The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II TO A GROUP OF CHRISTIAN WORKERS Saturday, 9 December 1978 Beloved Brothers and Sisters, workers of Montedison, the Alfa Romeo Company, Pirelli, "Corriere delIa Sera", and other Companies, belonging to the" Groups of commitment and Christian presence", welcome to the house of the common Father! 1. I know that you have been waiting for this Audience with the Pope for some time. You already wished to meet Pope John Paul I, of venerated memory, who—I am told—was a familiar figure in the large factory at Porto Marghera. The Lord called him to Himself after such a short, but so intense a pontificate as to leave immense emotion in the world. And here you have the new Pope, who is particularly happy to receive today this great array of representatives from Italian Industry, qualified and well-known all over the world. I greet you all heartily and thank you for the joy your visit gives me. 2. As you know, I, too, have been a worker: for a short period of my life, during the last world conflict I, too, had direct experience of factory work. I know, therefore, what the commitment of daily toil in the employment of others means. I know how heavy and monotonous it is; I know the needs of the workers and their just demands and legitimate aspirations. And I know how necessary it is that work should never be alienating and frustrating, but should always correspond to man's superior spiritual dignity. 3. -

Papal Transitions
Backgrounder Papal Transition 2013 prepared by Office of Media Relations United States Conference of Catholic Bishops 3211 Fourth Street NE ∙ Washington, DC 20017 202-541-3200 ∙ 202-541-3173 fax ∙ www.usccb.org/comm Papal Transitions Does the Church have a formal name for the transition period from one pope to another? Yes, in fact, this period is referred to by two names. Sede vacante, in the Church’s official Latin, is translated "vacant see," meaning that the see (or diocese) of Rome is without a bishop. In the 20th century this transition averaged just 17 days. It is also referred to as the Interregnum, a reference to the days when popes were also temporal monarchs who reigned over vast territories. This situation has almost always been created by the death of a pope, but it may also be created by resignation. When were the most recent papal transitions? On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II died at the age of 84 after 26 years as pope. On April 19, 2005, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, formerly prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was elected to succeed John Paul II. He took the name Pope Benedict XVI. There were two in 1978. On August 6, 1978, Pope Paul VI died at the age of 80 after 15 years as pope. His successor, Pope John Paul I, was elected 20 days later to serve only 34 days. He died very unexpectedly on September 28, 1978, shocking the world and calling the cardinals back to Rome for the second time in as many months. -

Foundation Receives Personal Writings of Pope John Paul I
Foundation receives personal writings of Pope John Paul I (CNS) The John Paul I Vatican Foundation announced the recovery of a collection of the late pope’s writings. In a statement released by the Vatican April 28, Archbishop Francesco Moraglia of Venice said the personal archives of his predecessor, then-Cardinal Albino Luciani, are a testament to the late pontiff’s humility as “a meek and brave worker in the vineyard of the Lord.” “I hope the foundation will always undertake the work of spreading his religious and cultural heritage so that we may know better the beautiful ‘surprise’ that God wanted to reserve, one day, for his church and the world by placing Albino Luciani on the chair of St. Peter,” Archbishop Moraglia wrote. Pope John Paul I served only 33 days as pope. He died in 1978 at the age of 65, shocking the world and a church that had just mourned the death of St. Paul VI. The foundation, established in 2020 by Pope Francis, was set up to sponsor a variety of initiatives, including conventions, meetings, seminars and study sessions. It also is expected to publish research and be a point of reference throughout the world for people who wish to further their studies on Pope John Paul I. Italian journalist Stefania Falasca, a member of the foundation’s administrative board and vice postulator of the late pope’s sainthood cause, said the writings — dated from 1929 to 1978 — are a “very rich collection of diverse documentation spanning 50 years, made up of papers including handwritten pieces, notebooks, diaries, printed and photographic material and correspondence.” “The scope of these papers, which is mainly characterized as a personal file, largely includes interventions, lectures, conferences, homilies, articles and publications,” she said. -

The Broken Cross: the Hidden Hand in the Vatican Piers Compton
The Broken Cross: The Hidden Hand in the Vatican Piers Compton Part One What remains when Rome perishes? When Rome falls – the world. Virgil Byron. Its claims were monstrous. They passed beyond human reckoning. For it claimed to be the one divine and authoritative voice on earth; and it taught, gave judgment, and asserted, always in the same valid tone, confident that its message would outlive the transitory phenomena of doubt, change, and contradiction. It stood secure, an edifice of truth behind the ramparts of truth which defied the many and various attacks launched by its enemies. For it claimed a strength that was not of itself, a life-force and vigour imparted by a power that could not be found elsewhere; and because it could not be likened to any earthly thing it provoked fear, bewilderment, mockery, even hate. But through the centuries it never wavered; never abandoned one item of its stupendous inheritance; never allowed the smallest rent to appear in its much derided mantle of intolerance. It inspired devotion and admiration even in those who scorned its mental discipline. It rose above conjecture, likelihood, probability; for the Word by which it had been founded was also its guarantee of permanence. It provided the one answer to the immemorial question – what is truth? One of our essayists told1, as many of our schoolboys used to know, of its place in history; how it saw the beginning, as it was likely to see the end, of our worldly systems; and how, in time to come, a broken arch of London Bridge might furnish a foothold from which a traveller ‘could sketch the ruins of St. -
