CATALOGUE JANUARY – JUNE 2018 Greetings from Osprey! CATALOGUE JANUARY – JUNE 2018 Greetings from Osprey! Bring out the cake and blow out the candles because 2018 marks Osprey’s 50th anniversary! Given that we have now reached this milestone, I’ve been delving into our history to see how things have changed over the years. hough our irst series, Aircam, is no longer with us, many of our series have been around for decades, including Men-at- Arms (1971), New Vanguard (originally as Vanguard in 1978) and Elite (1984). hese have been joined by dozens of new series that have expanded our list, including Weapon (2010), Combat (2013) and X-Planes (2016). his year, we are adding a brand new name to this venerable list, Air Campaign, which will take a new look at the greatest air wars in history, from the Battle of Britain to Operation Rolling hunder. You can ind more about this exciting new addition to our list on page 12. Since 2003 we have also been publishing General Military books and in the irst half of 2018 we have some very exciting titles. Morning Star, Midnight Sun (p.2), Jefrey Cox’s much-anticipated sequel to Rising Sun, Falling Skies (2014) publishes in February, and we are marking another anniversary, the centenary of the end of World War I, with 1918: Winning the War, Losing the War (p.2) which comes out in March. Our Games division was launched back in 2008, and this area of the company has gone from strength to strength ever since. One of our strongest game titles has been the multi-award-winning Frostgrave (2015) which gets its ifth supplement, Frostgrave: he Maze of Malcor (p.26) in May. It has gone into company lore that in 1974, Men-at-Arms series editor Martin Windrow thought that the series had maybe one year left in it. hat series now has over 500 books, and the whole Osprey list totals over 3,000. Over the 50 years we have grown, evolved and taken on new challenges, but what has remained unaltered is our goal of producing high-quality, informative books for military history enthusiasts. Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers. Careful consideration is given throughout to questions of style, register, and politeness which are essential to achieving an appropriate level of formality or informality in writing and speech. The book surveys the contemporary linguistic scene and gives ample space to the new varieties of Italian that are emerging in modern Italy. The influence of the dialects in shaping the development of Italian is also acknowledged. Clear, readable and easy to consult via its two indexes, this is an essential reference for learners seeking access to the finer nuances of the Italian language. j. j. kinder is Associate Professor of Italian at the Department of European Languages and Studies, University of Western Australia. SHIP BUILDING AND REPAIRING IN ITALY, 1861-1913: NATIONAL AND REGIONAL TIME SERIES Abstract This paper presents the first comprehensive national and regional time-series estimates for ship building and repairing in post-Unification Italy. The path of the national aggregate differs markedly from the extant series, which cover merchant new-construction alone. The regional estimates point to considerable concentration: Liguria accounted for more than half the product, and Campania for almost another quarter. In Liguria, too, this sector represented up to a quarter of total industrial production; elsewhere, and nationally, it was barely significant. • The Juniper Coast: a Survey of the Medieval Shipwrecks
THE JUNIPER COAST: A SURVEY OF THE MEDIEVAL SHIPWRECKS OF NOVY SVET, UKRAINE A Thesis by JOHN ARTHUR ALBERTSON Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Chair of Committee, C. Wayne Smith Committee Members, Filipe Vieira de Castro Daniel Schwartz Head of Department, Cynthia Werner August 2014 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2014 John Arthur Albertson ABSTRACT This thesis provides an accurate, comprehensive physical context for the extent underwater archaeological excavations in the Bay of Novy Svet, located on the southeast coast of the Crimean Peninsula. In addition, it presents vital new historical context and explores new archaeological assemblages discovered while mapping the 100 x 250m2 research site. These include minimal hull remains, concretions, ceramics and an assemblage of anchors and ships equipment dating from antiquity to the modern day. Certain of these may indicate an 11th century wreck site, while others provide probable evidence for seafaring on the bay as early as the foundation of Sudak in 212 A.D. or before. These findings reinforce the work they are built on, and provide improved digital tools for future research. Results are assessed alongside historic and archaeological documentation of medieval and modern activity in the region, including invasive and destructive actions around the Bay of Novy Svet. In addition, the historical record has suggested that a 13th century wreck in the bay may be a Pisan ship burned there by the Genoese after a battle in 1277. While no proof of correlation has been found to date, extent datasets do not preclude the possibility, and support it to some extent.

  • Slavery, Subalternity, Empire: Performing the Multicultural Mediterranean in Italian Comedy
SLAVERY, SUBALTERNITY, EMPIRE: PERFORMING THE MULTICULTURAL MEDITERRANEAN IN ITALIAN COMEDY Tessa C. Gurney A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Studies. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Ennio Rao Marisa Escolar Valeria Finucci Federico Luisetti Ellen Welch © 2016 Tessa C. Gurney ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Tessa Gurney: Slavery, Subalternity, Empire: Performing the Multicultural Mediterranean in Italian Comedy (Under the direction of Ennio Rao) In the sixteenth century, the powerful Ottoman Empire is expanding further west. In Italy and elsewhere in Europe, exotic visitors are arriving each day from the vast and elusive oltremare. Others depart from Christendom, “turning Turk” in search of a new life or increased social mobility. Corsairs patrol the Mediterranean and its coastal areas, looking for slaves to row their powerful galleys. This period of increased conflict on the Mediterranean Sea converges with Italian theater’s golden age. The already established negative stereotypes of the Turk thus find an appropriate home in comedy, a genre uniquely equipped to incorporate cultural aspersions. Comedy manages the popular fear of the “Turkish menace” as Turks are represented as barbarous pirates, sexual predators, or as a weak, often female, subaltern. This study traces the discourse of the Other in early modern Italian comedy by focusing on racial differences, religious erasures, and issues of gender in an attempt to identify an origin for certain racial tropes still present in contemporary Italian literature and culture. Special attention is paid to the work of several playwrights from various parts of the Peninsula.
