Buffer: Mariology of Cardinal Journet THE MARIOLOGY OF CARDINALJOURNET (1891-1975) AND ITS INFLUENCE ON SOME MARIAN MAGISTERIAL STATEMENTS Thomas Buffer, S.T.D. * Charles Journet was born in 1891, just outside of Geneva. He died in 1975, having taught ftfty-six years at the Grande Seminaire in Fribourg. During that time he co-founded the journal Nova et Vetera, 1 became a personal friend of Jacques Maritain, 2 and gained fame as a theologian of the Church. Ecce Mater Tua Observations on Pope Francis' "March 24, 2021” Comments ROBERT FASTIGGI Vatican II teaches that we must adhere to ordinary teachings of the Roman Pontiff according to his manifest mind and will, which may be known— among other indications— “from his manner of speaking” (Lumen Gentium, 25). In general audiences, discourses, and homilies, popes sometimes express personal opinions without intending to impose their views on the faithful. On March 24, the day before the Solemnity of the Annunciation, Pope Francis dedicated his Wednesday General Audience to prayer in communion with Mary. In his audience, the Holy Father reminds us that Christian prayer is directed to God “through Christ, with Christ and in Christ.” Referring to the Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC] no, 2674, he points out that “Christ is the Mediator; Christ is the bridge that we cross to turn to the Father.” He then states that Christ is the only Redeemer: there are no co- redeemers with Christ.” As with any text, including Sacred Scripture, we must understand what is said within a context, taking into account “the manner of speaking” and the intention of the author. When the Holy Father says there are no co-redeemers with Christ, he is highlighting Christ’s unique status as the God-man, the one Mediator between God and the human race (1 Tim 2:5). His intention is made clear when he cites Acts 4:12: “there is no other name by which we can be saved.” He is certainly not denying the teaching of Vatican II that “the unique mediation of the Redeemer does not exclude but rather gives rise to a manifold cooperation which is but a sharing in this one source” (Lumen Gentium, 62). -

I am writing first to express my heartfelt gratitude for your work as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. I am espe- cially grateful for your explanation of the Holy Father’s exhortation, Amoris laetitia, in harmony with the full Catholic teaching on the Sacrament of Matrimony. I was very encouraged by what you said in your interview with the journal, Il Timone: “It is not Amoris laetitia that has provoked a confused interpretation, but some con- fused interpreters of it” (Non è “Amoris laetitia” che ha provocato una confusa interpreta- zione, ma alcuni confusi interpreti di essa). I read with interest your interview with Father Carlos Granados, which was published in English as The Cardinal Müller Report (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 2017). You bring forth so many excellent insights that I hesitate to bring up a point of disagreement. I believe, however, that I must respond to your rejection of the Marian title, Co-redemptrix (Corredentora), which is translated into English as “co- redeemer” on p. 133 of The Cardinal Müller Report. Here is the passage that I find difficult to accept. On the Natural and Revealed Meaning of Human Sexuality: Response to John Hittinger’s “Plato and Aristotle on the Family and the Polis” Paul Gondreau, Providence College In his essay, Prof. John Hittinger suggests that a metaphysical understanding of the human being is needed for an adequate understanding of human sexuality, and that the Christian faith sheds considerable, even new, light on such an understanding. Responding to this, this essay argues that in an anthropology that takes the body as integral to our human identity, in contrast to a Cartesian-like account which does not, human sexuality is naturally ordered to marriage as a procreative-unitive institution. As a body-soul composite unity, the human being enjoys a dual (yet inseparable) ordering to the joint goods of procreation and unitive love. The biblical account, particularly the Genesis creation narrative, confirms unequivocally this joint ordering and lends especial attention to the personalist or unitive ordering of our sexuality. That God himself, in his assumed humanity, takes on a (male) sexed nature, and that our sexuality gains a share in the sacramental economy through the sacrament of marriage indicates, indeed, what kind of “new” understanding of the meaning and purpose of human sexuality is offered in the Christian faith. In his paper on the family and the polis in Plato and Aristotle, Professor Hittinger turns toward a metaphysical understanding of the human being in order to gain an adequate grasp of human sexuality, or sexual differentiation, and its place in political society. I agree wholeheartedly with this approach. (So does Pope Benedict XVI, I might point out, who near the end of his pontificate asserted “the very notion of what being human really means” is called into question when society attempts to deny the “true structure of the family, made up of father, mother, and child.”1) I also appreciate Prof. -

The public liturgical prayer in the Holy Year 2000 (March 12) was well-considered and carefully prepared, especially with the publication of a document of the International Theological Commission entitled: Memory and Reconciliation: The Church and the Faults of the Past. Pope John Paul II empha- sized: »Acknowledging the weaknesses of the past is an act of honesty and courage.« It shows the vitality of the Church, which can offer to individuals and to society an example of repentance and conversion. D. Director, Reinhard Hütter, Dr. theol., Dr. theol. habil. Cardinal Charles Journet’s theology of the history of salvation Essai de Théologie de l’Historie du Salut, Volume IV of his L’Église du Verbe incarné (EVI), prioritized the divinity of Christ and illustrated a strong Christological focus, both of which serve as a basis for his theology of grace. The internal, theological logic of EVI IV is this: Christ’s Incarnation and redemption caused a development in sanctifying grace; the change in grace caused a development of the Church; these two developments defined the way in which salvation history unfolds in the world. Journet’s overarching organizing theological principle is that all things are ordered to the glory of Christ. The Father glorifies Christ for His objective redemption of fallen man, wherein a new order of grace (Christic grace) is inaugurated. In addition, man actually reaching beatitude subjectively (via a graced love of preference) results in man rendering a twofold glory to God.
