Natural Histories chapter 1 Natural Histories “The action of the first human being in this golden age—wrote Linnaeus in a paraphrase of the Biblical story of creation—was the inspection of the crea- tures and the imposition of the names of the species according to genera”.1 The naming of creatures was also very much in the mind of the eighteenth-century Jesuit historian Pedro Lozano (1697–1752). In his Chorographic Description of the Great Chaco (Madrid, 1733), while describing the animals of that land, Lozano enumerated seven species of bees: yamacuá or mongrel bee, yalamacuá or moromoro bee, aneacuá or small black bee, and so on.2 Unlike Linnaeus, whose biological systematics was indissolubly tied to Latin, Lozano classified the bees using their aboriginal names and the implicit native taxonomy.3 He took those names from the vocabulary of the tongue of the Lules written by the Jesuit Antonio Machoni (or Macioni, 1672–1753), who in 1711 founded the reduction of San Esteban de Miraflores for this people from the eastern Andean valleys. As a procurator of the province of Paraquaria in Madrid and Rome, Father Machoni published his Arte y vocabulario de la lengua Lule y Tonocoté and also saw through the press Lozano’s Chorographic Description, the earliest example of the kind of natural history written by Jesuit missionaries in Paraquaria.4 1 Linnaeus, Systema naturae, 12th ed. Unable to fulfill his commission because of the delay of the Portuguese party, during the two decades he lived in South America Azara took to the study of the geography and zoology of the region. His books on quadrupeds and birds, modeled upon Buffon’s Histoire naturelle, were the first thorough and system- atic accounts of the beasts and birds of the land.5 Azara’s most popular work, Voyages dans l’Amérique Méridionale (Paris, 1809)—to this day a major source of information about the land and peoples of Paraguay and Río de la Plata—is strongly anti-Jesuitical.6 The naturalist Charles A. Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.

    Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Uno de nuestros ensayos de cabecera era Misión de la Universidad, del maestro Ortega. Por otro lado, me iniciaba en la investigación científica como becario del Instituto de Economía «Sancho de Mancada», que dirigía por aquel entonces el profesor Zumalacárregui; seguía seminarios en el Instituto de Estudios Políticos, en los que nos azuzaba la mente el profesor Valentín Andrés Alvarez, y mi maes­ tro, el profesor Torres, me daba consejos sobre el trabajo cien­ tífico en el grupo que dirigía en el Instituto de Cultura Hispá­ nica.

McCall. 2 The Societatis Iesu (The Society of Jesus) was founded ca. 1534 by a Spaniard knight- turned priest, Ignacio de Loyola. Loyola established the order with the sole purpose of defending the Catholic faith against the sixteenth century Protestant reformation in Europe. In the first two centuries of their existence, the Jesuits quickly gained a degree of authority in European kingdoms, instituting educational programs and advising the kings and queens of Europe’s most important empires. The Jesuits first reached Santiago de Chile on April 11, 1593, establishing their first mission house soon after their arrival. In order to gain followers, the Order founded its first school, the Colegio San Miguel, beginning long-lasting support of education. Two centuries after their arrival to the Chilean province, the Jesuits had significantly grown financially and had established a bond with both the indigenous and Creole communities. But the Jesuits’ long presence in the Chilean province was interrupted during the last part of the eighteenth century. During the eighteenth century, an ideological movement, the Enlightenment, arose in England and France and slowly took over the rest of Western Europe. Followers of this new philosophical thought called for social and political reforms and sought to separate Church and State by centralizing the political power in secular hands.

    AFJC 28 • Huesca • 2014 • ISSN 0213-1404 Joaquín Costa en el Ateneo de Madrid y el Ateneo en tiempos de Costa1 ALBERTO GIL NOVALES2 Partiendo de la llegada de Costa a Madrid en 1869, se pasa al conferenciante del Ateneo, cuyo ambiente se describe, y el influjo en Costa de los cambios políticos, y de la manera en que estos repercuten sobre él, obligándole para siempre a no ser catedrático de Universidad. Se detallan las 38 conferencias del Ateneo sobre La España del siglo XIX. Se considera a Costa como africanista y como presidente de Ciencias Históricas del Ateneo, y las informaciones que dirige, Tutela de pueblos en la Historia y Oligarquía y caciquismo y su discurso en las Cortes contra el proyecto de Maura de represión del terrorismo, y su trabajo en el Ateneo para su testamento en forma novelesca.
