ABSTRACT TAYLOR, MARY CLAIRE GARRISON. Mycophagous Soil Fauna for Biological Control of Soilborne Pathogenic Fungi in Greenhouse and Transplant Crops. (Under the direction of Shuijin Hu and H. David Shew). The objective of this project was to investigate the feasibility of using dairy cow compost as a soil amendment in conjunction with nematodes, collembolans, and mites as an alternative to chemical control for soilborne fungal pathogens and their diseases in greenhouse and transplant crop production systems. Three model systems were used; 1) Tomato attacked by Pythium ultimum, 2) Vinca and Impatiens attacked by Rhizoctonia solani, and 3) Bell pepper attacked by Phytophthora capsici. Five experiments total were conducted using three types of faunal treatments; 1) Nematode Aphelenchus avenae, 2) Collembolan (unidentified), and 3) Mite (unidentified) and three rates of dairy cow compost; 1) 4% by volume, 2) 8% by volume, and 3) 16% by volume. The fungal-feeding nematode Aphelenchus avenae can effectively suppress seedling damping-off caused by Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Phytophthora capsici to a level equivalent to the standard fungicide treatment. Compost rate affects the disease suppression efficiency of the faunal treatments likely through impacting the mesofauna’s survival and growth in the seedling rhizosphere. Disease suppression capacity resulting from mesofauna may be extended to the field. ISSN 1676-0611 Two of the most economically important superfamilies of phytophagous mites are Tetranychoidea and Eriophyoidea, which have species represented in rubber trees in Brazil. In this paper we review the literature concerning the mite fauna registered on rubber trees in that country. The source was the information available on literature, but also data from exploratory samplings in Goianésia, State of Goiás, and from a triennial survey with monthly samplings in Cedral, State of São Paulo. Among the phytophagous mites the most important and abundant species were Calacarus heveae and Tenuipalpus heveae. Seven of the nominal species reported belong to the family Tetranychidae. Eutetranychus banksi and Oligonychus gossypii were very numerous in several crops studied, although with no evident damage to the leaves caused by the former.

Based on the market access request submitted by Ecuador, we considered the pathway to include the following processes and conditions: fruit will be harvested by hand and washed with cool water, and damaged or ripe fruit will be culled. All processes and conditions considered during the risk assessment process become minimum conditions necessary for entry of avocado. Based on the scientific literature, port-of-entry pest interception data, and information from the government of Ecuador, we developed a list of all potential pests with actionable regulatory status for the continental United States that are known to occur in continental Ecuador (on any host) and to be associated with avocado plant species (anywhere in the world). Of these, we found four organisms that have a reasonable likelihood of being associated with avocado following harvesting from the field and prior to any post-harvest processing, and thus may follow the pathway.

11 IPM POTENTIALS OF MICROBIAL PATHOGENS AND DISEASES OF MITES LEO P. S. VAN DER GEEST IBED, Section Population Biology University of Amsterdam, 1098SM Amsterdam, The Netherlands Abstract. An overview is given of diseases in mites, caused by infectious microorganisms. Many pathogens play an important role in the regulation of natural populations of mite populations and are for this reason subject of research on the feasibility to develop such pathogens to biological control agents. Several examples are given of successful application of pathogens for the control of mite pests, but also failures are discussed. Most studies concern fungal pathogens of tetranychids and eriophyids; some of these fungi are possible candidates for biological control agent of species of noxious mites. An interesting group of pathogens form the intracellular symbionts: bacteria that may cause unusual effects in their hosts, such as parthenogenesis, feminization, male killing and incompatibilities. This group of bacteria is present in many invertebrates species and are presently widely studied as new molecular techniques have become available that make detection of such symbionts possible. Attention is also given to quality control of beneficial mites that are being used in integrated control programs. Beneficial mites, as e.g. predatory mites, may also be infected by microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, microsporidia), resulting in poor performance of the predator. Prospects for the application of pathogens in IPM systems are discussed. 1. INTRODUCTION As other organisms, Acari may also be subject to disease, usually caused by pathogenic microorganisms. Our knowledge on pathogens of mites, however, is still fragmentary, in contrast to what we know about pathogens of insects.

Entomol. 34(4): 953Ð962 (2005) ABSTRACT The exotic Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, is an invasive plant that readily displaces native vegetation and develops monospeciÞc stands in central and south FloridaÕs native ecosystems. Despite prior arthropod surveys of S. terebinthifolius in its adventive range, little is known concerning the acarofauna associated with the weed in Florida. Leaves of S. terebinthifolius also vary in the presence and development of domatia, which are small morphological structures that may beneÞt mites. We assessed the development of new mite associations with S. terebinthifolius in Florida and quantiÞed within-plant distribution of these arthropods. Mites inhabited over one-third of the sampled leaves with greatest species diversity in the Prostigmata, followed by Mesostigmata, Astigmata, and Cryptostigmata, respectively. Fungivorous mites (dominated by Lorryia formosa) were the most common feeding guild, predatory mites were the most diverse, and herbivorous mites were rarely encountered during the survey. Interior leaves supported greater populations of mites than exterior leaves, whereas height of leaves in the canopy did not affect mite distributions. Foliar domatia varied in development and occurred on nearly two-thirds of the leaves sampled. More than three- quarters of all mites collected were found on domatia-bearing leaves, which supported three times more mites per leaf than leaves without domatia.
