Sultan of Brunei Visits the SAF Sultan of Brunei Visits the SAF 22 Apr 2014 His Majesty driving the Light Strike Vehicle Mark II at Headquarters 3rd Singapore Division. On his right was Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, who hosted His Majesty's visit to the SAF. The Sultan of Brunei, His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam, visited the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF's) Multi-Mission Range Complex (MMRC) and Headquarters 3rd Singapore Division (HQ 3 Div) this afternoon. His Majesty is in Singapore on a three-day State Visit from 21 to 23 Apr 2014. His Majesty was hosted by Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen, and was accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik, Minister of Education Pehin Abu Bakar Apong, Minister of Finance II Pehin Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II Pehin Lim Jock Seng, Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office Pehin Yasmin Umar, Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Pehin Major General Tawih Abdullah, as well as senior Bruneian officials. Also present during the visit were Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng and Chief of Army Brigadier-General Perry Lim. While at MMRC, His Majesty viewed live-firing demonstrations at the 50m indoor shooting range and the urban operations range, and also fired the Singapore Assault Rifle 21. During his visit to HQ 3 Div, His Majesty viewed a static display of the 3rd Generation SAF's military hardware and also drove the upgraded Light Strike Vehicle Mark II (LSV MK II) as well as the Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicle. His Majesty also met with the RBAF personnel currently attending the SAF courses in Singapore. To commemorate the visit, His Majesty was presented with the SAF's Honorary Advanced Combat Skills Badge as well as Honorary Terrex and LSV MK II Driver's Licenses. His Majesty's visit to the SAF underscores the excellent and long-standing defence ties between Singapore and Brunei. Interactions between the SAF and RBAF have grown in scope with a wide range of activities, such as bilateral exercises, regular visits and professional exchanges. The Army and the Royal Brunei Land Forces will conduct their flagship Exercise Maju Bersama in Singapore next month, and mark 20 years of cooperation next year. Rally and mobilise tripartite partners and training providers to establish a sizeable bank of SGUnited Jobs and Skills opportunities, catering to various sectors and every skill level; and c. Enable Singaporeans to take full advantage of the scaled-up opportunities, through tight coordination across Government and tripartite partners and effective implementation of: i. Job creation and matching; ii. Attachments and training for re-skilling; and iii. Job redesign in support of enterprise transformation. 3. The Council will oversee the design and implementation of the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package announced in the Fortitude Budget.

The Chief of Staff of the French Air Force (FAF) General (GEN) Denis Mercier was conferred Singapore's prestigious military award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or the Meritorious Service Medal (Military)], by President Tony Tan Keng Yam. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the award to GEN Mercier at the Ministry of Defence this morning. GEN Mercier was conferred the award in recognition of his outstanding contributions and efforts in forging excellent defence ties between the FAF and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). The relationship between the two air forces has deepened under GEN Mercier's leadership. GEN Mercier has provided strong support for the RSAF's training in Cazaux Air Base which enabled the RSAF to strengthen its training efforts, produce more capable fighter pilots and meet its training needs. GEN Mercier has also lent invaluable support to greater military-to-military interactions, such as through the attachment of an FAF Qualified Flying Instructor to the RSAF Fighter Wings Course Programme. These interactions have strengthened the professionalism and mutual friendship between the personnel of both air forces. Speaking after the investiture, GEN Mercier said, "I feel sincerely honoured to be conferred the award by the President of the Republic of Singapore. It is also a great privilege for me to receive the medal from the Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen.

    19 Jun 2015 LIEUTENANT-GENERAL NG CHEE MENG Chief of Defence Force Singapore Armed Forces LG Ng was appointed Chief of Defence Force on 27 March 2013. He joined the SAF in December 1986, was awarded the SAF Overseas Training Award (Graduating) in 1987 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1991. In 1999, he attended the Singapore Command and Staff College and graduated as the top student. In 2002, he was awarded the SAF Postgraduate Award and pursued a Master of Arts (International Relations) at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, United States of America. A fighter pilot by vocation, LG Ng held various key command and staff appointments over 28 years of service. These included Commanding Officer, 144 Squadron; Commander, Changi Air Base; Deputy Head, Joint Communications and Information Systems Department; Head Air Plans Department; Director Joint Operations; and Deputy Chief of Air Force. He also held the concurrent appointment as Military Private Secretary to the Minister for Defence from December 1995 to July 1996. In his last appointment as the Chief of Air Force, LG Ng led the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) to a high level of operational readiness and built on the successful Third Generation RSAF transformation. Initiatives were put in place to train and develop its people to meet future demands, especially in the fields of operations and engineering. Key capabilities were also delivered in the form of the F-15SG Strike Eagle, G550 Airborne Early Warning aircraft, S-70B naval helicopter, Heron-1 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and renewed air defence concepts and weapon systems.

Witnessed by Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, MG Ng, the former Chief of Air Force (CAF) received the SAF's symbol of command from the outgoing CDF, Lieutenant-General (LG) Neo Kian Hong. During the parade, LG Neo and MG Ng reviewed a Guard of Honour and the 13 marching contingents formed by servicemen from the Army, Navy and Air Force. MG Ng, who joined the SAF in 1986, has held several key appointments, including Head, Air Plans Department; Commander, Changi Air Base; and Director of Joint Operations. As CAF since 10 Dec 2009, MG Ng has led the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) with distinction, achieving a high level of operational readiness and seeing through the successful transformation of the 3rd Generation Air Force. Under his steadfast leadership, the RSAF has grown as a highly professional force with a strong safety record, centred on people development. MG Ng has forged close working relations between the RSAF and air forces around the world. He has also overseen the RSAF's engagement with the community, through outreach programmes and partnerships with schools.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam officiated at a ceremony to mark the commissioning of RSS Swordsman, the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) second Archer-class submarine, at Changi Naval Base this afternoon. DPM Tharman presented the commissioning warrant to the Commanding Officer of RSS Swordsman, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Loh Mun Heng, at the ceremony. He also visited RSS Swordsman where he received a brief by LTC Loh on the capabilities of RSS Swordsman. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, DPM Tharman highlighted that the RSN has reached a new milestone in its submarine development with both Archer-class submarines entering active service. "RSS Swordsman, her sister boat RSS Archer and our Challenger-class submarines form part of an integrated warfighting system - together with our stealth frigates, naval helicopters, missile corvettes and mine-countermeasure vessels - a force that safeguards Singapore's maritime interests and protects our territorial integrity," said DPM Tharman. The pioneer crew of RSS Swordsman had undergone a comprehensive training programme which comprised a Submarine System Training Phase, where they were taught to operate the various submarine systems, and a Team Training Phase, where the crew conducted mission-oriented trainings. RSS Swordsman was acquired from the Royal Swedish Navy in 2005 and was launched in Karlskrona, Sweden on 20 Oct 2010. She underwent various comprehensive and extensive sea trials in Sweden before returning to Singapore on 31 Dec 2012.
