A word read out of place can set a book on fire (“Superstar” 4.17) or send a person to a hell dimension (“Belonging” A2.19); a poorly performed spell can turn mortal enemies into soppy lovebirds (“Something Blue” 4.9); a word in a prophecy might mean “to live” or “to die” or both (“To Shanshu in L.A.” A1.22). -

(1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022). -

Abalea: Death as a Gift in Tolkien and Whedon's Buffy DEATH AS A GIFT IN J.R.R TOLKIEN’S WORK AND BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER “Love will bring you to your gift” is what Buffy is told by a spiritual being under the guise of the First Slayer in the Episode “Intervention” (5.18). The young woman is intrigued and tries to learn more about her gift. The audience is hooked as well: a gift in this show could be a very powerful artefact, like a medieval weapon, and as Buffy has to vanquish a Goddess in this season, the viewers are waiting for the guide to bring out the guns. -

July 20th, 1972 In the distance, a POLICE CAR approaches, lights flashing. 2 INT. GRANITE COUNTRY HOUSE - ICELAND 2 CLOSE on a hand gripping the padded arm of an armchair. The index finger of the hand is PICKING at a thread. The HAND belongs to an intense young man with black hair swept back. He sits motionless, peering at a chess game which is a few moves old. The man is BOBBY FISCHER. A SINGLE FLY begins to buzz against the window. Bobby eyes the fly. The movement of his eyes is immense. Murderous. The thread he has been picking at suddenly TEARS with a THUNDEROUS RIPPING SOUND. SACRIFICE AND SACRED HONOR: WHY THE CONSTITUTION IS A "SUICIDE PACT" Peter Brandon Bayer* ABSTRACT Most legal scholars and elected officials embrace the popular clich6 that "the Constitution is not a suicide pact." Typically, those commentators extol the "Constitution of necessity," the supposition that Government, essentially the Executive, may take any action-may abridge or deny any fundamental right-to alleviate a sufficiently serious national security threat. The "Constitution of necessity" is wrong. This Article explains that strict devotion to the "fundamental fairness" prin- ciples of the Constitution's Due Process Clauses is America's utmost legal and moral duty, surpassing all other considerations, even safety, security and survival. The analysis begins with the most basic premises: the definition of morality and why nations must be moral. This Article defends deontology: the philosophy that because moral principles are a priori, they must be obeyed regardless of terrible outcomes. -

Undoubtedly, therefore, blood sacrifice in the Old Testament could be traced to Babylonian, Canaanite or Ancient Nomadic rituals and fellowship meals according to the New Concise Bible Dictionary. Undue reference made to Old Testament Blood Sacrifice, has become a contemporary basis for some clandestine activities in our society. The purpose of blood sacrifice in the Old Testament is, therefore, paramount. Studies of this nature find the Historical, Theological, Descriptive and Exegetical approach integral to its end product. It is noteworthy at this juncture to observe that some of the Old Testament sacrifices were non-bloody; but, the scope of this study is majorly on the Bloody sacrifices of the Old Testament. Moreover, the symbolic nature and significance of blood sacrifice in the Old Testament is the major stress area of the study. Consequently, it should be on record, that the use or misuse of blood sacrifice, outside the basic Old Testament prescription, by any mortal should, therefore, not only be kept on hold or at abeyance, but also be outrightly abrogated.
