    Australian Plants Suitable for Tamworth Regional Council Areas Eucalyptus blakelyi Photo Tony Croft Tamworth Group of Australian Plants Society As at July 2007 Eucalyptus blakelyi II TAMWORTH REGIONAL COUNCIL RAINFALL DATA Most of the Tamworth Regional Council area receives an average annual rainfall of 600 to 800mm except for the north- west corner on the Mount Kaputar plateau and the tablelands country from Bendemeer through Woolbrook to Hanging Rock above Nundle which often receives between 800 to 1000mm. Similarly temperatures vary across the region with average annual minimums on the tablelands and nearby areas between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius. A series of frosts are received across the entire region each winter. Average annual maximums are between 18 and 21 degrees on the tablelands, 21 to 24 degrees across most of the region and 24 to 27 degrees in the west of the region. 1. Barraba 2.     Home among the gum trees While the sight and smells of Australia’s iconic gum trees evoke stirrings of national pride, our Eucalyptus seem to have an image problem when it comes to our own backyard. We love the thought of these iconic trees providing beauty and habitat for native wildlife in the suburbs but most homeowners don’t want to plant one in their garden. They complain that they are too big, inclined to shed big branches on homes or cars without warning, have aggressive tree roots that lift and smash paving and create work by continually dropping leaves into gutters. The staff and volunteers at Perth’s Kings Park and Botanic Gardens (KPBG) are concerned with the tree’s poor image and want to change it. Their solution is to recommend and promote ten small West Australian eucalypts which are trouble free and perfect for small gardens. These beautiful shrubs and small trees have fringed, gum flowers that attract nectar eating birds and mammals and most have beautiful ornamental buds nuts that hang on the tree long after the flowers have faded. Rare trees Senior Curator Grady Brand from KPBG said that other than Eucalyptus beardiana and Eucalyptus brandiana, which are rare in the wild and cultivation, the trees were commercially available. The rare species are being grown from seed collected at KPBG and are sold at special plant sales at the park. Mr Brand said that Eucalyptus caesia was an example of a tree threatened in the wild which was now a common in gardens around Australia because of its beauty and compact size.

Heads Buffalo Museum of Science, 1020 Humboldt Parkway, Buffalo, NY 14211-1293, USA. [email protected] ABSTRACT. This paper reviews the biogeography and ecology of the family Meliaceae and maps many of the clades. Recently published molecular phylogenies are used as a framework to interpret distributional and ecological data. The sections on distribution concentrate on allopatry, on areas of overlap among clades, and on centres of diversity. The sections on ecology focus on populations of the family that are not in typical, dry-ground, lowland rain forest, for example, in and around mangrove forest, in peat swamp and other kinds of freshwater swamp forest, on limestone, and in open vegetation such as savanna woodland. Information on the altitudinal range of the genera is presented, and brief notes on architecture are also given. The paper considers the relationship between the distribution and ecology of the taxa, and the interpretation of the fossil record of the family, along with its significance for biogeographic studies. Finally, the paper discusses whether the evolution of Meliaceae can be attributed to ‘radiations’ from restricted centres of origin into new morphological, geographical and ecological space, or whether it is better explained by phases of vicariance in widespread ancestors, alternating with phases of range expansion. Moore) EXT to the salmon gum, the gimlet tree is perhaps the best-known of the trees N of the Eastern Agricultural Districts and the Eastern Goldfields. A thin reddish- brown bark, and a fluted or spirally-twisted trunk (especially in the young trees), distinguish at a- glance the gimlet trees or fluted gums from all other Eucalyptus trees. This bark has a thin outer layer which when removed reveals a sappy pale green, inner bark, and sometimes this inner green bark is exposed when the trees shed their reddish-brown outer bark towards the end of summer.

Executive Summary Climate change is likely to have a significant effect on many trees in the City of Melbourne. Some species will perform better, while some will perform worse. The report describes the results of a project exploring the vulnerability of tree species currently planted in the City of Melbourne, and identifies some potential new species that may be more suitable for the City’s climate futures. A list of species combining those currently in the City of Melbourne’s urban forest with those being newly planted in the City of Melbourne was created. The global locations where species occur naturally and are in cultivation (and abundance where available) were compiled from existing datasets, such as ‘open data’ tree inventories and extracted from other published data, from approximately 200 cities around the world.
