A simplistic stereotypical dyad of metropolitan authority and provincial deference is examined and evidence given for a more complex flow between Museum and regions. The Introduction outlines the thesis aims and the Department’s role in the dissemination of art and design. The thesis is structured around questions examining the historical significance of Circ, the display and installation of Circ’s regional exhibitions, and the flow of influence between regions and museum. Context establishes Circ not as a straightforward continuation of Cole’s Victorian mission but as historically embedded in the post-war period.

University building activity is frequently justified by architects and managers as responding to ‘market forces’. These claims are reflected in institutional discourses about campus redesign and a growing academic and media interest in the organisational space of universities. Discourses often emphasise the positive transformative effects of redevelopment without considering the wider impact on the everyday life of the university. This thesis explores the relationship between institutional space and the construction of individual, social and professional identities, using a case study describing a ten-year campus transformation project at Manchester Metropolitan University. Over this period, the university aimed to: consolidate the number of individual campuses from seven to two; provide new ‘world-class’ facilities for staff and students; create opportunities for ‘improved’ teaching and research activity; and develop the university brand. In real terms, this meant closing existing campus locations and relocating staff and students to an ‘iconic’ new building containing open plan academic offices and flexible student pods.

The first is the Greetings from change in membership subscription, which has significantly reduced the cost of joining the AAH while still allowing those who wish to subscribe to our publications to benefit from heavily discounted rates. The second is the arrival of Matt Lodder as our acting co-ordinator while Claire Davies is on maternity leave. We are delighted to have him as part of our team and wish Claire all the best. The Executive spent much of the Autumn reviewing our activities and setting goals. For example, we want the Annual Conference to act as a showcase for the best Art History in Britain, and our student activities to ensure that there is a strong investment in the next generation of Art Historians. We will look forward to seeing many of you in Manchester in April for the AAH annual conference, which promises to help us achieve both ambitions. There will be much to discuss and to celebrate. We will be joined at our Annual General Meeting by Sandy Heslop, the Chair of the I have recently been appointed 2008 Research Assessment Exercise panel for the History of Art, Senior Administrator, to run the Architecture and Design, who will provide an overview of our field and of day-to-day business of the the decision-making process.
