DiCuirci, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Elizabeth Hewitt, Adviser Jared Gardner Susan Williams Copyright by Lindsay Erin Marks DiCuirci 2010 ABSTRACT “History’s Imprint: The Colonial Book and the Writing of American History, 1790-1855” investigates the role that reprinted colonial texts played in the development of historical consciousness in nineteenth-century America. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, antiquarians and historians began to make a concerted effort to amass and preserve an American archive of manuscript and print material, in addition to other artifacts and “curiosities” from the colonial period. Publishers and editors also began to prepare new editions of colonial texts for publication, introducing nineteenth-century readers to these historical artifacts for the first time. My dissertation considers the role of antiquarian collecting and historical publishing—the reprinting of colonial texts—in the production of popular historical narratives. I study the competing narratives of America’s colonial origins that emerged between 1790 and 1855 as a result of this new commitment to historicism and antiquarianism. I argue that the acts of selecting, editing, and reprinting were ideologically charged as these colonial texts were introduced to new audiences. Instead of functioning as pure reproductions of colonial books, these texts were used to advocate specific religious, political, and cultural positions in the nineteenth century. In addition, these reprints and the stories they contained exposed the instability and heterogeneity of American history and challenged the myth of a unified national identity. ii My dissertation is divided into three parts and each analyzes the nineteenth- century construction of a particular epoch of colonial history: Columbus’s discovery of the Caribbean, England’s settlement of Virginia, and the Puritans’ landing in New England. This organization reflects both the regional variations evident in nineteenth- century historical writing and the ideological underpinnings of these vastly different colonial narratives. My analysis reveals that colonial history became contested territory in the nineteenth century as writers and readers grappled with the notion of American exceptionalism—a belief in America’s unique role in modern history—and as they sought to locate the roots of democracy. Using the methodologies of book history and literary criticism, my dissertation enriches studies of American literary history, print culture, regionalism, and transnationalism. iii DEDICATION To Mike and my parents, for their love, patience, and encouragement iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am indebted to many people for the completion of this project. The art of printing affords a mode of preservation more effectual than Corinthian brass or Egyptian marble.” Jeremy Belknap, Address to the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1792 A witness to the birth of the United States, publisher and antiquarian Ebenezer Hazard immediately recognized the new nation’s need to preserve colonial records. In a series of letters to Jeremy Belknap, co-founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Hazard discussed the idea of publishing a collection of colonial documents that might aid in writing the nation’s first histories. Belknap warned that the publication would be a “risque” but that “there is a necessity for a risque in all such cases” (235). While a narrative history would be “more popular and profitable than such a collection,” the collection would provide a crucial basis for understanding the “facts” of colonial history. As Hazard responded, “I think materials such as mine will, of themselves, form the best history that can be published, as they will furnish facts free from the glosses of commentators” (262). Though neither Hazard’s Historical Collections (1792-4) nor Belknap’s own American Biography (1794, 1798) sold well—for the very reasons Belknap had stated—their work established a tradition of historical publishing, or the reprinting of historical texts, that became tremendously influential in establishing an American

Thanks Tto his activity the archival and manuscript resources concen- trated in the Boston area, if we extend it slightly north to include Salem and slightly west to include Worcester, are so rich and diverse as to be almost beyond the dreams of avarice. Not quite, of course, because Boston institutions and the super—pack rats who direct them are still eager to add to their resources of this kind, and constantly do. The admirable and long-awaited Guide to Archives and Manu- scripts in the United States, compiled by the National Historical Publications Commission and now in press, contains entries for be- tween 50 and 60 institutions holding archival and manuscript ma- terials in the Greater Boston area, with the immense complex of the Harvard University libraries in Cambridge counting only as one.1 The merest skimming of these entries indicates that all the activities of man may be studied from abundant accumulations of written records held by these institutions, some of them vast, some small, some general in their scope, others highly specialized. Among the fields in which there are distinguished holdings—one may say that specialists will neglect them only at their peril—are, first of all, American history and American literature, most of the sciences and the history of science, law and medicine, theology and church his- tory, the fine arts, finance and industry, maritime life, education, and reform.

    1 The Woman in the Wilderness The Further Development of Christian Apocalypticism I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. — The Revelation of John, 22:13 Pope Urban II stood before an extraordinary assemblage of high Church officials and French nobles at Clermont in 1095 to implore them to come to the aid of Constantinople, beleaguered by a Seljuk Turkish army, and then liberate the holy city of Jerusalem from Muslim rule. “[A] race from the kingdom of the Persians, an accursed race, a race wholly alienated from God” has long occupied the spiritual seat of Christendom, slaughtering God’s chil- dren “by pillage and fire,” he reminded them in stark, ominous tones. They have taken many survivors into doleful slavery “into their own country” and “have either destroyed the churches of God or appropriated them for the rites of their own religion.” In language that was pointedly both apocalyptic and millenarian, Urban rallied the French nobles, who reportedly cried out, “God wills it! God wills it” as he promised that the Christian recovery of Jerusalem would mark the advent of the Millennium. While the French nobility was likely more motivated by the prospect of conquering “a land flowing with milk and honey,” commoners and peasants throughout Western Europe took the eschatological significance of what became the First Crusade to their hearts. With bloodthirsty zeal the crusading armies harried and massacred Rhineland German Jews on their way to Constantinople in 1096, some of the Christians doubtless taking literally the prediction in Revelation 19 that all who did not follow Christ would be “slain by the sword.” This notion further inspired them in the war against the Muslim population of Palestine as they carved out the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem by 1099, and embarked upon subsequent crusades that have come to characterize the history of medieval A Dream of the Judgment Day.

    JOHN DARBY AND THE WHIG CANON I A celebrated series of books by the English commonwealthmen of the seventeenth century was published between 1698 and 1700. The series included major editions of works by John Milton, Algernon Sidney, and James Harrington, and the civil war memoirs of Edmund Ludlow, Denzil Holles, John Berkeley, and Thomas Fairfax. Collectively these texts have become known as the ‘whig canon’.1 Over the following century this set of writings would profoundly shape the development of republican thought on both sides of the Atlantic.2 The texts of the whig canon would be cited approvingly by thinkers as diverse as Bolingbroke and the founding fathers of the American constitution.3 At their original moment of publication, however, the series was designed to bolster opposition to the consolidation of power by the court whigs under William III.     international journal of military history and historiography 39 (2019) 7-33 IJMH brill.com/ijmh Britain, Austria, and the “Burden of War” in the Western Mediterranean, 1703–1708 Caleb Karges* Concordia University Irvine, California [email protected] Abstract The Austrian and British alliance in the Western Mediterranean from 1703 to 1708 is used as a case study in the problem of getting allies to cooperate at the strategic and operational levels of war. Differing grand strategies can lead to disagreements about strategic priorities and the value of possible operations. However, poor personal rela- tions can do more to wreck an alliance than differing opinions over strategy. While good personal relations can keep an alliance operating smoothly, it is often military necessity (and the threat of grand strategic failure) that forces important compro- mises. In the case of the Western Mediterranean, it was the urgent situation created by the Allied defeat at Almanza that forced the British and Austrians to create a work- able solution. This evening [March 15] I desire your attention to a consideration of the effects of the same solvent principle upon that other great textile material, wool. The lecture of two years ago was illustrated by the pro- cesses themselves, practically performed before your eyes. It is our intention this evening to follow out the same plan and to illustrate and, so far as may be, prove by experiment the statements which shall be made. It is our intention to scour upon the platform various speci- mens of wool, and as well, to dye before you such colors as can be fixed within a time which shall not demand, upon your part, too much of that virtue, patient waiting.
