As part of Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Month featuring coastal adventures and stewardship travel activities throughout WineCoastCountry from the Guadalupe Dunes, Edna Valley Wine Country and Avila Beach to Cambria and San Simeon, WineCoastCountry.com presents The Living Sea by McGillivray Freeman Films. Nominated for an Academy Award in 1995 for best documentary short and narrated by Meryl Streep with music by Sting, The Living Sea explores our relationship with the complex and fragile ocean and celebrates our national aquatic and underwater treasures preserved within the National Marine Sanctuary System. Swim Among the Jellyfish Shot in exotic locations around the world, audiences swim among thousands of golden jellyfish, witness the bizarre spawning behavior of giant clams, come face-to-face with humpback whales life-size on the giant screen, surf thundering waves in Hawaii and ride in a Coast Guard Rescue boat with cadets training to save lives at Cape Disappointment, home to some of the roughest surf in the world. Visitors and locals alike are invited to join in the celebration of our national aquatic and underwater treasures that are preserved within the National Marine Sanctuary System. Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary In 1972, exactly 100 years after the first National Park was created, the nation made a similar commitment to preserving its marine treasures by establishing the National Marine Sanctuary System. Since then, thirteen national marine sanctuaries and one marine national monument, representing a wide variety of ocean environments, have been established. That system includes deep ocean gardens, near shore coral reefs, whale migration corridors, deep sea canyons, and even underwater archaeological sites. On the West Coast, these sites include the Olympic Coast of Washington, Gulf of the Farallones near San Francisco, Monterey Bay, and the Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara. The Coastal Discovery Center located in San Simeon is a joint venture between the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and California State Parks, and has been cooperatively managed by both agencies since it opened in the summer of 2006. Located at William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach, the center highlights the connection between land and sea through engaging exhibits and interpretation provided by trained volunteers. Free to the public and open year- round, the CDC offers visitors an exciting opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural treasures of the region, and the role sanctuaries, parks and the public play in protecting these treasures for future generations.
