Minute15/177oftheCreechS.M.ParishCouncilmeetingof3 August2015includesthefollowingstatement:-

"IWexplainedthat theFITleasesignedjointlybythePCandTME in2013hadstrengthenedTMEpositionasatenant.TheClerk confirmedthatthe Solicitorhadsaiditstrengthenedtheirarguments. ThiswasdiscussedandgiventheSolicitor’spreviousadvicesand thatbothpartieshadalreadysignedtheFITagreementitwasagreed thatTMEistostayattheRecParkandbeofferedthenewlease. Act ion.IWandtheClerkaretoexaminethedraftleasewhichmay needsomefurthernegotiationwithTME."

3 IWisthepresentcouncilchairman,IanWright,andFITrefersto the'FieldsInTrust'documentsthatTMEsignedalongsidethe ParishCouncilover2yearsagowhentherecreationfieldwas renamedtheQueenElizabethIIRecreationParkandbroughtunder thejurisdictionoftheNationalPlayingFieldsAssociation.

WhilstwehaveyettohearfromtheCouncilitisclearthatour patienceoverthepast4yearsisbeingrewardedandthethreatof removalhasbeenlifted.Wenowawaitthetermsoftheproposed revisedleasewithinterest. News from Creech

ByMikeJohns ThankstoAndyWebbandasignificantdonationmadebyDavid SpicerwenowhaveaViceroymillingmachineintheworkshop whichiscurrentlybeingwiredinreadyforusebyAndyCookeand DonHancock.Thisisamajoradditiontoourworkshopcapacity and,aswithDavidHartland'slathe,themillwillbeavailablefor clubmembers'useeitherundersupervisionorindividuallywhen membersarejudgedcompetent.Theonegoldenruleisthatnoone shouldcarryoutanyactivitiesatCreechwithouttherebei nga secondmemberonsite.

AlsothankstoAndyCooketheweldingbenchnowhasitssteeltop inplacewhichgivesusamuchbetterworksurfaceforfabricating track,etc.Thiswillberequiredshortlywhensomefurthertrack panelsaremadeuptoformtherevisedtrackstotheshedtoimprove operationalflexibilityandtakeaccountoftheadditionalinternal storagecreatedby theextradoorwhichhasbeencompleted.Atthe momentDavidHartlandisbuildinganewpointintoanexisting trackasstepone increatingabetteryardlayout.

4 TonyGoslinghastakentheleadinupgradingtheballastboardswith whateverhelpisavailableonThursdaytoinstalltheboard sand improvetheballastingofthetrackasrequired.Whilstmostofthe longstraighttrackthroughthetreeshasbeendoneth ereisstill muchtodoandTonycanalwaysusemorehelp.TimGriffiths, MikePinkneyandanumberofournewermembersarekee pingthe needsforoutdoormaintenanceundercontrol,checkingand adjustingpointcontrols,weedingthetrackandgeneralgrass cutting.

Threeweeksagowesufferedsome vandalismonsitewhenthepavilion wasalsodamaged.Inourcasethe pointleversonseveralpointswere damagedbutthankstoTim Griffithstheseweremendedand newsleepersinstalledintimefor thenextrunningday.Someweeks earlieratrackjointwasdisplaced andthenputbacksuchthattherail misalignmentwasnotobvious.Tim Himscarriedouttheregularpre - servicetrackinspectionthe followingrunningdaywhenhis locomotive`Dianthus'wasderailed andturnedonitsside.Fortunately Timwasnothurtbuttheincident Thenewpointswith7.25” demonstratedjusthowcarefulwe gaugeonlyintothecarriage havetobebeforeopening the shed. railwaytothepublic.

Runningdaysarestillgaininginpopularityandwehavebeen enjoyingthecompanyofsome150pass engersmostSundayseven whentheweatherhasnotbeensogood.Wetendtogetasteady trickleofridersthroughouttheafternoonratherthanqueuesand

5 oftenfindthelastonesturnupjustaswestartpackingup.This emphasisestheneedtohavesufficientclubmembersonhandnot onlytolookafterourcustomersbutalsotohelpgettingthingsready andclearingupwhenthepublicisnotaroundsohowaboutcoming alongandgivingtheregularsabreaksometimes?Itwillbe appreciated-thankyou.

Report from Vivary Park

Onthewhole,thefineweatherhascontinuedtobringinthe customersthroughoutthesummer -withtheexceptionoftheFlower Show,whenitrainedonbothSaturdayandSunday.Unfortunately, theFlowerShowmanagementsawfittomakeitalmostimpossible togainaccesstotherailway,untilPhilaskedtheannouncerto broadcastthefactthatwewererunning,whentheywereoblige dto makea(wellguarded)smallgapinthedefences.Theadditional runningdayonSundaywassowetthatnorunningwaspossib le. (WemisseditaswewerebusygettingdrownedattheWSRNorton Fitzwarrensteamrallyforthefourthyearrunning!)

MoremembershavebeenturningupattheTuesdayevening runnings,whichhavegivenlearnerdriversthechancetopractice withoutany hassleandownersofnewlocosthechancetotrythem out.Theseeveningshavebeenverypleasant,withmorewivesand partners comingtojoininthechat,soifyouhaven'tbeenbefore, makesureyoucomeandjoinusnextyear.

SomeoftheVivaryregula rshavebeenhelpingJohnPickeringto runtheportabletrack.Thisisunbelievablyhardworkforpeopleof matureyears(oradvancedoldage,tobemorecorrect!),soalittle

6 helpfromsomeyounger, fittermemberswouldbe mostwelcome.Philand VikiMortimerranitfor manyyearsandwhen theywereobligedtostop therewasagapofquite sometimebeforeJohn volunteeredtotakeiton. Theworstpartisthe assemblingand dismantlingthetrack. BobRichardsandhisSweetPea Thetraileriswell atTheDalwoodCountryFair. designedbutthetrack sectionsareheavyandthetrolleyisbothexceedinglyheavyand cumbersome.Allhavetobemovedseveraltimeseachtrip.

ThisSeptembertheBreanSteamersturneduponthedayexpected (unlikelastyearwhentheycamethefollowingweek).Therainheld offanditwasgoodtomeetupwitholdfriendsagainwithagood welcomingcrowdfromtheVivaryteamandbetweenthemall,they demolishedfourdozenrockcakes!

AlsoinSeptember,wehadtheannualvisitfromtheWellingPre - schooltoddlers,whoenjoyedtheirridesnearlyasmuchasthe teachers!Asithappened therewerelotsofchildreninthepark, includingtwootherpre -schools -allwantingridesand,ofcourse, wecouldn'tdisappointthemsowerekeptbusyallmorning.

Astheseasonfinishes,withonlytheSantaSpecialtolookforward tothisyear,our thanksgototheguyswhoarriveearlytosetupthe trackeverytime,toBarneyforkeepingeveryonerefreshedwithtea andcoffeeandalsotoMel,whohelpsoutinanywaythat'sneeded

7 DAVIDEATON 1947 -2015

Onceagainitisasadtasktoannounceinthesepagesthepassing ofanotherstalwartclubmember.Dav idwasnotabletoattend manymeetingsinlatteryearsbutwasadrivingforceinTaunton ModelEngineersafewyearsago.

InthosedaystherailwayinVivaryParkraneverySunday throughthesummermonthsandDavid,togetherwithhiswife Beryl,aone-timechairman,secretary,vice -chairmanetc,who passedawayafewyearsago,werethereoneveryoccasion.

Iwellrememberbei ngencouragedbyDavidwhenIfirstbecame amemberinthemideightiesandifIhadaproblemhewas alwaysthefirstpersonI contacted.Hehadanextensive engineeringknowledgeandwasalwayswillingtosharethiswith anyone.Membersmayrecallhisprowessatthevariousquiz eveningswehaveenjoyedovertheyears.

8 How I became a model engineer

Aswehavesomenewmemberswho,bytheirownwords,are beginnersinthehobbyIthoughtthesefewwordsmaybehelpful.

Asa childIwatchedmyfatherasherebuilttheengineofhisold car,a1936StandardLittleNine.Thevehiclewassooldthatspar es werebecomingverydifficulttogetholdofsomanyhadtobemade. IwellrememberhismottowhenIapproachedhimwith(tome)a technicalproblem -"whatdoyoumean,itwon'tcomeapart,itwas puttogetherwasn'tit?Ofcourseitwillcomeapart".Inthaterathis wasatruestatement,unliketodaywithfactorysealedcomponents whichmayonlybedismantledbywreckingthem .

MyfirstintroductiontoalathewasduringschoolholidayswhenI earnedafewbobbypaintingacoupleofthemin"corporat e colours"atthesmallfactorywherefatherwasworksmanager.I rememberarowofwomenworkingflypresses,allonpiecework, whattheywereproducingstillremainsamysterytome.So progressedmyearlyyearsuntilIleftschool,fathersuggestedI becameanapprenticetoolmaker,motherwantedmetoworkinan officeandcomehomewithcleanhandsandclothes.Idefiedbothof thembyobtainingapostasanapprenticecompositorintheprinting trade,alinenowlongdefunct.Cuttingalongstoryshort,one'searly yearsinemploymentarefroughtwithmanythings,motorcycles, cars,etcandofcoursetheattractionoftheoppositesex.Thisleftno roomforthoughtsofmodelengineeringoranythingremotely similar.

Itwasnotuntilmanyyearslater, andseveralchangesofemployer, thatIbecameinterestedinsteam. 9 Mygirlfriend,latermywife,draggedmetoalocalsteamrally, whichparticularoneitwasislostinthemistsoftime.Ibec ame interestedinthemotionofanopenwiththeconrodand rodmovingmajesticallybackwardsandforwards.Imust havespokenaboutthisatworkthefollowingweekasacolleague showedmeaStuartTurnercatalogue.Ifellinlovewiththeir Number8horizontalengine,anopencrankenginesomenineinches orsoinlength.IdismissedtheideaofbuildingitasIhad noskills inthisareaanddidnotpossessalathe.Itisstrangehowthingsturn out.Anothercolleaguesaidhehadanoldlat hewhichhewantedto getridof.IsaidIwouldlikeit.An"oldlathe"turnedouttobe somewhatofanunderstatement.Itwas treadleoperated,thecrank forthetreadlerattledinitshousingsandthe3jawchuckwasalmost seizedup.Therewasnoprovisionforaleadscrew,thecrossslide beingclampedtotheflatbedandtherewasnoholethroughthe mandrel,onlyadeadcent reattheback.AnywayImotoriseditwith anoldmotorIhadinstore.Thisarrangementworked,though accuracywasoutofthe question,aswasanythingbutthesmallest ofcuts

Iwasalotyoungerandalotlesscrotchetyinthosedayssoreadily agree dtoaccompanymyotherhalftotheTauntonFlowerShow(I couldthenasnowbarelytellthedifferencebetweengrassand tomatoplants),beingalittleboredIfoundmyselfleaningonthe fenceneartherailwayatVivarywatchingthetrainsgoingro und. SuddenlyIheardavoicefrom"shewhomustbeobeyed"saying "givethismanafiver",Ithought"ohdear,whatanearthhasshe boughtnow"butbeingadutifulpersonIdidasIwastold.Shethen said"youarenowamemberofTauntonModelEngineers ".

Wow,whatdoIdonow -Ihadnoengineeringexperienceorskills, savethatIcouldkeepanoldcargoingandIcouldarc weld.Iwent alongtomyfirstmeeting,wasmadewelcomeandgiventhe suggestiontogotothelocaltechwheretherewasagoodmodel

10 engineeringclassbutIwouldneedaprojectonwhichtolearn.So backtotheStuartNo8idea.Asetofcastingsandmaterials was dulypurchased,Irememberfortheprincelysumofaround£26.On examiningthedrawingsIhadashock-whatonearthdidthings mean?Whatthehellisapcd?Ohdear,Ihavewastedmymoney.

TauntonModelEngineersinthosedayshadfewerthanfort y membersandhadonlybeenestablishedinVivaryParkforsixyears. Meetingarrangementswerethesameasnow,withtwomeetin gsper month.TherailwayatVivarythenraneveryweekend,3.5inch gaugewascommonwith5inchgaugebeingbig.Howthingshave changedinthemeantime!

NotbeingonetogiveupsoeasilyIwentalongandjoinedthe sessionsatthetech.ThetutoraskedifIknewhowtousealathe.I hesitatedandinformedhimthatIhadneverusedonelikethosein theworkshop(mostlyColchester1800s)whichseemedenormous.I optedforasteelbarinsteadofstartingmyproject.Thetutorsaid "faceitoffandcentr edrillit"(thisisaboutallIknewhowtodo). Havingdonethathethensaid"nowtakeaquarterinchoffthe diameter""what ",Isaid,"inonecut?"Thereplywas"yes,of course,Iwanttoseetheswarfcomingoffblue".

Againcuttingalongstorysh ort,theNo8wasfinished,withmuch help.Itwasabitstiffbutwithadecentairsupplyitranwell enough.Bycoincidencea clubmeetingneartheendofthebuild was“WorkinProgress”soItookitalonginacardboardbox.When Isawwhatwasondis playIhiditunderatableasIfeltthatthe itemstherewerefarbeyondmycapabilityandthatmyhumble enginewouldbeafi gureoffun.Nothingcouldhavebeenfarther fromthetruth.MyarmwastwistedtogettheNo8outandmembers showedkeeninte rest,offeringmuchadvice.Unfortunatelymostof thosemembersarenownolongerwithusbutthat'slife...

11 AftertheNumber8cameabeamengine,twomorestationary enginesandthreetractionenginesinvarioussizesandIhavenever lookedback.ThefirstoldlathehasgonetoamuseumandIamnow asmall3.5inchlathe,threeMyfords,twoHarrisonsandthre e millingmachineslateroninthehobby.Whatawonderfulhobby modelengineeringis!Ihavenowstartedaratherlargenarrow gaugerailwayenginein7.25”inchgauge,muchtotheamusement ofsomemembersasIalwayspretendedtoshunallthingsrailway !

WhatIameternallygratefulforarethetechcourseswhichI attendedandlearnedsuchagreatdeal,nowunfortunatelynolo nger availableasfarasIamaware.Partlybecauseofthiswehave installedsomemachineryinourclubfacilityandhopeinfu tureto offersomebasicinstructiontothosewhorequireit.AlsoIcannot stressenoughtheadvantageofbeingamemberofaclubwherelike- mindedpeoplecanofferadviceandswapideas.Afterbeinga memberforalmost30yearsIcanrecommendit!

Boiler Fitting Failure

Members'attentionisdrawntothedetailsofthefailureofasafety valveonalocomotivewhilstbeingusedinpublicserviceatanother MEclub.Thisfailureoccurredshortlyaftertheboilerhadbeen examinedandtestedbyanaccreditedinspectorwhohadpasseditas fitforservice.Whileworkingatraintherewasasuddenreleaseof boilersteamwhenoneofthetwosafetybrokeimmediately belowitsmountingflangeleavingitslowerendscrewedinthe boiler.Fortunatelynoonewashurtbyvalvedebrisorthehotsteam.

Havingmadetheboilersafethesecondsafetyvalvewasremoved

12 forinspectionandsubsequentlysectionedtoexamineits construction,bothvalveshavingbeenpurchasedasaset commercially.Theaccompanyingpictureshowswhatwasfound. Thewidestsectionisthehexagonalflangewhichprovidesthe meansbywhichthe valvemaybetightenedinaboiler.

Pointstonotearethethinsectionofmaterialaroundthevalve betweenthelowerscrewth readwhichis½”x26tpiandthe adjacenthexagonflange. Theexternaldiameteris wastedslightlyand measures0.495"withan internaldiameterof0.380" givingawallthicknessof 0.0575"whichoughttobe adequate.Thereisavery smallradiusinthe lower corneroftheflangecreating apossiblestressraiser dependinghowtightlythe safetyvalveisscrewedinto Thesectionedvalve. theboiler.Acheckfittingof anothersimilarvalve showedthattighteningintoplacewithan8"spannerwassufficient toinitiateahair -linecrack.

Clearlyifusingthistypeofsafetyvalvecareisneededtoavoidover tightening.Itwouldbeprudenttocarefull yexaminethebodybelow theflangeforanysignsofcrackingwheneverthevalve(s)are removedfromaboilerandbepreparedto renewthematthe slightestsignofacrack.Thisisparticularlynecessaryifitisregular practicetoremoveasafetyvalve inordertofilltheboilerwith waterwhenthefrequentremovalandrefittingcanstrainthevalve bodyandalsoleadtothread wearandasloppyfit.

13 Whenmakingsafetyvalveseverycareshouldbetakentoavoidvery thinsectionsinstressedareasifatallpossibleandagainensurethat they'renotovertightenedwheninstalled.Valvebodiesshould,of course,bemadeofphosphorbronzeorgunmetal - notbrassinany circumstances.

SOME THOUGHTS ON MAKING A SLITTING SAW LAST LONGER

Withtheriskof"teachingGrandmatosuckeggs"Ipassonthe following:

MuchtomyfrustrationIhave hadtwoslittingsawbladesbreak inanidenticalmanneraftervery littleuse.Irunthebladeona commerciallymadearborona substantialvertical milling machine.Thefeedonthetableis aboutrightasaretherevolutions ofthespindle.Bothbladesfailed whilstslitting steelwithflood coolantbeingapplied.

Iwonderedisittheblade,isit theblacklineisthebreak me,orwhatistheproblem? Photo1 Usinganarboronaverti cal machineIhavenoneedforthekeywayslotintheblade,thesquare cornersofwhichareanobviousstresspointandthiswa sactually thepointoffailure(seephoto1). 14 IdecidedtotakeaDremmel(adie grinderorsimilarwoulddoas well)withasmallcylindrical grindingtool(about3mm diameter)toroundoffthecorners ofthekeyslotonthenewblade (seephoto2)thusrelievingthe stresspoint.

Ihaveyettoascertainthe effectivenessofthisbutunless theroundedcorners youusethekeywayslotwhat Photo2 disadvantagecouldtherebe?

December1985sawthefourtheditionoftheinhousenewsletter published;thiswasthefirstcopytobearthetitle“OilyRag”. The magazinetitlewasthesubjectofsomedebate,theoptionsoffered wereasfollows.

15 Thefirst(nameless)newsletterappearedinFebruaryofthesame yearbutwasrecognisableasitthewell -known“torch”bad ge.

BerylEaton,thethensecretary,hadsuggestedtheclubneededa newsletter.Apparentlythecommitteeofthedaygaveamix ed responsetothesuggestion,commentssuchaswhowilleditit,and howmuchwillthiscostfromthethentreasurerwhokeptatight controlonspending.

Berylwasn’tgoingtobesoeasilyputoff;shecounteredbysaying shewouldbepleasedtotakeoftheroleofeditor,andwith advertisingfees,thepublicationcostswouldbeminimal.Sothere!

AfterBeryl,wehavebenefite dfromanumberofdifferenteditors, eachofwhomhastakenthepublicationtonewheights.Where next?AneNewsletterperhaps?

OnTuesday18thAugusttwentyonemodelengineersassembledin acountrylaneoutsideBridporttovisitBridMet,acompany specialisinginthecuttingandshapingofmetals.Thegatheringwas organisedbyRobertOldfield,andincludedmembersfromboththe WeymouthMESandTME.OurhostwasGaryHedges,the ManagingDirector.

Bridmethasbeenrunningforaroundtenyearsandhasbothlaser andwaterjetcutting.Thelaser,whichwesawinaction,is4.4kW andcapableofcuttingsteelupto20mmthick,butwesawit producingcomplexcutoutpiecesfrom16swgsteel.Theprocess wasfast,andasonemembernoted,thelasercould cutfarfaster thanwecoulddrawtheline.Thefinishedcutoutshapeswerethen foldedonacomputer -controlledfoldingmachin etoformelectronic consoles.Wewereshownthewaterjetcutter,whichcouldcutupto 200mmthicksteel,buttherecentworkinvolved45mmthicksteel, wherethecomplexshapeswerebeingproducedwithadimensional toleranceof+-0.2mm.Thismeansthattheshapesbeingproduced needlittleornomachiningaftercutting.Wetouredthewelding bayswhereamongstotheritems,aseriesofaluminiumfabrications wereunderwaytoformdogkennelsfortheArmyinAfghanistan,to bemountedinair -conditionedshippingcontainers.

ThetourfinishedintheDrawingOfficewhereayoungengineer verycompetentlydemonstratedthecomplex 3dimensional computerdesignprogrammes,wheretheoveralldesignofmachines couldbebrokendownintocomponentparts,revolv edtoproduce differentviews,cutopen,andmadetorevolveormovetomimicthe realfunction.Allthiswasdoneonthecomputerscreen. 17 Onemember,lookingdumfoundedatthecomplexrevolvingimage onthescreen,couldonlymutter‘andIamstilllearninghowto forwardanEmail!’

TheBridmetteamwerethankedbyRobertandthevisitorsfora mostinterestingevening.Theoneslightdisa ppointmentwasthatthe Companywerenotabletomakeoneoffcutitemsforthemodel engineeringmarket!

“Fire Queen”

Builtin1848andtheoldestsurvivinglocomotiveinNorthWales, ‘FireQueen’wasbuiltbyAlfredHorlock’s,marineengineerin g companyontheThames,tohaulslatewagonsfromthequarriesat LlanberisdowntothetopoftheinclineabovePortDinorwic (Felinheli).Thewagonswerethenlowereddownasteepinclineto theport,fromwheretheywereshippedallovertheworld. SlatesforuseinGreatBritaincouldalsobetransportedbythe mainlinerailwayfrom1850onwards.

Theengineranon4ftgauge track,andisbuiltwithoutanyframes, alltheimportantpartsbeingbolteddirectlytotheboiler.Itlooks morelikeatrac tionenginethanarailwayengine.Coalandwater werecarriedinatenderwhichisastandardgaugetenderadapted forthe4ft gauge.Alongwithitssisterenginenamed‘JennyLind’, (afamousoperasingerofthetime),itwasinservicefrom1848 until1882whenmoremodernenginestookoveritsduties.

18 ‘JennyLind’wasscrapped,butoneofthequarryowner’sdaughters wantedtostartasmallmuseum,so‘FireQueen’wasputina small

“FireQueen” engine -shedinLlanberis.Itwaslookedaftertherebythequarry apprenticesformanyyears,butasthequarry’sfortunes dwindledit didnotgetverymuchattention.

In1963anAmericanmuseumwantedtobuy‘FireQueen’,butMr TomRolt,founderoftheTalyllynRailwayPreservationSociety, persuadedSirJohnSmith,theM.P.forMerionethatthetime,tobuy theenginebec auseofitshistoricalimportance.Thishedid,butit stilllayinitslittleengineshedinLlanberis.

Whenthequarriesclosedin1969,anewhomehadtobefound.

19 FortunatelytheNationalTrust’sRailwayMuseumatPenrhynCastle wasjustbeingformed,andSirJohnSmithkindlyagreedtothe locomotivebeingputonloantotheTrust.

Whenitfirstarrivedatthecastleitwasinaverysorrystateafter almost70ye arsofneglect.SincethentheCuratorassistedbymany volunteershavelovinglyrepairedandrepaintedittobringitbackto itsformerglory.Itisnowpartofasmallbuthistoricallyimportant collectionoflocomotivesandrollingstockinthePenrhy nCastle RailwayMuseum.TheMuseumisopentovisitorsallyearround exceptChristmasDay.Whynotcomealongandseeit. IwassortingthroughsomejunkathometheotherdayandIfounda smallplasticbagofcoins.Closerexaminationrevealedthem tobe seven2ppieces;andthememorystirred….

TwentyNineyearsagotheTauntonGroupoftheGreatWestern Societywerevery muchinvolvedinbuildingthebroadgauge trackworkatDidcot,frommaterialrecoveredfromBurlescombein Devon,afewyearsearlier.Thetrackworkwasmixedgauge,with bridgerailsonlongitudinaltimbers,justexactlyasBrunelhad designedit,andby thesummerof1986thelayoutatDidcotwas almostcomplete.Meanwhile,thoughtshadturnedtoapossible locomotivetorunonthetrack.TheScienceMuseumwerebuilding areplicaIronDukeclassfromcontemporarydrawings.InMay1986 thelocomotivewa sfirststeamedandarrivedatDidcottoruntrains outfromtheTransferShed,overthemixedgaugepointworkandup therunnin gline.

20 Unfortunatelythelocomotivewasnotverygoodatstayingonthe track.Ontheopeningday,itderailedonthefacingpoint,infull viewoftheGeneralPublic.Fortunatelynonewashurt,butthe embarrassmentwasgreat.Infactthiswasnotthefirsttime ithad derailed.Thepreviousweek,afterunloadingfromastandardgauge wagon,andbeingpushedaroundacurveintheline,thetrailing wheelshadderailed.Duringlatershuntingthe8footdrivingwheels cameoff,andinalltherewerefivederailments.

IwaschargedbytheSocietywithtryingtofindoutwhatwasgoing on.Initialblamerestedonthetrack,asitsooftendoes –afterallthe professionalsattheScienceMuseumcouldhardlybeblamed.The trackwaslessthanperfect,itwastrue,but wesuspectedthatthere wassomethingwrongwiththelocomotivesprings.Wediscovered thattheyhadnotbeenmeasuredintheco nventionalway,ona locomotiveweighingtable,because(ofcourse)therewasnobroad gaugeweighingtableinexistence.Thismadeusevenmore suspicious.NodoubttheproblemswerethesameasfacedbyDaniel Goochwhenhewastryingtogettheoriginal locomotivesrunning properly –andhesufferedseveralderailmentshimselfintheearly

21 daysbeforethelocomotivesweresatisfactory.Sincethereplicahad beenbuiltfromoriginaldrawingsitwasboundtohavethe original faultsinit!

Weneededameansofcheckingthesprings –butourequipment wasprettybasic.Howcouldwedoit?Wespentsometimemulling overthequestion(andovercupsoftea).Theninconversation someonementionedputtingpenniesonthelineintheiryouthand seeingthemsquashedastrainspassedby –suddenlyanideawas born.Weallturnedoutourpocketsbutfoundonlyacoupleof pennies.Wedid,however,findseven2ppieces,andwewereoff! Wepushedthelocomotive(usingcrowbars) uptoaflatandstraight portionofthetrack,wheretherailswerepolished.Thebrakewas appliedandthensixofthetwopen nypieceswerelaidinfrontof eachwheel –twoforthedrivingwheels,twoforthetrailingwheels andtwofortheleadingwheels(thesecondsetofleadingwheels werecompensatedfromthefront,sowecouldbereasonably confidentthatthesewouldgivethesamereading).IronDukewas thenpushedforward,soastorunoverthecoins,flatteningthem. Thecoinswererecoveredan dmeasuredwithamicrometer,and comparedwiththeseventh,unmarked,coinasacontrol. Themeasurementswereasfollows:

Tounderstandthesefigures,anew2pcoinis0.074”thick, measuredovertheQueen’snose.0.073”meansaslight flatteningof hernose,whereas0.058”isalmostcompletelyobliteratingherface. Fromthesemeasurementsitwasobviousthatthespringsonthe wheelswerenotsetcorrectly.Thetwodrivingwheelswereuneven, andtherighttrailingwheelwastakingvir tuallynoload–infacton furtherexperimenting,itwaspossibletoliftthiswheelofftherail withasmallcrowbar. 22 Nowondertheenginekeptcomingoffthetrack.Therunningat Didcotwasrestrictedtorunningonthestraighttrack,andatre duced speed,forthefollowingfewweeks. TheSciencemuseumeventuallydismantledthelocomotiveand attendedtothedefects.Allthespringswereresetusingloadcells, andsomeotherdifficultiesofalignmentintheleadingaxleboxes andlackofroll andsideplayinthemainhornblockswerealso corrected.Theworkwascompleteafewweekslaterandthe locomotivewastestedonthetrack,withtheRailwayInspector present.Withthesafetyvalvelifting,IronDukewasbackedintothe TransferShedandthenrunatmaximumspeedoverthepointwork andthesharpcurves.Theimprovementsinthesuspensionwere highlyeffective –noproblemswereseenandfortherestofthat summerthetraingavemanyhundredsofpassengersanexcitingrun onBrunel’sBroad Gauge. Istillhavethelittlebagofcoins.Ikeptthempartlyoutofnostalgia forastressfulbutrewardingtimeinthatsummerof1986;butalso becausetheSocietyTreasurerwouldnotacceptthecoinsaslegal tenderandmyclaimfor14pexpenseshasneverbeenauthorised…. WegotintoLondonon25thOctoberandunloadingstartedstraight away,cranestookoffthetimbersothehatchescouldbeopen edand thenhugesuctionpipesstartedtosuckoutthegrainandalsoa floatingsuctionelevatoralongsidedischargingintobar ges. WewereduetosailagainwithintheweeksoIsignedonforanother tripandmeanwhileIdid12hourshiftstendingthedonkeyboiler andonegeneratoronnights. 23 Wesailedonthe31stOctoberandonceagainrolledacrossthe NorthAtlanticlikeablownuppaperbag.Butthenhomeward boundthedeckswereawashmostoftheway.Thistripwas practicallythesameasthelastone,exceptitwasgettingcolder.

OnestrangethingImustmention,inallthebarsthereweresugar pourersonthetables.Insteadofsugartheycontainedsalt,theidea beingtotipsomeintoyourglassofbeer.Thebeerwaspretty horribleandIamnotagreatloverofsaltsoIneverdidtryit, perhapsthatwasanotheroflife’sgreatexperiencesImissedouton.

WegotbacktoLondononthe30thNovemberandI gotpaidofand decidedtogosomewherewarmagain.TheHighlandMonarchwas tiedupatthenextberthsoIwentonboardtose eiftherewereany jobsgoing.Isignedonasafridgegreasertosailonthe4th December.ThatwasfourdaystimesoIwenthometoseeMum, DadandthegirlsasIhadn’tbeenhomesinceApril.

TheHighlandMonarchbelongedtotheRoyalMailLineandwas oneof4sistershipsontheSouthAmericarun. 24 Shewasatwinscrewmotorshipofjustover14,000tonswitha speedof15knots,whenshewasn’tbrokendown.Builtin1928sh e was30yearsoldandwasnearlyreadyforthebreakersyardasthe pooroldgirlwasjustaboutwornout.HarlandandWolffwe re buildingthreenewshipsasreplacements,Soitwassailingona wingandaprayerortwo.

Thefirststopoutwardboundwas VigoinSpaintotakeonseveral hundredemigrantsforBrazil.ThentoLisbontopickupfirstclass passengersthenTenerifefo roilthenacrosstheSouthAtlanticto BrazilbutthistimeitwasnorthtoRecifeandSalvadortodisembark theemigrantsthen theothercostalportstoBuenosAires.Themain cargowaschilledbeefandthencasesofcornedbeeffrom Montevideo,about2,000tonsofit,enoughforquiteafewfrittersor sandwiches.

Therefrigerationplantwastwodieseldrivenunitsmadebythe NationalGasEngineCompanyofSandbach.Theyweretwin horizontaljobslookingmorelikeasteammillengine,the wereabout2footindiametertheyweredoubleactingsothe tailrodpassedthroughastuffingboxtoaandopencrank shaftwithhugehandoiledbearingsanda6footdiameterflywheel atoneendandcamsandpushrodstoworkthevalves .Twofurther cranksontheshaftdrovethegascompressorcylinders.

UnlikemodernunitswhichusecarbondioxideorFreon,th egas usedwasammoniawhichhadanastyhabitofleakingfromvalve spindlesandpipejointsmainlyduetotheageoftheplant.Thebrine beingpumpedroundthesystemwasstandardsodiumchloride solution.

TheVoyageendedinLondononthe13thFebruar y.Asageneral refitwasscheduledIstayedonboarduntilunloadingwas completed.

Abriefsummaryofthislocomotive’shistory –builtin1900toan orderfromIsaac OwenfortheMaenofferenSlateQuarryofBlaenau FfestinioginnorthWales.SoldontoThePenrhynSlateQuarryin 1929,andse enoutofusebythemid1940’s.Laterthechassisand cabwereheavilymodifiedtomakeaballastedbrakewagontohelp controltheheavytrainsofslatedescendingthePenrhynRailway. Thislocomotivewasoneoftheinterlopersintoterritorythat productsoftheHunsletLocoCoofLeedsdominated–mostwill haveheardofthe“QuarryHunslet” –another0-4-0saddletank

26 It’salsointerestingtonotethatthisisclearlyoneofthesaddletank designsthatJackBucklerhadinmindwhenheschemed outthe verypopularSweetPealocomotive.Beingoneoftheoutsidersand havingtheunusualBaguleyvalvegearappealedtome. Crucial drawingswereobtainedfromAllenCivilwhowasaformer employeeofBagnall,thisincludedthevalvegear.

Beforewas tingmetalandtimeonthevalvegear,Imadeafullsize mockupwithstripsteelonaplywoodsheettodeterminehowthe valvegearissetupandcheckthatIhadunderstoodthedimensional layoutcorrectly.WhenIgottothestageofbeingabletoairtestthe chassis,therewasoneheartstoppingmoment;thechassisoperated infullforwardgearstraightaway –whatamagicmoment.Butthen IthoughtI’dgotmycomeuppanceasinreversegear,eventswere allovertheplaceanditsimplywouldn’tgo.

Afterseveralcalmingcupsoftea,Ieventuallydiscoveredthatthis valvegearissensitivetotherideheightofthedrivenaxl e.So packingthataxleuptotheheightIfiguredthelocowouldrunat, thenresettingthevalves,andphew,itworkedcorrect lyforwardand reverse.

Boilermakingfollowed–themarineboilerdesignforSweetPea wasusedbutwithappropriatemodificati onstomakeitmore prototypical.Andatthispoint,aquestion–whyarethecommercial boilermakerssoverybusy?Whyaremodelengineersshyingaway frommakingtheirown?Ifyou’reatthepointofdecidingwhetherto makeaboileryourselfornot,dotalktoclubmembers –thereare severalwhohavemadetheirownverysuccessfully.

AndsotoMay2015andthefirstru n.Thiswaswithsome trepidationaswithunknownvalvegear,andbeingashort wheelbaseloco,Ihadwonderedifitwouldbeunstable.But thankfullyitrunsflatandlevelwithnotahintofrockandroll.Only

27 slightdisappointmentisitisveryquiet;the“frontend”issetup usingthewell -knownformulaeforblastnozzlediameter,height fromchimneybaseetc,anditsteamswell.Butit’salmostsilent – nodiscernablechuffwhichisodd.

NowtoourAugust2015familyholidayintheLakeDistrict. HavingthoughtI’dbuiltaminiaturesteamlocomotive,Idiscovered thatitalsofunctionedasa footplatepass!I’llexplain. Wespentapleasingdayat theRavensglass&Eskdale Railway(akatheRatty) – probably mostwillknow somethingofthis15” gaugerailway.So,we bookourrideandtravelup theline(oristhatdownin railwayparl ance –Ialways RiverIrtvalvegear getconfusedwiththis terminology –andperhapsitdoesn’tapplytoadisconnectednarrow gaugeline?).AtDale garthIchattedtothedriveraboutthe locomotiveRiverIrtwhichwasonourtrain.Thislocohasa complicatedhistorywhichI won’tgo intohere.Butitdoeshaveapeculiar valvegear -Brown's,inventedbythe ChiefEngineeroftheSwissLoco works.Thedriverwasn’tabletohelp muchwithhowitworks,butwe enjoyedachatduringwhichIshowed Joeonthefootplate himtwophotosofSanfordwhic hwere onmycamera.Withoutfurtherado,he said“wouldoneofyouliketorideon theenginebacktoRavensglass?”.Ourlad,Joe(15)wasquickoff themarkandsoheenjoyedthetripsittingalongsidethedriver.

28 Toputtheicingonthecake,justaswewerepreparingtogetinour carandleave,therewasaheavyrumbleofatraincoming intothe adjacentmainlinestation.Thisisthedoubletracklinewhichis maintainedtosuperblyhighstandardsasitisusedt otakethe nuclearflasktrainsintoSellafield.Weweren’ttheonlyones attractedtothenoise.ARattyemployeeexplainedwhatwasgoing on–itseemsthelocalpassengertrainswereintroublewithsome failedunits.Tomaintain services,aclass37hadbeen broughtin,haulingjusttwo coaches –trulyfeatherweight. Wewatchedasthisloco– “MaryQueenofScots” departed.The driverclearly knewhewasdriving somethinginterestingand “MaryQueenofScots” playeduptothegalleryby revvinguplikeaboyracerat thetra fficlights,thenshotoffinacloudofblacksmokeandabig grinonhisface!

Laterintheholidaywespentawonderfulday attheThrelkeld MiningMuseumnearKeswick.Thisunusualplacewassetupto preservesomethingofthelocalmineshistory,butisalsohometo theVintageExcavatorTrust.Incredibly,therearearound70 machinesonsite –allcableoperated–nonew -fan gledhydraulics here!AndtheyrangefromdaintyRuston10RB,uptogiantRuston RB7.Mostsatisfying,therearenorestrictionsonsite –wander aboutandclamberamongstthemachineryandclosetotheunfenced railwaytrack.

Butthestarwasclearlyasteamnavvy –RustonProctorNo306 builtin1909.ThismachinewasthesubjectofanarticleinOld GloryJuly2015issue.

29 Typicalofsuchmachines,itlayrottingawayfordecadesuntil rescuedinthelateseventies.ItmovedtoThrelkeldin2008andhas beenthesubjectofasecondrestoration.Justapityitwasn’tin steamatourvisit.

Inevitably achatwiththedriverwasinorder.Heturnedouttobe themainmanonthesite –chairmanofboththeMiningMuseum andtheExcavatorTrust.AndgiventhatthelocowasaBagnall, againIshowedhimmytwopicturesofSanford.Therewasalong pauseaft erwhichheaskedwherehadIgotthedrawingsforthe valvegear;soIrecountedwhatIhaddone.

30 Hisinterestisbecauseheisbuildingafullsizereplicaofoneofthe twoBagnallsthatoperatedtheoriginalThrelkeldQuarr yrailway. TheseenginescarriedBaguleyvalvegear,buthehadnodrawings forsame.So,IsaidIcouldprovidewhatheneedsandwillposthim theinformation.“You’dbettercomeforatripuptheline”hesays – onthefootplate!Whatapluckyengine – pullingsixcarriages,anda gradientthatatonepointis1in24,thelocosimplydugitsheelsin andgotonwiththejob–superb!
