Y ROSTAGNO C. Resumen. Se presenta información sobre el trabajo de restauración del bosque nativo realizado en el Parque Natural Municipal Barranca de la Quinta Los Ombúes, desde 2009 a la fecha. Este predio de una hectárea sufrió diferentes modificaciones hasta que comenzaron los trabajos de restauración de biodiversidad a partir de la creación del área protegida. Se prohibió el corte de pasto, se controlaron varias especies exóticas y se plantaron especies nativas. -

The phylogeny of a phylogenetically poorly known family, Phytolaccaceae sensu lato (s.l.), was constructed for resolving conflicts concerning taxonomic delimitations. Cladistic analyses were made based on 44 sequences of the internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal DNA from 11 families (Aizoaceae, Basellaceae, Didiereaceae, Molluginaceae, Nyctaginaceae, Phytolaccaceae s.l., Polygonaceae, Portulacaceae, Sarcobataceae, Tamaricaceae, and Nepenthaceae) of the order Caryophyllales. The maximum parsimony tree from the analysis resolved a monophyletic group of the order Caryophyllales; however, the members, Agdestis, Anisomeria, Gallesia, Gisekia, Hilleria, Ledenbergia, Microtea, Monococcus, Petiveria, Phytolacca, Rivinia, Genetics and Molecular Research 12 (4): 4515-4525 (2013) ©FUNPEC-RP www.funpecrp.com.br J. Accepted 25 January, 2011 The effect of aqueous leaf and berry extracts of Phytolacca dioica administered at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight for 14 days was investigated on haematology and weight parameters of Wistar rats. The extracts at all doses had no significant effect on the red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (HB), parked cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) when compared with the animals in the control group. In contrast, the extracts at all doses caused a progressive significant reduction in the serum levels of platelets, white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils and monocytes. Also, there was dose- dependent significant increase in the serum levels of lymphocytes and a reduction in the level of eosinophils. Administration of the extracts at all doses investigated led to a significant reduction in the body weight, absolute organ weight and organ-body weight ratio. These observable alterations in some parameters were indications that the leaf and berry extracts of P. -

INVENTORY OP FOREIGN SEEDS AND PLANTS. LNTRODUCTOKY STATEMENT. The present inventory consists almost entirely of a continuation of the list of garden vegetables, fruits, forage plants, and ornamentals secured by Mr. Walter T. Swingle, Agricultural Explorer of this Depart- ment, in France, Italy, and Algeria. These represent a careful selec- tion of the newer and more promising varieties and species recently introduced into cultivation, which seemed worthy of being tested in the United States. An extensive series of varieties of the European grape, which would come numerically in this inventory, is to be issued separately. Cuttings are not available for general distribution, having been imported in quantities sufficient only to permit tests which are being made in cooperation with the Division of Pomology at various points in the South Atlantic States, Louisiana, and Kansas. An impor- tation of ten tons of seed rice, secured by Prof. S. A. Knapp from the island of Kiushu, Japan, appears under No. 19G2, but the fruit trees and ornamentals obtained by him arrived much later, and an inventory of them will be published hereafter. There are also some varieties of interest, particularly for the subtropical parts of the country and the newer insular possessions, sent from the West Indies by the Hon. Barbour Lathrop and Mr. I). G. Fairchild, while on their way to South America. -

Sikolia ABSTRACT: Centrospermeae species were collected at different sites along gradient of altitude and aridity in the semi-arid, saline and arid habitats in western region of Kenya. δ13C values and Kranz leaf anatomy were used to examine for C3, C4 C3-C4 intermediate and Crassulacean metabolism (CAM) species photosynthesis. 13 ẟ C values and Kranz leaf anatomy were used to differentiate the C3 plant species from the C4 species. The C4, C3, C3-C4 and CAM species were confirmed to be present in the Centrospermeae group in different proportionate percentage. Interspecific species occur in the group. The morphological, anatomical, physiological and biochemical adaptive strategies of the C3, C4,C3-C4and CAM species of the Centrospermeae group are discussed. 13 KEY WORDS: Centrospermeae, C4, C3, C3-C4 species,δ C values, Kranz leaf anatomy,adaptive strategies I. INTRODUCTION There is consensus that C3 pathway evolved first and wide spread in terrestrial and aquatic species and habitats (Sikolia, Onyango, Beck and Kinyamario, 2009[1]). The C4 syndrome is phylogenetic younger achievement and apparently evolved independently in monocots and dicot perhaps as many as twenty times (Quade and Cerling, 1995[2]; Edwards, Franceschi and Voznesenskaya, 2004[3]; Edward, Furbank, Hatch and Osmond, 2001[4] [1] Sikolia, 2016[5]). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Paititi Natural Reserve is located in the southeastern part of the Tandilia mountain range (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). With the aim of recording the floristic richness of Sierra Chica, an untouched area of the reserve, all vas- cular plants were inventoried and categorized by family, status, and life form. Altogether, 364 taxa from 72 families were found, with the most predominant families being Poaceae (20.7%), Asteraceae (20.1%), and Fabaceae (5.8%). We found 95 adventive species, 4 cosmopolitan, and 265 native. The most abundant life forms were hemicryptophytes (33.1%), therophytes (30.6%), and criptophytes (22.6%); the therophytes were mostly represented by adventive spe- cies. We also found species that were known from Buenos Aires province but not from mountainous areas. Despite being a small area within Argentina, Sierra Chica constitutes a valuable refuge for native flora of the Tandilia mountain range system, which is in danger of being affected by exotic plants. -
