For the Sunday of October 12, the story of Aaron and the golden calf in Exodus 32: 1-14 reminds us that worshiping anyone or anything other than the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is idolatry. With that distinction in mind, we are nonetheless called to celebrate God’s creation and honor the role we’ve been given as stewards of it. The celebration of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4 reminds us of this calling to care for God’s creatures and to celebrate the bounty of God’s goodness to us, manifested in the essential goodness of creation. Harrison Ave; E-I-94 Freeway; W-S. 16th St SOUTH SIDELincoln Village NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION Lincoln Village is a residential neighborhood with modest homes and strong commercial corridors along West Lincoln Avenue, South 6th Street, and South 16th Street. It is rare to see a commercial building unoccupied and vacant lots simply do not exist in the business district. The corridors truly house “mom and pop” shops. The stores Todays neighborhood- The Basilica of St. Josaphat are small by comparison to other neighborhoods, and tend to have long-term occupants. There are nearly 20 ethnic restaurants or delis along these blocks, representing Mexican, Salvadoran, Serbian, and Polish food. Two architectural styles are of note in Lincoln Village. One style is commercial, where walls extend above the roof of the buildings and are called parapets (see photos below). These can be angular or curved, and represent an architectural style that was brought from northern Poland to the neighbor- hood. The style had originally been developed by the Danes, then brought to Germany, and the Germans erected buildings with parapets in northern Poland. The other architecture style of note is residential, and is called the “Polish flat.” This developed at the grassroots. Most Poles who arrived in Milwaukee were intent on home and land ownership. Often their first paychecks went toward purchasing narrow lots where they would build three to four room cottages. However, as families grew and more relatives arrived, the homeowners lacked space on the lots to enlarge the homes. Often they raised the cottages and replaced the wood foundations with brick or cement block. -

Its follow-up, La forza della ragione (The Force of Reason), has already sold 800,000 copies since its publication in 2004. In other words, Oriana Fallaci has emerged after 9/11 as the strongest and most vocal Italian representative of the “clash of civilisations” theory. This essay analyses the constitutive elements of her discourse (Italian nationalism, values instead of history and politics, and violent speech conflating Islam, terrorism and immigrants) and tries to understand its appeal and the sources of its authority in Fallaci’s career, in order to outline the specific Italian version of the clash of civilisations “theory”. -

Biography of pope john paul ii pdf Continue John Paul II (1920-2005) CAROL JASEF VODYA, elected Pope on October 16, 1978, was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was the third of three children born to Karol Oytytya and Emilia Kakovsky, who died in 1929. His older brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932, and his father, Carol, a non-commissioned officer in the army, died in 1941. He was nine years old when he received his First Communion and eighteen years when he received the Sacrament of Confirmation. After graduating from high school in Vadowice, he enrolled at the University of Jagelon in Krakow in 1938. When the Nazi occupying forces closed the university in 1939, Karol worked (1940-1944) in a quarry and then at the Solvea chemical plant to earn a living and avoid deportation to Germany. Feeling called to the priesthood, he began his studies in 1942 at a secret large seminary in Krakow under the direction of Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapiehi. At the time, he was one of the organizers of the Rhapsodic Theatre, which was also underground. After the war, Carol continued his studies at the main seminary, recently reopened, and at the School of Theology at Jagelon University, before his priestly ordination in Krakow on November 1, 1946. Father Oytysha was then sent by Cardinal Sapieha to Rome, where he received his doctorate in theology (1948). He wrote his thesis on faith, as is understood in the works of St. John the Cross. As a student in Rome, he spent his holidays performing pastoral service with Polish expats in France, Belgium and Holland. -

Our Faith in the School of Mary
IN MARY’S SCHOOL OF FAITH TODAY Introduction The Year of Faith opened by our meanwhile Pope emeritus Benedict XVI and continued by Pope Francis aims at the transmission of the faith in our secularized world. God’s providence foresaw a striking dynamic for this year commemorating the 50 th anniversary of Vatican Council II. From October to February we could attend lectures given by Benedict XVI. He taught us the content of faith and how to penetrate it with heart and mind. It appears that Pope Francis wants to send us to the areopaghi 1 of our times in order to become witnesses to the faith. A few days prior to the solemn opening of the Year of Faith the XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops was launched. Synods can be likened to a graduate seminar, a think tank for the realities of the universal church. Last October the participants deliberated on how “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith” can succeed in our time. At stake is not simply boosting Mass attendance or advocating regular prayer; although a sound spiritual life was, is and will always remain at the heart of being Christian. Yet, evangelization aims at engaging broad social and cultural challenges 2 through a distinctively Christlike lens. In other words, faith is authentic and attractive "when, through our actions, words and way of being, Another makes himself present.” 3 Ultimately, such a transformation is a gift of grace supported by an educational process. 4 With this paper we want to consider the Meaning of the Year of Faith from a Pedagogical Perspective.
