TRIUMPHEST/VTR 2013 by Tony Fox

an Rafael, California, 2013, was my 8th oppor- Stunity to join in the fun at Triumphest. This is one of my favorite shows for Triumphs as the location on the west coast makes for a nice vacation break at the same time. The show is alternately organized by local west coast Tri- umph clubs, this year being the responsibility of the Tri- umph Travelers Club from the San Francisco area. Held at a different location each year, this event was made more interesting by Triumphest joining forces with the Vintage Triumph Register (VTR) convention. This joint venture generally brings more attendees to the event and this year was no exception, bringing out around 240 Triumphs, including some very rare models. The show brought back memories of how colourful cars from this era were, mak- ing a stunning display en masse in the parking lot and the various event venues. It is not a big Stag event but there were 6 attending, from Washington, California and Kansas on display, one of which had a ‘For Sale’ sticker on it! I met up with Dick Han- sen with his white RV8 Stag, Greg Taylor from Spokane, Kent Prather with his Corvette engined Stag, Bill Borsari with his original specification Stag, and Tim Richardson from Washington state. This was the only time I can remember seeing five Triumph Mayflowers in one place, quite remarkable. One had been converted with a stretched chassis to make a mini limo. Another was electric powered, and the owner had somehow stuffed six large batteries in the trunk and four more under the hood, somewhere there must have been room for an electric power unit. One left hand drive Dolomite was on display, not often you see a LHD version. Other rarely seen models this side of the Atlantic were two Triumph Roadsters and a Triumph 2000 four door sedan. In the lobby of the hotel was the race TR3 of Hardy Prentice who raced in SCCA from 1973 to 1998 and won 71 national races with it, not to mention other placings on the winner’s rostrum. (Must have been close getting it through the front sliding doors of the hotel lobby!)
