(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices. -
Les Hanamachi
Les hanamachi Des quartiers « réservés » La ville de Kyôto comporte cinq hanamachi ( 花 街 , villes fleurs) où vivent les geisha et que l'on appelle ensemble Gokagai ( 五 花 街 ). Le plus célèbre d'entre eux est Gion- kobu ( 祇 園 甲 部 ), suivi de Ponto-chô ( 先 斗 町 ) et Kamishichiken (上七軒). Viennent ensuite Gion-higashi (祇 園 東 ) et Miyagawa-chô ( 宮 川 町 ). On y ajoute parfois l'ancien quartier réservé de Shimabara (嶋原), actuellement inactif. Ces quartiers comptent encore de nos jours un peu moins de 200 ochaya qui emploient environ 250 geiko et maiko. Les hanamachi ont chacun un blason appelé mon ( 紋 ), ou kamon (家紋), de même que les okiya. On peut les voir sur les lanternes ou les noren ( 暖 簾 , rideaux d'enseigne) des bâtiments des hanamachi. Les geisha aussi arborent ces blasons par L'ochaya Ichiriki お茶屋一力 exemple sur le col de leur kimono, celles qui sont indépendantes en ayant un qui leur est propre. On y parle le kyo-kotoba ( 京 言 葉 ), dialecte de Kyôto, que les nouvelles arrivées se doivent d'apprendre si elles ne le connaissent pas. Mon des hanamachi Gion Les quartiers de Gion se situent près du sanctuaire Yasaka-jinja (八坂神社). Les mon de Gion sont symbolisés par une couronne de dango ( 団 子 , boulettes de riz). Celui de Gion-kobu se différencie par son initiale ko (甲), au centre. Les premières ochaya de Gion apparurent en 1665. Le quartier connu son âge d'or pendant la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Plus de trois mille geisha travaillaient dans les quelques sept cents ochaya. -
K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2250–2269 1932–8036/20170005 K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation BENJAMIN HAN Concordia University Wisconsin, USA This article examines the transnational popularity of K-pop in Latin America. It argues K- pop as a subculture that transforms into transcultural fandom via digital mediation, further resulting in its accommodation into Latin American mass culture. The article further engages in a critical analysis of K-pop fan activism in Latin America to explore the transcultural dynamics of K-pop fandom. In doing so, the article provides a more holistic approach to the study of the Korean Wave in Latin America within the different “scapes” of globalization. Keywords: K-pop, fandom, Latin America, digital culture, Korean Wave The popularity of K-pop around the globe has garnered mass media publicity as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” reached number two on the Billboard Charts and became the most watched video on YouTube in 2012. Although newspapers, trade journals, and scholars have examined the growing transnational popularity of K-pop in East Asia, the reception and consumption of K-pop in Latin America have begun to receive serious scholarly consideration only in the last few years. Numerous reasons have been explicated for the international appeal and success of K-pop, but it also is important to understand that the transnational and transcultural fandom of K-pop cannot be confined solely to its metavisual aesthetics that creatively syncretize various genres of global popular music such as Black soul and J-pop. K-pop as hybrid music accentuated with powerful choreography is a form of visual spectacle but also promotes a particular kind of lifestyle represented by everyday modernity in which social mobility in the form of stardom becomes an important facet of the modernization process in Latin America. -

CHAPTER 1 U.S.-CHINA GLOBAL COMPETITION SECTION 1: A GLOBAL CONTEST FOR POWER AND INFLUENCE: CHINA’S VIEW OF STRA- TEGIC COMPETITION WITH THE UNITED STATES Key Findings • Beijing has long held the ambition to match the United States as the world’s most powerful and influential nation. Over the past 15 years, as its economic and technological prowess, dip- lomatic influence, and military capabilities have grown, China has turned its focus toward surpassing the United States. Chi- nese leaders have grown increasingly aggressive in their pur- suit of this goal following the 2008 global financial crisis and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Xi Jinping’s ascent to power in 2012. • Chinese leaders regard the United States as China’s primary adversary and as the country most capable of preventing the CCP from achieving its goals. Over the nearly three decades of the post-Cold War era, Beijing has made concerted efforts to diminish the global strength and appeal of the United States. Chinese leaders have become increasingly active in seizing op- portunities to present the CCP’s one-party, authoritarian gover- nance system and values as an alternative model to U.S. global leadership. • China’s approach to competition with the United States is based on the CCP’s view of the United States as a dangerous ideologi- cal opponent that seeks to constrain its rise and undermine the legitimacy of its rule. In recent years, the CCP’s perception of the threat posed by Washington’s championing of liberal demo- cratic ideals has intensified as the Party has reemphasized the ideological basis for its rule. -

Cada vez hay más personas que coleccionan fotos de éste fenómeno. - Los coches no pueden aparcar en las aceras. Deben hacerlo en parkings o dentro de los edificios. - En los hoteles y apartamentos suelen dejar los paraguas gratis. - No hay papeleras por la calle, pero está todo muy limpio. - Baños: o Hay baños por todas partes y están todos (o casi) impecables. o NO tocar el botón rojo: es para llamadas de emergencia.
