The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, Arusha, Tanzania Article published on March 31, 2017 Key words: Competition, Allelopathy, Weeds, IPM, Mowing Abstract Over decades invasive plants have been exerting negative pressure on native vascular plant’s and hence devastating the stability and productivity of the receiving ecosystem. These effects are usually irreversible if appropriate strategies cannot be taken immediately after invasion, resulting in high cost of managing them both in rangelands and farmlands. With time, these non-edible plant species will result in a decreased grazing or browsing area and can lead to local extinction of native plants and animals due to decreased food availability. Management of invasive weeds has been challenging over years as a result of increasingly failure of chemical control as a method due to evolution of resistant weeds, higher cost of using chemical herbicide and their effects on the environment. While traditional methods such as timely uprooting and cutting presents an alternative for sustainable invasive weeds management they have been associated with promotion of germination of undesired weeds due to soil disturbance. The fact that chemical and traditional methods for invasive weed management are increasing failing nature based invasive plants management approaches such as competitive facilitation of the native plants and the use of other plant species with allelopathic effects can be an alternative management approach. -

Rosenmann1* OPEN ACCESS 1Department of Neurology, Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center, Israel 2The Louis Borick Natural Medicine Research Center, Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center, Israel Abstract Medicinal plants may provide a potential source of therapeutic agents against Alzheimer’s-disease (AD) and other dementias. In the current study medical plants with an historical/traditional use for improving memory were evaluated for anti-AD activity. Plants were collected mainly from wild species growing in Israel and tested for their protective properties against toxicity of amyloid-beta (Aβ) and a decrease in its secretion by neuronal cells (SHSY5Y and PC12). Of 20 plants tested, 5 plants: Citrullus colocynthis, Cistanche tubulosa, Paronychia argentea, Sisymbrium irio and Origanum dayi Post, showed rescue of cells from amyloid toxicity of 205%, 177%, 42.5%, 40%, and22.7%, respectively. Citrullus colocynthis and Cistanche tubulosa also demonstrated a decreasing trend of 19% and 25%, respectively in Aβ levels secreted by cells. Two additional plants, Varthemia iphionoides and Anchusa strigosa, showed a decreasing trend in secreted amyloid levels of 32% and 34% and a decrease of 23 and 31% in γ-secretase activity respectively. These results point to a potential therapeutic use of medicinal plantssome of which has a long historical/ traditional use for improving memory and should be the basis of further investigation for neurodegenerative diseases such as AD. -

Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. Abstract Cistanche provides benefits not only to desert control but also to the economy because this plant exhibits a high medicinal value and grows under drought conditions. This study aimed to comprehensively analyse Cistanche species by using a visual method based on data from Web of Science (WoS). Bibliometrics and network analysis were employed to investigate various items, including countries, institutions, and frequently cited articles and keywords from 272 articles about Cistanche in 1968–2016. Results showed an increase in the number of Cistanche-related published documents, and China is the leading country with 175 documents. Japan also presented an outstanding achievement (34 documents) and ranked second. Close cooperation existed between China and Japan. Pharmacology and pharmacy were the most popular subjects, followed by chemistry and plant sciences. The most frequently cited article was related to the pharmacology of Cistanche tubulosa. Our keyword analysis revealed that scholars prone to research the pharmacology of phenylethanoid glycosides in C. deserticola and C. tubulosa. This study explored the differences betweenIJSER C. deserticola and C. tubulosa, including their morphological characteristics, host plants and pharmacological effects. Overall, our results provided valuable information for further research on Cistanche. -

Kraus, César A. Bianco & Focko Weberling Summary: Root systems of different Fabaceae genera from central Argentina, are studied in relation to habitat conditions. Species of the following genera were analyzed: Adesmia, Acacia, Caesalpinia, Coursetia, Galactia, Geoffroea, Hoffmannseggia, Prosopis, Robinia, Senna, Stylosanthes and Zornia. Seeds of selected species were collected in each soil geographic unit and placed in glass recipients to analyze root system growth and branching degree during the first months after germination. Soil profiles that were already opened up were used to study subterranean systems of arboreal species. Transverse sections of roots were cut and histological tests were carried out to analyze reserve substances. All species studied show an allorhizous system, whose variants are related to soil profile characteristics. Roots with plagiotropic growth are observed in highland grass steppes (Senna birostris var. hookeriana and Senna subulata), and in soils containing calcium carbonate (Prosopis caldenia). Root buds are found in: Acacia caven, Caesalpinia gilliesii, Senna aphylla, Geoffroea decorticans, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Adesmia cordobensis and Hoffmannseggia glauca. Two variants are observed in transverse sections of roots: a) woody with predominance of xylematic area with highly lignified cells, and b) fleshy with predominance of parenchymatic tissue. -
