For example, the majority of the medical and scientific community agrees that condoms and other safe-sex practices are the key to reducing the number of HIV transmissions, while the Catholic Church and her ranking officials claim that abstinence and monogamy are the only moral solutions. This Thesis examines the policies of the Church, including her dedication to the protection of the sanctity of human life, in an attempt to determine if the Church’s words are shaping HIV/AIDS prevention and if there is an opening for a reprioritization on her stance on condoms without abandoning her principles. To reduce HIV/AIDS from its pandemic status, science must work in two directions. While the work to find a cure is critical, the fewer new infections there are, the quicker the virus will be eradicated. Thus, prevention is also vital to the end of HIV/AIDS. More importantly, tools of behavioral prevention (such as condoms), are currently much more publicly accessible than methods of chemical prevention (such as vaccination). Thus, while the scientific community is working diligently towards more effective treatments and medications for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS, the behavioral prevention aspect must continue to be taken up by the United States and others just as persistently. Indeed, the implementation of public prevention efforts is essentially the only measure that presently greatly reduces the number of new infections (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006). Without these efforts, the crisis of the HIV/AIDS virus is unlikely to be assuaged by any substantial degree in the United States, the region that will be the focus of this Thesis. Prevention further establishes itself as worthy of public focus when two other factors are taken into consideration. Firstly, medical breakthroughs are relatively few and far between - only recently was the first person announced cured of HIV (an infant born HIV-positive that was given antiretroviral therapy from the moment of birth) (Guinan, 2013), and individuals being cured of either 1 HIV or AIDS cannot be considered as a dependable solution at this juncture. While current medicines can provide HIV/AIDS patients with a much longer life than what was once expected, they will still suffer from the symptoms and risks of the virus (Leland, 2013). Secondly, most behavioral prevention measures (hereinafter referred to as prevention measures because they are the only ones currently available) are exceedingly easy to implement because they are physically simple and relatively

Instead, he expresses a broader understanding of the beauty and complexity of nature, on which humans fundamentally depend. GIANFRANCO RAVASI ​ ​ ​ Preamble Let us begin from a spiritual account drawn from Tibetan Buddhism, a different world from that of the encyclical, but significant nonetheless. A man walks alone on a desert track that dissolves into the distance on the horizon. He suddenly realises that there is another being, difficult to make out, on the same path. It may be a beast that inhabits these deserted spaces; the traveller’s heart beats faster and faster out of fear, as the wilderness does not offer any shelter or help, so he must continue to walk. As he advances, he discerns the profile: a man’s. However, fear does not leave him; in fact, that man could be a fierce bandit. He has no choice but to go on, as the fear of an assault grips his soul. The traveller no longer has the courage to look up. He can hear the other man’s steps approaching. The two men are now face to face: he looks up and stares at the person before him. In his surprise he cries out: “This is my brother whom I haven’t seen for many years!” We wish to refer to this ancient parable from a different religion and culture at the beginning of this presentation to show that the yearning pervading Pope Francis’s new encyclical Fratelli tutti is an essential component of the spiritual breadth of all ​ humanity. A new order, a new humanity, a new faith Cardinal Godfried Danneels "Something is coming, and you can awaken it in yourself, by joining together with millions of other people gathered in a kind of new "host of saints", which through its power and its inner creativity has at its disposal such a propelling force that it can shock the entire world" (excerpt from the booklet "Global cooperation for a better World"). In the opinion of New Age, we are now on the threshold of unusual events. Around the year 2000 the Sun will enter the new constellation of Aquarius, and unexpectedly the speed of the universe and of history will be changed. The empire and religion of Mesopotamia was the age of the constellation of Aries, and the current constellation of Pisces is the age of the Christian religion. The age of Aquarius will bring a new world order, a new humanity, and a new religion. This is the premise which, in an abbreviated and objective way, answers the question: What is New Age. The author, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, Primate of Belgium, vividly compares New Age with Christianity. A "religion" that wants to encompass the world The searches of many people are already aimed not only at traditional sects, which narrow the horizons of human thought, but also at something open, something that expands these horizons. The former world will thus reach its boundary, and traditional religions will no longer manage to change anything. Let us search for something even bigger, something wider. Let us try and find something universal.

In the interval between the appointment of the Birth Control Commission by Pope Paul VI in 1964 and the release of Humanae Vitae in July of 1968, my father and I engaged in joyous debate. Though we both completely agreed that the promised encyclical would again define the constant teaching of the Church opposing all forms of artificial birth control, my father insisted that since His Holiness would speak from the Chair of Peter, the encyclical would be ex cathedra. I, on the other hand, contended it would be reiteration of authentic magisterial teaching, thus binding doctrine even though not "infallible" in the strict sense of Vatican 1. Little did we realize our intense debate would become inelevant to vast numbers of Catholics worldwide. Theologians, pliests, laity and even some bishops pridefully rose in dissent from the official and unchanging magisterial tradition. Decades of "cafeteria Catholicism" were off to a running start! I trust this paper will demonstrate whether Pope Paul VI was speaking ex cathedra or restating magisterial truth. Humanae Vitae must be recognized as binding to the properly formed conscience.
