For the first half of the 20th Century, Mount Wilson was the most famous observatory in the world. The biggest FUN NEW EMCEE telescopes were here, and their new designs were changing the way astronomy was done. Among the many discoveries made on the mountain, a few revolutionized our understanding of our place in the Universe. Here, for the first time, Harlow Shapley measured the size of the Milky Way Galaxy and located our position in it, far from the center. Then Edwin Hubble proved that the mysterious spiral nebulae, which astronomers had speculated about for decades, were in GIFTS FOR EVERYONE fact distant galaxies similar to our own. Then Hubble teamed up with Milton Humason and discovered that this immense Universe was expanding. Space itself was getting bigger. This finding, when run backwards in time, lead straight to the Big Bang Theory. it held a real gem. In the McKittrick Hotel is the Penny Bar TOUR TO MORRO BAY and Grill. The entry from a dusty parking lot is an archway Photos by: Eduardo Arrieta and Gordon Jackson encrusted with pennies glued to the wall. Once inside all the walls, except behind the bar, are also covered with pennies. The restroom doors are easily identified; “Ladies” is spelled out in newer, more shiny pennies. The waitress was sassy and the food was hearty (farmer and oil worker fare). Refreshed, rested and odometer zeroed, it is time to head west on Highway 58. McKittrick is on the western edge of the Central Valley, so the route begins climbing from the edge of town onto the Carriso Plain, re-crossing the San Adreas Fault, then the Coastal Range. It is also a transition from dry valley to 55 miles of gently curving 2-lane highway with miles of hillsides covered in flowers. Around Soda Lake Park, the flowers are so thick that the turn outs are packed with flower-tourists. To avoid the traffic of San Luis Obispo, a jog north to High- way 41 is taken. After Atascadero it is a pleasant, traffic-free, decent back down to sea level ending right on Main Street of Morro Bay. The day ended with a great dinner at Dorn’s Breakers Cafe. But more was to come. Sunday, we each ventured off to see different sights. At the crack of dawn, I hit the links at Morro Bay Golf Course and GPX Tour to Morro Bay – Alan Johnson was surprised by a resident flock of wild turkeys. We gathered in Ventura Saturday, April 8th, to begin the fun part of the tour to Morro Bay. Traveling CA Highway 33 east bound, the first ten miles pass quickly on a 4-lane highway. Entering Casitas Springs, the four-lane with a wide median reduces to two lanes twisting under a canopy of oak trees. The Hearst Castle offers breathtaking views. Entering Ojai the left turn onto Maricopa Highway marks the beginning of the twisting up through the . A stop at Pine Mountain Summit, 5100 feet, opens a vista down onto the San Andreas Fault. After a roller coaster decent of several thousand feet, the road changes to a meandering track past ranches and farms that dot the valley along the fault. As we approach the final hill before the decent to the town of Ventucopa on the floor of the Central Valley, bright yellow wildflowers covered the hill sides. On this part of the western side of the Central valley is one of the oldest, but most productive oil fields in California. In some areas, the pumpjacks are only a few hundred yards apart. The age of the field is apparent; the pumpjacks are small and rusted while others are much larger for deeper wells. It is an easy drive through the oil patch towns of Maricopa and Taft to Drivers stop to admire the view from the top of the Pine Mountain our lunch stop at mile 87 in McKittrick.
