A Review of Avery Dulles Models of Revelation
A Book Review of Avery Dulles, S. J.’s Models of Revelation Reviewed by David J Keys, PhD About the Fr. Dulles: Avery Dulles, S. J. is one of the most noted American Catholic Theologians of the past century. Avery Dulles converted to Catholicism from Presbyterianism in 1940. Subsequently, he entered the seminary and was ordained into the priesthood in 1956. He received a second doctorate, this one in theology at the Gregorian University in Rome in 1960. At the time of writing this book (1985), Fr. Dulles was a Professor of Systematic Theology at Catholic University (1974-1988). He is currently the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University. Fr. Dulles is the author of over 700 articles and 22 books. Fr. Dulles also is a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America and has served on numerous Commissions, Committees, and Councils throughout his career. In 2001, Fr. Dulles was named a Cardinal of the Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II. Introduction In 1960, Fr. Dulles began teaching courses in revelation. His teaching centered on “the possibility of revelation and its factual occurrence”.1 In essence, he taught an Apologetics course. As time went on, he became much more interested in two primary questions; “What revelation is and how is it communicated?”.2 In a previous book, Models of the Church, Fr. Dulles had seen the relative advantage of modelling the theological description of “Church”. The purpose of this book is to similarly model the theological descriptions of revelation in order to gain insight through methodology. -

Resolutions to Censure the President: Procedure and History Updated February 1, 2021 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R45087 Resolutions to Censure the President: Procedure and History Summary Censure is a reprimand adopted by one or both chambers of Congress against a Member of Congress, President, federal judge, or other government official. While Member censure is a disciplinary measure that is sanctioned by the Constitution (Article 1, Section 5), non-Member censure is not. Rather, it is a formal expression or “sense of” one or both houses of Congress. Censure resolutions targeting non-Members have utilized a range of statements to highlight conduct deemed by the resolutions’ sponsors to be inappropriate or unauthorized. Before the Nixon Administration, such resolutions included variations of the words or phrases unconstitutional, usurpation, reproof, and abuse of power. Beginning in 1972, the most clearly “censorious” resolutions have contained the word censure in the text. Resolutions attempting to censure the President are usually simple resolutions. These resolutions are not privileged for consideration in the House or Senate. They are, instead, considered under the regular parliamentary mechanisms used to process “sense of” legislation. Since 1800, Members of the House and Senate have introduced resolutions of censure against at least 12 sitting Presidents. Two additional Presidents received criticism via alternative means (a House committee report and an amendment to a resolution). The clearest instance of a successful presidential censure is Andrew Jackson. The Senate approved a resolution of censure in 1834. On three other occasions, critical resolutions were adopted, but their final language, as amended, obscured the original intention to censure the President. -
Models of the Church and Parish Model
Models of the Church and Parish Model by Msgr. John S. Mbinda The Models of the Church by Avery Cardinal Dulles was first published in 1976, revised in 1987 and again in 2002. This book is a considered a classic on ecclesiology (study of church) that describes the traditional local community Christian church mission. In his book, Cardinal Dulles puts forth six dimensions of active parish life. Catholic (Institution) Community (Mystical Communion) Sacrament Engage/Evangelize (Herald) Servant Disciples of Jesus (Community of Disciples/Stewards) Cardinal Avery Dulles’ understanding of the Church in terms of various models contributes a lot to our understanding of the parish. Most parishes include the one or more of the models in their mission statement in one form or another. Our Mission Statement here at St. John Apostle & Evangelist, Mililani, attempts to include all six models. The statement is outlined below to indicate how the various models are included. A close look shows that we have expanded our vision and mission statements into a value statements that underlines the Church as communion. Our Vision Statement “We strive to become a Spirit-led stewardship parish in Central Oahu”. Stewardship as a way of life is what fuels our parish community. Our Mission Statement “We are a Catholic Christian community, called to develop a deeper relationship with Christ. Such a relationship is fostered through active participation in: Word, Sacrament, Renewal Programs, Ministry / Service and other Spirit-led activities. We dedicate our time, -

Herein, need emerges for a new, ecclesial, trinitarian, and christological paradigm to identify purposes, ends, and goods of Christian marriage. The dissertation‘s body develops the foundation and framework of this new paradigm: a Common Way in Christ. I find this paradigm by putting marriage in dialogue with an ecclesial practice already the subject of rich trinitarian, christological, ecclesial theological development: consecrated religious life. -

Christians are witnessing the advent of an emerging ecumenical paradigm, which, because it is not fully realized, is still realizing its full definition. The paradigm operates in a global context rather than a Eurocentric one, and even as it is more global, it is simultaneously more local. It cultivates shared praxis while being less concerned with the comparison of dogmas. Ecclesiology is also entering a new paradigm which shares many features with its ecumenical counterpart, particularly its global perspective and interest in shared praxis ahead of dogmatic questions. Even though ecumenism and ecclesiology share common trajectories, their journeys are unfolding in largely parallel rather than cooperative and mutually-enriching ways. This raises the question: What opportunities might arise from examining the shifts in ecumenism and ecclesiology together? This article examines how new methodological and practical developments in these two fields can form and inform one another. It studies the shift to synodality in the Catholic Church and the turn towards discernment in the ecumenical sphere as manifestations of similar theological commitments and a common interest in cultivating participatory processes. The seismic changes reshaping the religious landscape are transforming the relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology; yet a strong connection between them endures and illumines paths forward for the church in the third millennium. -

P. 2 “God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, has made even us, who were dead through our sins, alive together with Christ. .and he has raised us up with him in Christ Jesus and given us a place with him in the heavens” (Eph. 2:4–6). Christian existence means being with Christ, and thus means being where he is, sitting at the right hand of the Father. The Church has her homeland where Christ is. In terms of her head and of her goal, she is a heavenly Church. Since she is an earthly Church, she knows that she is a pilgrim Church, stretching out to reach her goal. The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Church,Lumen Gentium, contemplated the Church as the people of God. If one reads this great conciliar text as a whole, it is clear that the Council sees the Church as the people of God entirely on the basis of her goal, to be the heavenly, perfected Church (Lumen Gentium, 2). It is only the goal that gives meaning to the path. The Church is the pilgrim people of God, and her goal is the heavenly Jerusalem. It is only when we contemplate the Church in her earthly-heavenly transi- tional existence that we have the whole Church in view. This is why we begin by presenting some witnesses for this way of seeing the Church; then we ask why the sensitivity to this perspective has been largely lost today, and above all why the heavenly dimension of the Church is often forgotten; finally, we should like to indicate some perspectives on how it is possible to regain this vision of the Church as heavenly-earthly reality. -

Kenotic Ecclesiology: Context, Orientations, Secularity THOMAS HUGHSON, S.J. Four communicative disjunctions are ways in which, “the Catholic Church today is … out of phase with the world it wants to speak to.”1 Unless and until the influence of Pope Francis permeates the Church at all levels and in all contexts his charismatic leadership cannot be said to have changed this condition altogether. He surely has set a direction away from the clerical culture among bishops that abetted sweeping clergy abuse of minors under a rug of silent re-assignments. Even the Church now represented in the deeds and words of Francis cannot by-pass coming to grips with the disjunctions and with abuse. So George McLean’s theological response to the disjunctions and crisis of abuse remains a valid, long-term project. He advises nothing less than, “… rethinking the entire nature of the Church and its public presence in quite different, indeed kenotic, terms.” 2 That is a tall theological order. 3 What does a theological project of that scope involve? Outlining some directions along which to think about a kenotic theology of the Church draws on more than theological reflection and research. -

The paper critically discusses the fascination that Ibn Rushd has exercised on several thinkers, from Ernest Renan to Salman Rushdie, and highlights the problem of literalism in Qur’anic interpretation. Based on Ibn Rushd’s Decisive Treatise (Fasl al-maqāl), the paper investigates Ibn Rushd’s proposed division of (Muslim) society into three distinct classes. The main question here is whether there is a substantial link between the people of the Muslim community, given the three distinct kinds of assent (tasdīq) introduced by Ibn Rushd. I argue that if such a link cannot be supplied, then it is hard to see in Ibn Rushd an enlightened social model for today’s Muslim societies. Furthermore, that the great majority of people are prevented from having any contact with non-literal interpretation of the Scripture and non-revealed ways of thinking.
