  • EDMUND CAPON Edmund Capon Was Appointed Director of the Art
EDMUND CAPON Edmund Capon was appointed Director of the Art Gallery of NSW in November 1978 for a three year term – the first internationally-trained art historian and curator to be appointed to the role. He held this position for 33 years, retiring at the end of 2011. During his tenure, he oversaw two significant building expansions, particularly regarding the Asian galleries. He established a corporate foundation based upon the NGV model to fund purchases for the collection, oversaw significant collection development and curated many important exhibitions of Australian and International art. He also continued to research, write and publish, and produced a three-part TV series, Meishu – Travels in Chinese Art for the ABC and China Central TV. Edmund Capon (b. 1940), commenced his museum career at a commercial gallery in London whilst a student at the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 1966, he began his career at the Victorian and Albert Museum. Having completed an MPhil in Chinese art and archaeology (including language) from London University’s Department of Oriental and African Studies, he was appointed assistant keeper in the Far Eastern Section of V&A in 1973. Acknowledged as a specialist in his field, he undertook three cultural tours to China between 1974 and 1978. It was during the first of these tours in Xian that he witnessed the initial diggings which revealed the entombed warriors. In 1976, he was commissioned by the Australia Council and Art Exhibitions Australia to write and publish a book, Art and Archeology in China. The book was an accompaniment to The Chinese Exhibition: a selection of recent archaeological finds of the People’s Republic of China which toured the state galleries of Victoria, NSW and South Australia in 1977.

  • A Study of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Australian
A Study of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Australian Aboriginal Art: Aboriginal Perspectives and Representations in State Art Galleries Vanessa Russ Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours), College of Fine Arts, UNSW This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts May 2013 i Vanessa Russ: Dissertation Abstract This study of the Art Gallery of New South Wales explores the role that Australian Aboriginal art has had in one important state institution. It also provides the groundwork for furthering our understanding of how state art galleries manage their discourses of Australian and Aboriginal identities. The search by Aboriginal people, for belonging and trust in national representations, continues to challenge state art galleries. If as art historian Amelia Jones suggests the notion of art, art history and art institutions are inventions, then such inventions should make room for new art and new art theory (Jones 23). While state art galleries are currently working to generate new displays of Australian art that include Australian Aboriginal art, there remains no complete study of how any state art gallery has managed its Aboriginal collections. This study of the role of Australian Aboriginal art within the Art Gallery of New South Wales provides evidence of personal advocacy as the driving force behind its achievements. Here personal advocacy and by extension, cultural subjectivity, is the key to the creation of an art gallery. ii Vanessa Russ: Dissertation Table of Content 1. Abstract page ii 2. Somebody just said that they saw an iceberg just outside Textilshiki Metro station. Nobody laughed. I am thinking what would happen back in my home town if the mercury went anywhere lower than a couple of degrees below freezing point.

  • Vale Edmund George Capon AM OBE PDF 118 KB
Council 8 April 2019 Item 3.2 Vale Edmund George Capon AM OBE File No: S051491 Minute by the Lord Mayor To Council: I want to pay tribute to the death of the long serving Director of the Art Gallery of NSW, Edmund George Capon AM OBE, who passed away in London on Tuesday 19 March 2019. Born in London in 1940, Edmund gained his passion for painting during his early school years in Kent, insisting on travelling with easel and paintbox during summer holidays with his family. His father, a paper mill manager, insisted that the young Edmund take up a “respectable career” after he left school. Conforming with his father’s wishes, he trained as a chartered surveyor, working for a few years in London. Once he had passed his exams, he returned to his interest in art, managing an art gallery, painting portraits and studying drawing at a Chelsea studio. He also learned to speak Chinese as a photograph of the Great Wall of China had piqued his interest in Chinese art. This was a precursor to studying at the London University School of Oriental and African Studies where he graduated with a Master of Philosophy in Chinese art and archaeology. He matched this by studying 20th-century painting at the Courtauld Institute of Art at London University. He joined the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1966, initially in the Textile Department before moving to the Museum’s Far Eastern Section, where he held the position of assistant keeper from 1973 to1978. Edmund was invited to apply for the position of Director of the Art Gallery of NSW while on his first visit to Sydney in 1977 to promote a book and exhibition on Chinese art.
