as a courier/spy for the Italian resistance, and his efforts to save Jews during the Italian Holocaust and German occupation. Since this is the July 2014 Bulletin and since there is much interest among Cenacolisti about the Tour, I thought it would be appropriate to offer this Alla Cor- rente about another Italian participant in several Tour races who won it in 1949 and in 1952. FAUSTO COPPI was an Italian cyclist and the major challenger to Gino Bartali in many cycling races, including the Tour de France. His successes earned him the title Il Campionissimo, or Champion of Champions. He was an all-round racing cyclist, excelling in both climb- ing and time trials, as well as being a great sprinter. Coppi was one of five children born to Domenico Coppi and Angiolina Boveri. Fausto was the fourth child, born September 15, 1919 in Castel- lania, Piedmont, Italy. His mother wanted to call him Angelo, but his father preferred Fausto; so he was named Angelo Fausto, but was known most of his life as Fausto.
