Welcome to the 52nd Congress of ISAE We welcome you to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and hope that you will enjoy the conference and the Island. It has been an honour and a pleasure to make the arrangements for this conference. We have prepared an interesting program based on your submissions and a series of events that will provide entertainment and an opportunity to experience the unique local culture. The main theme of the Congress, “Ethology for Health and Welfare,” was chosen to reflect the prominence that applied ethology has in the field of animal welfare and to encourage the development of applied ethology in studies to promote animal health. The location of this year’s Congress within the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island has provided the focus on veterinary aspects of ethology and welfare. Canada is blessed with abundant and diverse wildlife that has been managed by humans throughout the country’s history. These interactions are integral to Canadian culture and traditions. We have taken the opportunity to highlight how ethological studies have contributed to the management and welfare of wild animals. As scientific studies have advanced our understanding of applied ethology, a major role of the ISAE is to apply our science to real-world issues that affect the management of animals. Our session on putting ethology into practice is designed to stimulate discussion of best practices and challenges in achieving this goal. Applied ethology continues to develop and expand, and we have showcased recent developments in play behaviour and other key topics. The Wood- Gush Lecture will provide the stimulation that comes from developments and approaches used in allied disciplines and the challenges that can arise from differing thinking on some potential implications of our increased understanding of how animals perceive and experience their world. We are grateful for the sponsorship that we have received, for the help from colleagues at the University of Prince Edward Island and Dalhousie University, and to the University of Prince Edward Island for agreeing to host this year’s Congress. We thank you for travelling to Atlantic Canada and hope that your experiences here will be memorable.
