Every year &om July to February, four fishing cooperativesare aHowedto exploit spinylobsters and serranid fishes in the area. • Karyological and Molecular Analysis of Three Endemic Loaches (Actinopterygii: Cobitoidea) from Kor River Basin, Iran
Molecular Biology Research Communications 2015;4(1):1-13 MBRC Original Article Open Access Karyological and molecular analysis of three endemic loaches (Actinopterygii: Cobitoidea) from Kor River basin, Iran Hamid Reza Esmaeili1,*, Zeinab Pirvar1, Mehragan Ebrahimi1, Matthias F. Geiger2 1) Department of Biology, College of Sciences, Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran 2) Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig, Leibniz Institute for Animal Biodiversity, Adenauerallee, Germany ABSTRACT This study provides new data on chromosomal characteristics and DNA barcoding of three endemic loaches of Iran: spiny southern loach Cobitis linea (Heckel, 1847), Persian stream loach Oxynoemacheilus persa (Heckel, 1848) and Tongiorgi stream loach Oxynoemacheilus tongiorgii (Nalbant & Bianco, 1998). The chromosomes of these fishes were investigated by examining metaphase chromosome spreads obtained from epithelial gill and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome numbers of all three species were 2n=50. The karyotypes of C. linea consisted of 4M + 40SM + 6ST, NF=94; of O. persa by 20M + 22SM + 8ST, NF=90 and of O. tongiorgii by 18M + 24SM + 8ST, NF= 92. Sex chromosomes were cytologically indistinguishable in these loaches. Maximum likelihood-based estimation of the phylogenetic relationships based on the COI barcode region clearly separates the three Iranian loach species of the Kor River basin. All species distinguished by morphological characters were recovered as monophyletic clades by the COI barcodes. The obtained results could be used for population studies,Archive management and conservatio n programs.of SID Key words: Loaches; Phylogenetic relationships; COI barcode region; Idiogram; Iran INTRODUCTION The confirmed freshwater ichthyofauna of Iran are represented by 202 species in 104 genera, 28 families, 17 orders and 3 classes found in 19 different basins [1].

ARAUJO´ * Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Laborato´rio de Ecologia de Peixes, Km 47, Antiga Rodovia Rio – Sao˜ Paulo, 23851-970, Seropedica, RJ, Brazil (Received 13 February 2007, Accepted 22 November 2007) Five species of flatfishes in a tropical bay in south-eastern Brazil were studied to test the hypothesis that resource partitioning along the spatial and size dimensions has been used as a mechanism to enable coexistence. Three zones in the study area were defined according to environmental characteristics (inner, middle and outer). Sampling was conducted by otter trawl tows during daylight hours, between October 1998 and September 1999. Achiridae species (Achirus lineatus and Trinectes paulistanus) showed narrow niche width, indicating a specialized feeding strategy, preying on Polychaeta, and occurring mainly in the inner bay zone. Paralichthyidae (Citharichthys spilopterus and Etropus crossotus) and the Cynoglossidae (Symphurus tessellatus) showed broad niche width and a generalized feeding strategy preying on a large number of Crustacea. Symphurus tessellatus did not change diet with size-dimension feeding on Amphipoda and Polychaeta, whereas C. spilopterus and E. crossotus shifted diet with growth. Citharichthys spilopterus fed mainly on Mysida and secondarily on shrimps, with juvenile preying on large amounts of Calanoida, whereas adults consumed large amounts of fishes. Isaeidae amphipods were a significant prey for both small and large E.

  • Health and Condition in Fish: the Influence of Lipids on Membrane Competency and Immune Response
Chapter 10 Health and Condition in Fish: The Influence of Lipids on Membrane Competency and Immune Response Michael T. Arts and Christopher C. Kohler 10.1 The Influence of Lipids on Health and Condition Traditionally fisheries biologists have used various metrics to indicate the condition and, by implication, health of fish. These indices are usually based on relationships between length and weight (Anderson and Neumann 1996) . Although such metrics can, under some circumstances, provide a quick estimate of a fish’s condition, their ability to shed light on the underlying cause-and-effect relationship(s) governing a fish’s health and nutritional status are limited. Biochemical measures (e.g. lipids including fatty acids (FA) and sterols, proteins and their constituent amino acids, and trace elements) offer complimentary measures to assess, in a more specific way, the condition and underlying health of fish. Fatty acids and other lipids affect the health of fish in many ways; including, but not limited to, their effects on growth, reproduction, behavior, vision, osmoregularity, membrane fluidity (thermal adaptation), and immune response. In this review, we focus on the latter two roles that lipids play in mediating the health and condition of fish. 10.2 The Influence of Lipids on Membrane Fluidity and Other Membrane Properties 10.2.1 Homeoviscous Adaptation Aquatic organisms are exposed to varying and sometimes extreme environmental conditions (e.g., marked changes in temperature) that can induce strong and often debilitating effects on their physiology. Fish in temperate regions and at high altitudes must adapt to changing temperatures throughout the year. Behavioral and physiological M.T.

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 79(3): 455–468, 2006 4TH INT. BILLFISH SYMP. KEYNOTE ADDRESS PHYLOGENY OF RECENT BILLFISHES (XIPHIOIDEI) Bruce B. Collette, Jan R. McDowell, and John E. Graves ABSTRACT Billfishes are genetically and morphologically distinct enough from scombroids to merit placement in a separate suborder, Xiphioidei. Two extant families are usually recognized: Xiphiidae (swordfish, Xiphias) and Istiophoridae, currently containing three genera, Istiophorus (sailfishes), Makaira (marlins), and Tetrapturus (spear- fishes, white, and striped marlins). Phylogenetic analyses of molecular data from mi- tochondrial and nuclear gene sequences (mitochondrial control region, ND2, 12S, and nuclear MN 32 regions) show a different picture of relationships.Makaira is not monophyletic: blue marlin cluster with sailfish and placement of black marlin is un- stable. Accepting the molecular phylogeny gives two possible classifications: (1) two genera: blue marlin + sailfish (asIstiophorus ) and all the rest (as Tetrapturus), or (2) five genera: blue marlin (Makaira), sailfish (Istiophorus), black marlin (Istiompax), striped and white marlin (Kajikia), and four spearfishes Tetrapturus( ). We prefer the latter possibility. There is no genetic evidence to support recognition of separate species of Atlantic and Indo-Pacific sailfishes or blue marlins. Atlantic white marlin, Kajikia albida (Poey, 1860) is closely related to Indo-Pacific striped marlin, Kajikia audax (Philippi, 1887). The four spearfishes are closely related: the three Atlantic species, longbill (Tetrapturus pfluegeri Robins and de Sylva, 1963), Mediterranean (Tetrapturus belone Rafinesque, 1810), and roundscale Tetrapturus( georgii Lowe, 1841), and the one Indo-Pacific species, shortbill Tetrapturus( angustirostris Tana- ka, 1915). The roundscale is the most divergent of the spearfishes. A fifth putative Tetrapturus sp., the “hatchet marlin” clusters with roundscale spearfish but these two “species” could not be differentiated in this analysis.
