Edition: September 2018 Spelling Bee National Final On the 29th June, Routes into Languages held the National Spelling Bee final 2018 on the Sidgwick site of Cambridge University. Year 7 students, their teachers and parents travelled to Cambridge to take part. Emma, Faye, Freya and Nathan competed against 100 other year 7 students. This was the first time that Egglescliffe School competed in Spanish, French and German after our competitors won the regional final. They had to spell as many words in their target language as possible in one minute. They all gave an excellent account of themselves in a very competitive situation and two of our contestants were only a few words away from placing in the top four. Our pupils were all winners as they were among the top 100 pupils out of 28,684 who took part in the competition nationally. Well done to Emma, Faye, Freya and Nathan for being such great representatives of Egglescliffe School. The students took part in a variety of workshops from campaigning to debating in House of Commons style. In May and June Scholars were lucky enough to have two careers talks from some of our very own parents on architecture and also mental health therapy. Over the course of the year over 80 Scholars from year 7 -10 have attended lectures at Teesside University on: Health, Sport Science, Law, Robotics and Forensic Science. The programme for this year has been created and students will take part in a range of exciting workshops from Aeronautical Engineering to Future Technologies. Language Ambassadors – Teaching Opportunities The Language Ambassadors are in the process of creating an evidence file for their language leaders’ qualification. One of the things they needed to do to gain the award was to teach their language to other people. In July, 16 students went to Bowesfield Primary in Stockton (where they had previously supported their Mother Tongue Day in February) to teach the entire school their languages! We had Farsi being taught to Year 6, Chinese to Year 5, Romanian to Year 4, Yoruba to Year 3, Spanish and Japanese to Year 2 and Urdu to Year 1. The students absolutely loved the experience producing detailed lesson plans and resources and the teachers at Bowesfield couldn’t believe how fantastic every lesson was and how engaged the students were. The Language Ambassadors have now been asked to teach again in two other schools, so watch this space for their next teaching successes. Year 9 ‘This is not for you’- Yes it is!! A group of fabulous Year 9 students have had the opportunity to take part in a bespoke education project with the London theatre company Graere. This opportunity gave students the chance to develop their historical and drama skills over three days working with three amazing facilitators Robin, Josh and Nerys. The students loved the amazing games and rhythm activities which they took part in. The students were amazed by the unheard stories of soldiers who came back from war disabled and the challenges which faced soldiers such as Flora Sandes who is the only British woman to have been recorded as serving in World War I. The students culminated their project with an outstanding presentation of their work to Year 8 where they shared their poetry and the story of Flora. All students who were involved should be very proud of their achievements. This production was an excellent opportunity to see one of our GCSE plays live on stage. The Year 11 students found the interpretation of the J.B Priestley’s play thought provoking and it challenged their understanding of the playwright’s underlying message and themes. The theatre staff commented that the behaviour of our students was impeccable, so well done to all those who attended and a big thank you to the staff who accompanied them. It was a late night, but well worth it! Netball Success On 13th September, U16A Netball team came 2nd in their pool at the District Tournament. The same evening saw the U16B team win all their games to win their pool and take 1st place! On 27th September, U14B Netball team remained undefeated in all 7 games to take the 1st place at their District Tournament. Well done girls! The Danger Tree – Year 10 Trip The English & History Departments organised several trips to The Danger Tree Art Exhibition in Stockton. This exhibition commemorates the centenary of the end of World War 1. Our students were invited to develop their understanding of GCSE Power and Conflict poetry by immersing themselves in the art, poetry and the personal accounts of soldiers fighting on land, air and sea, in the defence of our country. This was an amazing opportunity for our students as this immersive art exhibition combines personal testimony of soldiers from the North East, with large scale artist’s images of war in mixed media and also provided students with the opportunity to handle artefacts from the conflict and broaden their understanding of the experiences of young soldiers. Our students then had the opportunity to produce their own responses to war in the form of sketches, poetry and descriptions. It was a moving experience for all involved and through the art and technology, students now have a better understanding of the effects of war on people who were both fighting and who were waiting back at home. Accelerated Reader Congratulations, Isaiah and Daniel who are in Year 8. Both have read over 1,000,000 words on Accelerated Reader since we started back in September. European Day of Languages and the GREAT European Bake-off Did you know that there are over 30 different languages spoken by pupils at Egglescliffe School? Did you know that 26th September was the European Day of Languages? The aim of the day was to join the rest of Europe in celebrating culture, languages and diversity and here at Egglescliffe, we did just that! For up to date information please visit our website – egglescliffe.org.uk Edition: September 2018 Year 7 tucked into a French breakfast of croissants, pain au chocolat, macarons and baguettes whilst tutor groups across the school completed a languages quiz and got to discover a little more about the linguistic talents of our inspirational Language Ambassador team. Pupils from KS3 to KS5 were also invited to take part in the Association for Language Learning’s annual poster competition, which this year was based around the theme of ‘A recipe for… (happiness)’. Pupils in each Key stage had to create a poster around the theme, either in one of our three taught languages or a language spoken at home. Egglescliffe pupils have either won this regional competition or been placed as runners-up every year…watch this space! The theme of recipes continued as the European Day of Languages turned into a week, culminating in a fantastic display of baking talent in our European Bake-off! Pupils of Egglescliffe dusted off their recipe books to join in and were tasked with baking a cake with a European theme. Our very own Prue Leith (Mrs Oyston) and Paul Hollywood (Mr White), along with our Language Ambassadors, had the difficult job of selecting winners from the incredible number of amazing entries. We were massively impressed by how many pupils got involved and by the egg-cellent quality and talent on display. Jess in Year 8 was crowned star baker with her fantastic French themed cake and mini-croissants. All of the cakes went on sale at break and lunch times and have raised in excess of £150, which will be donated to supporting treatment for our past student, Evie Whittaker.
