Mtv and Transatlantic Cold War Music Videos
102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Of course, most music videos were not political.2 Yet, as “Peace Sells” suggests, dur- ing the 1980s—the decade of Reagan’s “Star Wars” program, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and a robust nuclear arms race—music videos had the potential to relect political concerns. MTV’s founders, however, were so culturally conserva- tive that many were initially wary of playing African American artists; addition- ally, record labels were hesitant to put their top artists onto this new, risky chan- 1 American President Ronald Reagan had increased peace-time deicit defense spending substantially. -

ODDS is honored to welcome the Racial Justice Program of the American Civil Liberties Union as this month's screening sponsor. 20+ years ago, a woman in upstate New York reports an attempted rape by a young black man who cut his hand during the altercation. While looking for suspects, police contact officials at nearby SUNY Oneonta. A school administrator hands over names and residences of 125 black male students. Those students are subsequently tracked down and interrogated under a presumption of guilty until proven innocent. In Brothers of the Black List<http://www.brothersoftheblacklist.com/about.html>, director Sean Gallagher tracks this story of racism that became the longest litigated civil rights case in American history. The Pomeranian Region: Parties and the Party Structure of the Voivodeship Sejmik After 1998
POLISH POLITICAL SCIENCE VOL XL 2011 PL ISSN 0208-7375 THE POMERANIAN REGION: PARTIES AND THE PARTY STRUCTURE OF THE VOIVODESHIP SEJMIK AFTER 1998 by Beata Słobodzian ! e elections are an important element of the political system; indica- tor of the proper functioning of a democratic state. The Preludes in Chinese Style
The Preludes in Chinese Style: Three Selected Piano Preludes from Ding Shan-de, Chen Ming-zhi and Zhang Shuai to Exemplify the Varieties of Chinese Piano Preludes D.M.A. DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jingbei Li, D.M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 D.M.A. Document Committee: Professor Steven M. Glaser, Advisor Dr. Arved Ashby Dr. Edward Bak Copyrighted by Jingbei Li, D.M.A 2019 ABSTRACT The piano was first introduced to China in the early part of the twentieth century. Perhaps as a result of this short history, European-derived styles and techniques influenced Chinese composers in developing their own compositional styles for the piano by combining European compositional forms and techniques with Chinese materials and approaches. In this document, my focus is on Chinese piano preludes and their development. Having performed the complete Debussy Preludes Book II on my final doctoral recital, I became interested in comprehensively exploring the genre for it has been utilized by many Chinese composers. This document will take a close look in the way that three modern Chinese composers have adapted their own compositional styles to the genre. Composers Ding Shan-de, Chen Ming-zhi, and Zhang Shuai, while prominent in their homeland, are relatively unknown outside China. The Three Piano Preludes by Ding Shan-de, The Piano Preludes and Fugues by Chen Ming-zhi and The Three Preludes for Piano by Zhang Shuai are three popular works which exhibit Chinese musical idioms and demonstrate the variety of approaches to the genre of the piano prelude bridging the twentieth century. -
SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos
Transnational networking and cooperation among neo-reformist left parties in Southern Europe during the Eurozone crisis: SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos Vladimir Bortun The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. March 2019 Abstract European parties to the left of social democracy have always lagged behind the main political families in terms of transnational cooperation at the level of the EU. However, the markedly transnational character of the Eurozone crisis and of the management of that crisis has arguably provided a uniquely propitious context for these parties to reduce that gap. This research project aims to establish whether they achieved that by focusing on three parties that were particularly prone to seeking an increase in their transnational cooperation: SYRIZA from Greece, Bloco de Esquerda from Portugal and Podemos from Spain. For these parties not only come from the member states most affected by the crisis, both economically and politically, but they also share several programmatic and strategic features favouring such an increase. By using a mix of document analysis, semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation, the thesis discusses both the informal and formal transnational networking and cooperation among the three parties. This discussion reveals four key findings, with potentially useful insights for wider transnational party cooperation that are to be pursued in future research. Firstly, the transnational networking and cooperation among SYRIZA, Bloco and Podemos did increase at some point during the crisis, particularly around SYRIZA’s electoral victory in January 2015. Secondly, since the U-turn of that government in July 2015, SYRIZA’s relationship with both Bloco and Podemos has declined significantly, as reflected in their diverging views of the EU. -
Supplementary Appendix
Ezrow, Homola and Tavits. “When Extremism Pays.” Journal of Politics. Supplementary Appendix The meaning of Left and Right across time and space (footnote 13) Several studies suggest that the patterns of ideological structuring underlying the left-right scale may differ between Eastern and Western Europe (e.g., Evans and Whitefield 1993) as well as across countries and time (Evans and Whitefield 1998; Harbers, De Vries, and Steenbergen 2012; Linzer 2008; Markowski 1997). Nevertheless, there are strong arguments that suggest the left-right ideological dimension can be a useful framework for analyzing political competition in post-communist democracies. Marks et al. (2006: 169) report that the “theory of party positioning developed for Western European political parties does, indeed, apply to Central and Eastern Europe.” Survey-based studies suggests that respondents in postcommunist Europe are as likely to place themselves on the left-right scale as in other countries, and to base their voting decision on these positions (Pop-Eleches and Tucker 2010, 2011; see also McAllister and White 2007). Rohrschneider and Whitefield (2012, 92-93) similarly state, “The results make plain that citizens in W[estern] E[urope] and CEE have, broadly viewed, developed a similar understanding of left-right ideology regarding the economic dimension.”1 Additionally, Linzer (2008), using a cross-national sample of countries, demonstrates that voters’ interpretation of the left-right scale is likely to differ across countries. Harbers, De Vries and Steenbergen (2012) reach a similar conclusion studying three Latin American countries. However, Linzer does not find that the CEE countries are systematically different from their western neighbors: the left-right spectrum structures public opinion in some countries better than others within both regions. -
