Rare Aberdeen printing of The Whole Duty of Man , the bestselling devotional guide which went through twelve editions by 1727, and attained an almost canonical authority in advice manuals of the eighteenth century. ‘ The Whole Duty of Man was intended to show “the very meanest readers” how “to behave themselves so in this world that they may be happy for ever in the next”. This best-selling manual’s prescription of morality and effort was balanced by an emphasis on divine grace and devotional practice: the result was sober, orthodox, common-sense advice pitched at the level of ordinary Anglican parishioners.’ [ODNB] The work is attributed to Richard Allestree (1621/22-1681), noted divine, censor at Oxford and tutor, who was an enthusiastic royalist, working as a courier to the King. He was later canon of Christ Church and provost of Eton College. -

Rebuilding the Rhaeto-Cisalpine written language: Guidelines and criteria. Part I: ORS-Orthography Claudi Meneghin Institud de studis Rhaeto-Cisalpins Abstract This paper is the first one of a series aimed at reconstructing a uni- tary Rhaeto-Cisalpine written language, including ISO 639-3 Piedmontese, Ligurian, Lombard, Emilian-Romagnol, Venetan, Istriot, Ladin, Romansh and Friulian. We shall assume that, on the one hand, written language is (relatively) independent from its spoken counterpart; on the other hand, we will fully treat the Rhaeto-Cisalpine (or Padanese) system as a unitary one, belonging to the western branch of Romance languages. After show- ing that none of the current orthographies now in place can be extended to cope with the whole language, we propose to retrieve a medieval-like orthography (close to that of Subalpine sermons), in the same spirit of Alibert’s for Occitan, Stich’s for Francoprovençal and Hull’s unified Pada- nian orthography. We yield a few examples of transcriptions of excerpts from literary texts. Our work lies in the following framework: • According to Hull (1982), Schmid (1956, 79-80), Bec (1970-71, vol. II, 316), the Rhaeto-Cisalpine (or Padanese) system is a unitary one, belonging to the western branch of Romance languages, and thus strictly related to French, Occitan, Catalan (This is nowadays almost universally accepted, except perhaps —as efficaciously depicted in Hull (1989, 8)— by some scholars still applying unscientific criteria unconsciously inherited by the Italian Risorgimento political bias). -

Guy Puzey 31 January 2011 Abstract This thesis investigates the development of the present-day linguistic hegemonies within Italy and Norway as products of ongoing linguistic ‘wars of position’. Language activist movements have been key actors in these struggles, and this study seeks to address how such movements have operated in attempts to translate their linguistic ideologies into de facto language policy through mechanisms such as political agitation, propaganda and the use of language in public spaces.
