CONTENT ANALYSIS OF THE JOURNAL OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH IN MUSIC EDUCATION: 1980 – 2019 A Dissertation presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music University of Mississippi by Gail A. Simpson 2019 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The purpose of this descriptive study is to explore the trends in historical research over a period of forty years (1980-2019) as presented in peer-reviewed Journal of Historical Research in Music Education (JHRME). This content analysis is geared towards examining categories of research conducted particularly within the last decade (2010-2019) with comparisons to previous studies. Adopting categories and definitions from Heller (1985), McCarthy (1999, 2012), and Stabler (1986), five questions guide the focus of investigation to include historical periods of study (e.g., 20th century), individuals, events, outcomes, and process variables, i.e., the teacher, the learner, the interaction of the teacher and the learner, the content of instruction, and the environment of instruction. Seventy-nine articles published between 2010 and 2019 were read, categorized, and codified. Cliometric analysis is conducted to note trends in biographies, curricular methods and materials, music education development, and historiography. Title analysis and non-random, purposive sampling of the 204 articles published between 1980 and 2009 is done to compare examples with findings from this study and that of McCarthy (1999, 2012). Of the five process variables, three are noted as having consistently high frequencies of exploration. However, one category is significantly underserved both in focus and in measurement of effectiveness of music education over time in the United States and Internationally. Noting the actors, social history, and new historicism, the challenge is presented to researchers to extend the focus of research to include voices not yet represented in the literature, often unrecognized due to geographic, linguistic, and cultural barriers. ii DEDICATION This work is dedicated to my parents Rev. Not so different? Harumichi YAMADA, Professor, Tokyo Keizai University Tokyo Keizai University, 185-8502, Japan [email protected] Japan has been often referred to as the second largest national market for the popular music business, only after USA. This market has unique aspects in many ways, but the most distinct character is its domestic orientation. While some Asian nations share interests in Japanese popular music for certain degrees, Japanese musicians may hardly be known in the Western world. The language barrier is the largest factor to explain the situation, but it might not be the only reason. Though almost all musical elements in modern Japanese popular music originated in the Western world, they are domesticated or re-organized to produce something quite different from the original Western counterparts. Taking cases from the history of popular music in 20th century Japan, I will describe some typical acclimatizing processes of Western music elements. Introduction of Western music into the schools Japan experienced a rough and rapid process of modernization, or Westernization, in late 19th century, especially after the Meiji Restoration in 1867. The introduction of Western music was one aspect of that modernization. While some elements of Western music like military bands and church hymns arrived a little earlier, their influence was limited. Most ordinary Japanese people were exposed to Western style music through school education, which was under the control of the Ministry of Education.

Master of Music (Music Theory), May, 1987, 101 pp., 2 tables, 8 figures, 44 musical examples, 83 titles. This thesis treats Daniel Read's music analytically to establish style characteristics. Read's fuging tunes are examined for metric placement and structural occurrence of dissonance, and dissonance as text painting. Read's comments on dissonance are extracted from his tunebook introductions. A historical chapter includes the English origins of the fuging tune and its American heyday. The creative life of Daniel Read is discussed. This thesis contributes to knowledge of Read's role in the development of the New England Psalmody idiom. Specifically, this work illustrates the importance of understanding and analyzing Read's use of dissonance as a style determinant, showing that Read's dissonance treatment is an immediate and central characteristic of his compositional practice.     WESTERN INFLUENCE ON JAPANESE ART SONG (KAKYOKU) IN THE MEIJI ERA JAPAN JOANNE COLE Master of Music Performance (by Research) Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Music The University of Melbourne December 2013 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music Performance (by Research) Produced on Archival Quality Paper Abstract The focus of this dissertation is the investigation of the earliest Western influences on Kōjō no Tsuki (Moon over the Castle) the composition of Japanese composer Rentaro Taki. Kōjō no Tsuki is an example of an early Japanese Art Song known as Kakyoku composed during Meiji Era Japan (1868 - 1912). The dissertation is divided into four chapters with an introduction. Chapter One explores the historical background of the Meiji Era Japan, highlighting the major impact of the signing of the treaty between the United States of America and Japan in 1853. This treaty effectively opened Japan to the West, not only for trade, but for exchange of social, political and cultural ideas. The resulting evolution that occurred in Japan from feudal society to one of early twentieth century is illustrated by reference to articles and writings of the Meiji Era. The second chapter examines the Japanese Art Song form Kakyoku using the example of Rentarō Taki’s song, Kōjō no Tsuki. This chapter presents an argument to illustrate, from an anthropological viewpoint, why this new form of Japanese Art Song could have its own identity based on Western ideas and not be categorised as a Japanese Folk Song known as Minʹyō or Shin Minyō.

    The International Grieg Society International research conference in Bergen, 2007 The Reception of Grieg’s Music in Japan Hikari Kobayashi This presentation is a report which is based on my research on the first performances of Grieg’s works in Japan and on the process of the reception of Grieg’s music. These aspects will be illuminated by focusing on performing and educational activities, and on publications of those days. 1. Grieg’s works performed at the earliest stage in Japan In Japan, the performance of Grieg’s music started quite early. Presumably, it began in the 1890s. It is documented that one of his pieces was played at the Concert Hall in the Tokyo Music School (Tokyo Ongaku Gakko) on December 17, 1893,1 though it is not known which piece this was. However, there is a possibility that this performance at the Tokyo Music School, a school which played a pivotal role in Japan in the education of and research on European art music in those days, was the very first performance in Japan of Grieg’s music. Further, at the graduation ceremony on July 7, 1894, his “Springar” was performed by violins, though which of his springars was played is not known. At a concert on December 12, 1896, “Anitra’s Dance” from Peer Gynt was performed by six Japanese violinists. At the graduation ceremony on July 8, 1899, “The Death of Aase” and “Anitra’s Dance” were performed by a string orchestra consisting of graduates and students. I also examined the role that context played in shaping students’ perceptions, and sought potential principles underlying meaning and value in instrumental ensembles. Over the course of six months I conducted a series of in-depth, semi- structured interviews with six student wind ensemble members, five student guitar class members, and six jazz band members at three high schools in Winnipeg, Canada. I interviewed the participants’ music teachers and school principals, observed rehearsals and performances, and spoke informally with parents and peers. Drawing upon praxial and place philosophies, I examined students’ experiences within the context of each music group, and looked for themes across the three groups. What students perceived to be meaningful about their participation was multifaceted and related to fundamental human concerns. Students valued opportunities to achieve, to form and strengthen relationships, to construct identities as individuals and group members, to express themselves and communicate with others, and to engage with and through music. Although these dimensions were common to students in all three groups, students experienced and made sense of them differently, and thus experienced meaningful participation in multiple, variegated ways.

    SMT-Based Generation of Film Scores From Lightweight Annotations Halley Young Department of Computer Science University of Pennsylvania Pennsylvania, PA 19104, USA [email protected] September 2020 1 Introduction The film industry turns out over $200 billion of films every year, and a sub- stantial portion of that is spent creating appealing film scores [14]. According to studies by Stuart Fischoff, himself both a film writer and scholar of me- dia psychology, music scores to films account for much of our understanding of the emotional impact of film scenes as well as characterizations of different characters, locations, and events [5]. However, there has not been substantial research on formalizing the way that film scores produce these effects. While there has been some research on producing film scores semi-automatically, these approaches are either statistical (and suffer the same problems as most deep- learning based music, such as lack of memorable material or global structure), or don't include a background theory of film composition, and thus require ex- tensive manual specification by the composer [13] [6]. This study addresses the formalization of a theory of film music, written in a decidable fragment of first- order logic. This theory allows for the generation of appropriate film music from extremely lightweight annotations. 2 Input and Output The input to the algorithm is a specification. A specification contains an arbi- trary lines, each of which contains a list of variables, a specified duration time in seconds, and optionally a description of the scene (used only for documentation and not by the algorithm).
