He is in all and for all. He is our frame of reference as we learn from the world around us. Therefore, His Word holds a position of priority over our philosophy of education. The Christian philosophy of education is the teaching of facts that are based on the truth and the Lord Jesus Christ and that we do all for the glory of God. Its purpose is to convince the student of the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Its goal is to nurture, admonish and encourage the student to live a life of service, fully dedicated to and dependent on God in every area of their lives (Ephesians 4:1-6). The Scripture clearly states in Proverbs 22:6 and Deuteronomy 6:9-12 that the parent holds sole responsibility and privilege of stimulating the joy of learning for their children. The parent in turn authorizes the school to assist them in the education process, hence, the Christian school. REDLAND CHRISTIAN ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT 1. To guide each student toward a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2. To instill in students respect, responsibility and reverence for God, others and self. 3. To build a strong relationship with parents as we work together to reach the educational and spiritual goals for each child. 4. To offer a quality, God-centered educational program. 5. To provide a learning environment in which the student may develop spiritually, academically, socially, mentally and physically. 4 6. To meet the individual needs of the student through proper placement and continuing guidance. 5 GENERAL INFORMATION Welcome to Redland Christian Academy. Since the mid-1970's, we have given parents an opportunity to send their children to a private school which offers smaller classes, traditional learning styles, and most importantly, God-centered teaching. R.C.A. is operated by members of the Homestead Church of Christ and is governed by a board of directors. R.C.A. is FULLY ACCREDITED by the Florida Independent School Association and is a member of both the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the National Christian School Association (NCSA). R.C.A. is incorporated as a 501C3 non-profit organization by the State of Florida. The efforts of our entire staff are directed toward providing the best educational environment and facility for your children. Our goal is to provide every student the opportunity to achieve success academically and spiritually. The curriculum we use at R.C.A. helps us attain that goal. In addition to our fine academic curriculum, each student will have daily Bible classes. Each student will also attend daily or weekly chapel services, taking time out to praise God and give Him the glory. Thank you for trusting us with your child's education. The pre-kindergarten program presents the child with readiness skills and basic math concepts in the context of God's creation. Hands on activities provide a meaningful connection between learning and the real world. In our Elementary grades, the curriculum is integrated with the basic Christian belief system to help furnish the children with an understanding of God's world and their place in it. They read, write, explore and experiment. Our student to teacher ratio is 20:1. Our Junior and Senior High School trains students to become adults with strong moral convictions and also provides an excellent secondary education. Students are encouraged to pursue a college-preparatory track. Redland Christian Academy is fully accredited by the Florida Independent School Association which is recognized by the State of Florida. This means that the work your child does here and the courses he or she takes are recognized and accepted by schools nation-wide. In high school, this means your child’s courses and credits will be accepted by all institutions of higher learning. In addition to our normal academic program, R.C.A. offers the following programs and services. Before School Care Program: Redland Christian Academy offers Before School Care from 6:30 to 7:45 AM for the convenience of our parents who must leave for work before 7:45. Since all staff members except the Before School Care teacher attend a teacher’s meeting until 7:45, any student arriving to school before 7:45 will go into our Before School Care Program regardless of age. The cost for Before School Care is $2.00 per child per day. After School Care Program: Students should not remain on school grounds after 3:15pm except for pre-arranged activities or after school care, regardless of age. The After School care program runs from 3:15 to 6:00 PM sharp. For liability purposes, students are not allowed outside/inside school grounds without supervision by school staff or parents. 7 Fees: 3:15-6 PM 1 child $6.00, per day 2 or more siblings pay the same fee as one. 2 or more days $20.00, per week. An additional fee of $1.00 per minute will be added after 6:00 PM. The purpose of the late fee is not to raise funds for the school, but to discourage parents from being late. Please be considerate and pick your child up on time. R.C.A. is not responsible for the safety of any child who avoids going to morning or after care, whose parents tell them not to go, or who sneak out unnoticed. Tutoring: Tutoring is offered after school in most subjects. If you are interested in having your child tutored, please see your child’s teacher or inquire in the school office. Intramural Sports: R.C.A. is a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association and offers an intramural sports program for students in grades 6 - 12. These sports may include soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, cheerleading, track, etc. There will be a fee of $75.00 for sports to cover the cost of referees, equipment and bus transportation. Uniforms, if required, may be extra. Lunches: R.C.A. offers hot lunches every school day. Parents are encouraged to apply for possible free or reduced lunch in the office. If not approved a menu will be sent home every two weeks and you may choose what days your child buys lunch. Lunches must be paid for in advance. On days you choose not to purchase lunch, your child may bring his own from home. If your child forgets to bring his lunch to school, he will be allowed to “charge” a ham and cheese sandwich for the day. Payment for this charged lunch must be made the following day. Please do not send microwave lunches. Chapel: Chapel is a time that students, faculty and staff can commune with God. We expect chapel to be entered into respectfully and reverently, creating an atmosphere conducive to worship. While there will be appropriate time for laughter and commentary, disruptive behavior will result in disciplinary action. 8 We welcome parents to our chapel service, but respectfully request that you do not disrupt chapel by picking your child up while chapel is in progress. Fundraising: From time to time throughout the school year, we hold certain fundraisers. Participation in these fundraisers is not mandatory, but is very welcome. Redland Christian Academy strives to keep our tuition prices as low as possible, but in doing so, we sometimes have to go without some of the extras that make for a better school. Fundraisers are a way to make up the difference and allow us to purchase some of the extra equipment that makes our school more enjoyable for the students without having to raise our tuition prices. Please try to help with the fundraising whenever possible. It will help keep your tuition costs down. 9 SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Admission Policy: Redland Christian Academy seeks to enroll students who are interested in a Christian Education. It is imperative that perspective students understand that admission to R.C.A is a privilege and that if, at any time, student conduct or cooperation with school authorities is not in keeping with the school’s requirements, the administration reserves the right to terminate any student’s enrollment at its discretion.

Some schools also require hats to be worn, others might require boys to shave their heads or girls to keep their hair within a certain length. Note that the “furyoo” (“delinquent”) students are typically seen wearing oversized or unbuttoned uniforms --- e.g., guys with 50's greased hairdo wearing sunglasses and pants several sizes too big are most likely furyoo or a member of some gang! To address dress code and other related issues that were frowned upon by most students, many magnet schools that popped up during the 80's offered such alternatives as uniforms designed by top fashion moguls.

On view in Norell will be approximately 100 ensembles and accessories from MFIT’s permanent collection, as well as a compelling selection of objects borrowed from the stellar private collection of Kenneth Pool. The exhibition is organized by Patricia Mears, MFIT deputy director, and designer Jeffery Banks, guest curator. The exhibition emphasizes key Norell designs that were developed early on and remained constant throughout his career. Many examples of his day and evening wear are on view. These garments, accessories, and related objects are organized thematically to illustrate the range of Norell’s extraordinary output and the consistently outstanding quality of work produced by his atelier.     ‘Our jolly marin wear’: the queer fashionability of the sailor uniform in inter-war France and Britain. Andrew Stephenson, University of East London In September 1927 the English painter Edward Burra wrote to his close friend, the photographer Barbara Ker-Seymer in London from Cassis in the South of France about his holiday adventures on the Riviera. As well as time spent sunbathing and watching the hustle and bustle of the Mediterranean crowds, he related stories of drinking in seedy harbour-side bars and cafés and told tales of dancing in lively bal-musettes (dance halls). Burra recorded that they had also escaped the sleepy pace of Cassis for the livelier, larger port of Marseilles. The main entertainment in Marseilles consisted of watching the antics of the sailors on leave in the French Navy’s major Mediterranean base and naval dockyard. With a keen eye for the latest fashion trends, Burra updated her about the current styles on display on the Riviera and he conveyed his pleasure at buying sailor wear from the small shops in the Old Town by the port in Marseilles that specialised in selling French marin (navy) uniforms and its various accoutrements. Close to the Marseilles portside, in the Quartier réservé/ red light area of narrow Medieval streets and dark courtyards with open fronted brothels, Burra was fascinated by the prostitutes who plied their trade to the matelots (sailors) writing that ‘the Grand Rue where we get our jolly marin wear and linen trousers the guide book says is a veritable ghetto of houses of ill fame my dear I stares into every window hoping for a thrill’ (Chappell 1985: 36-37).

    SYKAS: FUSTIANS IN ENGLISHMEN’S DRESS Fustians in Englishmen’s Dress: from Cloth to Emblem By PHILIP A. SYKAS This paper examines the nature of the textiles known as fustians, originally imported but later manufactured in England. The focus is on eighteenth-century England when fustians underwent further development into modern cloth types. Evidence of the use of fustians for men’s dress, and the status of those who wore them, is explored to shed further light on the developments leading up to the association of fustian with working- class men. The paper is based on a presentation delivered at the Costume Society Symposium: Town and Country Style in 2007. The association of fustians with rural men was familiar enough in the mid-nineteenth century to feature in a village festival sketched in the children’s classic, Tom Brown’s Schooldays. From the churchyard, the field is seen ‘thronged with country folk; the men in clean, white smocks or velveteen or fustian coats’.1 The book was based on the author’s own experiences at Rugby school from 1834 to 1842, and makes use of clothing to mark class difference and social status in the countryside. During the same years, the labouring men of England’s towns also claimed fustians as their own. So much so, that the Chartist leader Feargus O’Connor (1796?-1855) proclaimed‘fu stian jackets, blistered hands, and unshorn chins’ as the proud emblems of the urban working man.2 When did fustian become such a part of the labouring scene across both urban and rural settings? This paper examines the use of fustians in the previous century to shed light on the evolution of associations between fustian and men’s dress.

    Lower School Dress Code Dress Code Realizing that a relationship exists between standards of dress and behavior/performance and that high standards of dress foster a positive self-image, Lake Highland Preparatory School maintains certain expectations which result in the following guidelines of student dress. Students are expected to dress and to groom themselves in a way which reflects neatness, moderation and appropriateness for school. Lake Highland Preparatory School students are also expected to adhere to the spirit of the guidelines specified below which reflect conservative standards of acceptability. Parental assistance in assuring that the guidelines are followed is expected and very much appreciated. All uniform items must be purchased from the school uniform company. Clothing items in The Source are not necessarily within LHP Dress Code, but may be permitted on Spirit Days. Sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, and coats for indoor use must be purchased from the school uniform company or from the school store. Following are also some additional guidelines for the required dress code. Shirts: Shirts must be tucked in at all times so the belt or waistband is visible. Shirts may not be tucked in and then “bloused” over. At least the first button of knit shirts must be fastened. Only plain white undershirts may be worn underneath shirts. Shirts may not be layered. Shorts, Skirts, Slacks: Shorts and skirts must be modest in length, no shorter than 4 inches above the knee and no longer than the middle of the knee. Short skirts and shorts do not reflect the values of LHPS. Shorts and slacks must be worn properly at the waist, not riding low on the hips.
