Zamindars, businessmen, and bhadralok as curators of theIndiannationinSatyajitRay’s Jalsaghar ( The Music Room)∗ GAUTAM GHOSH The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China Email: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract The Bengali bhadralok have had an important impact on Indian nationalism in Bengal and in India more broadly. Their commitment to narratives of national progress has been noted. However, little attention has been given to how ‘earthly paradise’, ‘garden of delights’, and related ideas of refinement and nobility also informed their nationalism. This article excavates the idea of earthly paradise as it is portrayed in Satyajit Ray’s 1958 Bengali film Jalsaghar, usually translated as The Music Room. Jalsaghar is typically taken to depict, broadly, the decadence and decline of aristocratic ‘feudal’ landowners (zamindars) who were granted their holdings and, often, noble rank, such as ‘Lord’ or ‘Raja’, during Mughal or British times, representing the languid past of the nobility, and the ascendance of a ∗ Parts of this article were presented by invitation at the Asian Studies Centre, Oxford University; the South Asian Studies Centre, Heidelberg University, and the Borders, Citizenship and Mobility Workshop at King’s College London. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis focuses on the militarisation of a secessionist movement involving Kashmiri militants and Indian military forces in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The term militarisation in this thesis connotes the militarised state and, more primarily, the growing influence of the military within the state that has profound implications for state and society. In contrast to conventional approaches that distinguish between inter and intra-state military conflict, this thesis analyses India’s external and domestic crises of militarisation within a single analytic frame to argue that both dimensions are not mutually exclusive but have common political origins. Kashmir, this thesis further argues, exemplifies the intersection between militarisation’s external and domestic dimensions.

At the same time, they tried to control other areas. One particularly prized area was the city of Kanauj in the Ganga valley, located near river Ganga. Hence, Statement 2 is correct. For centuries, rulers belonging to the Gurjara-Pratihara, Rashtrakuta and Pala dynasties fought for control over Kanauj. The Three Kingdoms involved in the tripartite struggle are Gurjara-pratiharas, Rastrakutas (to the south) and Pala dynasty to the west. Paramaras were not involved in this struggle. Hence Statement 1 is incorrect. Because there were three “parties” in this long drawn conflict, historians often describe it as the “tripartite struggle”. Capital of Rashtrakutas is Malkhed/Manyakheta situated on the deccan peninsula between Godavari and Krishna rivers. Statement 3 is correct. Pala’s capital is Paharpur. Refer map on Page 16. Current Policy & Reserve Rates Repo Rate 6.25% Reverse Repo Rate 5.75% Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) 4.00% Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) 20.50% Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) 6.75% Bank Rate 6.75% Below are the basic definitions of the Policy Rates - (i) Repo Rate – It is the rate at which RBI lends money to commercial banks. (ii) Reverse Repo rate – It is the rate at which RBI borrows money from commercial banks. (iii) Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) – The share of net demand and time liabilities (deposits) that banks must maintain as cash balance with the Reserve Bank. (iv) Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) – The share of net demand and time liabilities (deposits) that banks must maintain in safe and liquid assets, such as, government securities, cash and gold. The first part has already been published in 1966. It is the second part that is presented in this book. This publication is entirely a compilation of the statements furnished by various agencies like the Departments of Health Services, Police, Local Bodies, Revenue and the Devaswom Boards of Travancore and Cochin. This is something like a directory of fairs and festivals in the State arranged according to di'>tricts and taluks, which might excite the curiosity of the scholars who are interested in investigating the religiou, centres and festivals.
