Dublin: Four Courts Press.Ireland. 2006.240-266 pp. The study of foreign communities within the realm of the Spanish monarchy has to date received little scholarly attention in the work of Spanish historians. The realm's multi-ethnic composition is reflected in the thousands of Flemish, German, Italian and Irish men who not only served as the bulk of the Spanish multinational army in Europe but also reached the highest positions both in the army and the administration. Despite their number, however, we know relatively little about these 'foreigners' - the 'pull' and 'push' factor s that shaped their migration, their identities as a group (a 'nación', to use the Spanish term), their capacity to exert influence at court, or the extent of their integration into Spanish society. In fact, until recently, the Irish presence in Spain tended to be viewed in a vague, somewhat romanticized fashion, with little precise information on real numbers of migrants or their impact on their host society. Irish migration was interpreted almost exclusively in terms of religious turmoil in Ireland, the migrants being viewed as victims of religious persecution who were driven to take refuge in Catholic Spain. According to this line of intepretation, the Spanish court had a duty to lend assistance to 'our poor brothers from the North', while the Irish exile was merely a passive recipient in the relationship.1 It seemed as if 'tragic', 'catastrophic', 'unhappy' Irish history had been transferred to Spain according to the commentaries published by Spanish historians, Centralists and Nationalists alike.2 New research is changing these inherited interpretations. -

The Emperor Charles VI and Spain (1700-1740)
19 April 2010 William O’Reilly (University of Cambridge) The Emperor Who Could Not Be King: The Emperor Charles VI and Spain (1700-1740) ‘Sad news’, wrote the Archduke Charles of Austria, self-styled King of Spain, on learning of the death of his elder brother, the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I, in 1711. ‘From my house, only I remain. All falls to me.’ Terse as it may be, this obiter reveals the twin pillars of Charles VI’s imperial ideology: dynastic providence and universal dominion. In this expansive and absorbing paper, William O’Reilly offered an account of the career of the Emperor Charles VI as manqué King of Spain. The childless death of Charles II, the last Habsburg King of Spain, in 1700, ignited a succession crisis that engulfed Europe in conflict. Standard accounts of the War of the Spanish Succession treat the two pretenders, Philip Duc d’Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV, and the Archduke Charles, younger son of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, as ciphers in a game of grand strategy. But Dr O’Reilly presented a compelling case for re- appraisal. His study of Charles revealed the decisive influence of personal ambition and court politics on the business of state formation in the early-eighteenth century. Arriving in Barcelona in the late summer of 1705, the Archduke was immediately proclaimed King Charles III of Spain throughout Catalonia. During his six years in Barcelona, he cultivated long-standing Catalan suspicions of Madrid (in Bourbon hands from 1707) to construct a Habsburg party among the Aragonese elite. -

Differing grand strategies can lead to disagreements about strategic priorities and the value of possible operations. However, poor personal rela- tions can do more to wreck an alliance than differing opinions over strategy. While good personal relations can keep an alliance operating smoothly, it is often military necessity (and the threat of grand strategic failure) that forces important compro- mises. In the case of the Western Mediterranean, it was the urgent situation created by the Allied defeat at Almanza that forced the British and Austrians to create a work- able solution. chapter 1 Natural Histories “The action of the first human being in this golden age—wrote Linnaeus in a paraphrase of the Biblical story of creation—was the inspection of the crea- tures and the imposition of the names of the species according to genera”.1 The naming of creatures was also very much in the mind of the eighteenth-century Jesuit historian Pedro Lozano (1697–1752). In his Chorographic Description of the Great Chaco (Madrid, 1733), while describing the animals of that land, Lozano enumerated seven species of bees: yamacuá or mongrel bee, yalamacuá or moromoro bee, aneacuá or small black bee, and so on.2 Unlike Linnaeus, whose biological systematics was indissolubly tied to Latin, Lozano classified the bees using their aboriginal names and the implicit native taxonomy.3 He took those names from the vocabulary of the tongue of the Lules written by the Jesuit Antonio Machoni (or Macioni, 1672–1753), who in 1711 founded the reduction of San Esteban de Miraflores for this people from the eastern Andean valleys. As a procurator of the province of Paraquaria in Madrid and Rome, Father Machoni published his Arte y vocabulario de la lengua Lule y Tonocoté and also saw through the press Lozano’s Chorographic Description, the earliest example of the kind of natural history written by Jesuit missionaries in Paraquaria.4 1 Linnaeus, Systema naturae, 12th ed. Apocryphilia Simon Matthews Our Island Story Before the teaching of history to children in this country descended to its current formula of dinosaurs + Romans + Henry VIII + Hitler (with a side helping of slavery) the past was taught in a rather different way. Many who were at primary school pre-1980 will be familiar with it: Our Island Story, the carefully nuanced account of how ‘the British Isles’ produced the greatest and most progressive people in the world. Written in 1905 it was, remarkably (or not?), still a common textbook 70 years later. It’s durability, popularity and influence, over a century later, has been recently cited by prime minister David Cameron and the centre-right think tank Civitas as an example of something they would like to see updated and reintroduced. Why is this? The Our Island Story narrative certainly has its attractions. Stressing national unity, in which Englishness is overwhelmingly predominant, it gives key early roles to Alfred the Great and William the Conqueror – the latter not, of course, English – with the repelling of foreign invasions and conquests (nothing since 1066) a critical factor, highlighted by the dispersal of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and, latterly, the defeat of Napoleon (1815) and Hitler (1940). British/English excursions into Europe are seen as the brilliantly executed ventures of plucky underdogs (Agincourt, Waterloo and Dunkirk are typical here) against overwhelming odds. The literary backdrop, from Shakespeare, Milton, Pepys, Dickens etc., embellishes this. Milton appears more or less in tandem with Cromwell, both as exemplars of grimly moral, upstanding and typically English parliamentarians – refusing to bow down before Rome and ensuring the lasting legitimacy of the House of Commons.....this being portrayed throughout the book as the finest and fairest legislature in the world. -

Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses. -
