Y ROSTAGNO C. Resumen. Se presenta información sobre el trabajo de restauración del bosque nativo realizado en el Parque Natural Municipal Barranca de la Quinta Los Ombúes, desde 2009 a la fecha. Este predio de una hectárea sufrió diferentes modificaciones hasta que comenzaron los trabajos de restauración de biodiversidad a partir de la creación del área protegida. Se prohibió el corte de pasto, se controlaron varias especies exóticas y se plantaron especies nativas. -

Br., induced by salinity stress, as well as photosynthetic and stomatal response to salinity. were investigated. As salinity increased, decreases were observed in rool diameter and leaf size, as well as in the number of chloroplasts in the chlorenchyma and bundle sheath cells. Development of these two cell types was also inhibited. Net leaf photosynthetic rate and leaf stomatal conductance decreased with increasing salinity, while the interceJlular CO 2 concentration increased. 80th stomatal closure and inhibition of biochemical processes probably caused the reduced leaf photosynthetic rates. The stomatal indices suggest that the trend towards an increase in number of stomata per unit leaf area with an increase in salinity was not due to decreased epidermal cell size. FORAOE PLANTS FOR ( FLTIYATION ON ALKALI SOILS. By JARED G. SMITH, Assistant Agrostologist. INTRODUCTION. When the excess of alkali in a soil rises to such a sum total that the cereals can not be grown, the best use to which the land can be put is the growth of forage. There is no crop, so far as known, which can be profitably grown on land that contains over 2 per cent of the combined alkalies within the first 2 inches of surface soil. Soils containing as much as 1 per cent of alkalies within the first 2 inches will not grow cereals, and the maximum for trees, vines, and root crops is much lower. There are extensive areas in the West which are thus excluded from the cate- gory of farming lands because of the excess of alkalies. Such lands are not necessarily barren, although they can not be profitably culti- vated. They are often covered by a rank growth of vegetation, indi- cating that there is an abundance of plant food in the soil, if only the plants are so tolerant of alkali as to be able to secure it. Many of the alkaii plants have considerable value as forage, and of these some few show special adaptation to the changed conditions which cultiva- tion brings. The crops which originated in humid regions will not grow on soils which are strongly impregnated with the alkalies, and so to meet the conditions one must either take the useful plants of the alkali regions of his own country or depend upon those which have been introduced from similar regions elsewhere. -

The phylogeny of a phylogenetically poorly known family, Phytolaccaceae sensu lato (s.l.), was constructed for resolving conflicts concerning taxonomic delimitations. Cladistic analyses were made based on 44 sequences of the internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal DNA from 11 families (Aizoaceae, Basellaceae, Didiereaceae, Molluginaceae, Nyctaginaceae, Phytolaccaceae s.l., Polygonaceae, Portulacaceae, Sarcobataceae, Tamaricaceae, and Nepenthaceae) of the order Caryophyllales. The maximum parsimony tree from the analysis resolved a monophyletic group of the order Caryophyllales; however, the members, Agdestis, Anisomeria, Gallesia, Gisekia, Hilleria, Ledenbergia, Microtea, Monococcus, Petiveria, Phytolacca, Rivinia, Genetics and Molecular Research 12 (4): 4515-4525 (2013) ©FUNPEC-RP www.funpecrp.com.br J. Effects of Leaf and Berry Extracts of Phytolacca Dioica L. on Haematological and Weight Parameters of Wistar Rats

Accepted 25 January, 2011 The effect of aqueous leaf and berry extracts of Phytolacca dioica administered at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight for 14 days was investigated on haematology and weight parameters of Wistar rats. The extracts at all doses had no significant effect on the red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (HB), parked cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) when compared with the animals in the control group. In contrast, the extracts at all doses caused a progressive significant reduction in the serum levels of platelets, white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils and monocytes. Also, there was dose- dependent significant increase in the serum levels of lymphocytes and a reduction in the level of eosinophils. Administration of the extracts at all doses investigated led to a significant reduction in the body weight, absolute organ weight and organ-body weight ratio. These observable alterations in some parameters were indications that the leaf and berry extracts of P.
