PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. Colosseum – 5 x Live in Concert – Restored & Remastered in 2020 Colosseum sind fraglos eine der beeindruckendsten Live-Bands, die der Autor je auf der Bühne erleben durfte – und trotz Reunions und anderer „zweiter Chancen“ (vgl. JCM) hat man sie gefühlt doch trotzdem einfach viel zu selten erlebt. Das ist auch nicht mehr aufholbar, seit Kopf, Seele und Sticks der Band in Gestalt von Jon Hiseman 2018 viel zu früh das Zeitliche segnete – übrigens unmittelbar nach einem weiteren ausgezeichneten Konzert… Und was kann in einer solchen Situation überhaupt Trost bieten, was kommt da wie gerufen? Bislang unbekannte Live- Aufnahmen natürlich! Doch nicht etwa fragwürdiges Bootleg- Gelumpe, sondern gehobener Standard von Repertoire Records. Und was vermutlich noch erheblich wichtiger ist: von keinem Geringeren remastered and restored as from our very own Joachim Heinz Ehrig alias Eroc! Colosseum – Live At The Boston Tea Party (49:27, CD, Repertoire Records 2020) It was indeed „The Summer of ’69“ (13.08.69)! Schlagzeug- „Gladiator“ Jon Hiseman und Saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith hatten sich bei der heute allein schon wegen der sich ergebenden Band-Stammbäume hyper-legendären Graham Bond Organisation kennengelernt, wo Hiseman 1966 immerhin so eben mal Ginger Baker abgelöst hatte. Und trafen sich beiJohn Mayall’s Bluesbreakers wieder – einem schier unglaublichen Talentschuppen, wo man zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten auch Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Robben Ford oder Ainsley Dunbar hätte über den Weg laufen können. Im Frühjahr ’68 fühlten die beiden sich dann reif für ihr eigenes Ding und rekrutierten mit Tony Reeves (Bass) einen von Jons ältesten Kumpels und mitDave Greenslade einen bislang mehr dem Jazz verhafteten aber erwiesenen Tasten- Zauberer.

A study of kit drummers' identities, practices and learning Gareth Dylan Smith Institute of Education, University of London Submitted for PhD 1 ABSTRACT Drummers have largely been neglected in scholarly literature on music and education, despite being active in large numbers in popular music and having an increasing presence in the music education arena. The study explores the identities, practices and learning of kit drummers in the UK from an emic perspective, using a mixed methodological approach with a focus on qualitative sociological enquiry drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis and grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 teenage drummers and 12 adult drummers; both age groups were interviewed to allow for consideration of whether adults' reflections on their formative years differ greatly from those of teenage drummers today. Secondary data were gathered from a brief questionnaire conducted with 100 more drummers to support and contextualize the richer interview data. Data were also taken from relevant biographies, audio/visual media and journalistic sources.

In December 1973, it added guitarist Allan Holdsworth (recently with Jon Hiseman’s Tempest, and previously Nucleus) to its line-up, which then consisted of Soft Machine founding member and keyboardist Mike Ratledge, along with pianist and saxophonist Karl Jenkins, bass player Roy Babbington, and drummer John Marshall. Jenkins and Ratledge then composed a whole new repertoire, which the band road-tested on extensive tours of North America and continental Europe in the first half of 1974. That material eventually made up Soft Machine’s eighth recording, the first not named after its order of release: the album Bundles, widely acknowledged as a jazz-rock / fusion classic. When released by EMI’s Harvest Label in early 1975, Bundles would secure Soft Machine’s role in the transcontinental jazz-rock pantheon alongside Return To Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra in the USA, and Nucleus, Brand X, and Isotope in the UK. Soft Machine’s status in the international jazz/rock avant-garde was widely apparent even before Bundles’ official release.
