Joëlle Léandre, musicienne en résistance La sélection des bibliothécaires autour de la conférence musicale organisée le 14 avril 2015 en partenariat avec le CRR. D’emblée s’est affirmée une parole forte, vive, une pensée en mouvement, ample, véloce : Joëlle Léandre telle qu’on la voit, telle qu’on l’entend en concert. Le geste, le temps, l’explosion de l’instant, elle fait partie de ceux (John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, Daunik Lazro…) qui nous ont fait pleinement prendre conscience de ce que pouvait être l’improvisation, ses (en)jeux, ses géographies intérieures, ses merveilles. Elle se définit comme une musicienne en vibration, en résistance. « Créer, c’est résister » dit Gilles Deleuze, rappelle-t-elle. Libre et rigoureuse, elle brasse et embrasse la contrebasse d’un même geste passionné. Joëlle Léandre Contrebassiste, improvisatrice et compositrice, formée à la musique d’orchestre et à la musique contemporaine, Joëlle Léandre a joué avec l’Itinéraire, 2e2m et l’Ensemble Intercontemporain de Pierre Boulez. Des compagnonnages riches et multiples (avec John Cage, Merce Cunningham ou Morton Feldman, aussi bien qu’avec Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy ou John Zorn) ont forgé un parcours musical foisonnant, exigeant où la dualité compositrice/improvisatrice est sans cesse remise en question. Les compositeurs John Cage, Betsy Jolas et Giacinto Scelsi lui ont composé des pièces. Joëlle Léandre a aussi creusé un sillon singulier dans le jazz et l’improvisation avec Derek Bailey, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Evan Parker, Steve Lacy, Fred Frith, Irène Schweizer, John Zorn et bien d’autres encore, ou en solo. Elle a aussi beaucoup écrit pour la danse, le film, le théâtre, et réalisé plusieurs performances multidisciplinaires. De 1981 à aujourd’hui, Joëlle Léandre a enregistré près de 150 disques. Okanagon revêt un caractère incantatoire. Les instruments sont joués avec des résonateurs (pour la harpe et le tam-tam dont le résonateur doit produire une sonorité rauque et grave ), traités de façon inhabituelle (les notes graves de la harpe sont prises avec les deux mains , d’où une position spéciale de l’instrumentiste), éventuellement amplifiés pour certains, et parfois utilisés en tant que purs instruments de percussion. Si l’on ajoute encore les couleurs spécifiques (différentes baguettes pour le tam-tam, jeu avec l’ongle ou un plectre en métal pour la harpe) et les accords très particuliers ( scordatura ) de certaines cordes, on obtient le décor sonore étrange d’une œuvre que Scelsi conseillait de considérer comme un rite ou, si l’on veut, comme le battement de cœur de la terre .   • The History of Women in Jazz in Britain
    The history of jazz in Britain has been scrutinised in notable publications including Parsonage (2005) The Evolution of Jazz in Britain, 1880-1935 , McKay (2005) Circular Breathing: The Cultural Politics of Jazz in Britain , Simons (2006) Black British Swing and Moore (forthcoming 2007) Inside British Jazz . This body of literature provides a useful basis for specific consideration of the role of women in British jazz. This area is almost completely unresearched but notable exceptions to this trend include Jen Wilson’s work (in her dissertation entitled Syncopated Ladies: British Jazzwomen 1880-1995 and their Influence on Popular Culture ) and George McKay’s chapter ‘From “Male Music” to Feminist Improvising’ in Circular Breathing . Therefore, this chapter will provide a necessarily selective overview of British women in jazz, and offer some limited exploration of the critical issues raised. It is hoped that this will provide a stimulus for more detailed research in the future. Any consideration of this topic must necessarily foreground Ivy Benson 1, who played a fundamental role in encouraging and inspiring female jazz musicians in Britain through her various ‘all-girl’ bands. Benson was born in Yorkshire in 1913 and learned the piano from the age of five. She was something of a child prodigy, performing on Children’s Hour for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) at the age of nine. She also appeared under the name of ‘Baby Benson’ at Working Men’s Clubs (private social clubs founded in the nineteenth century in industrial areas of Great Britain, particularly in the North, with the aim of providing recreation and education for working class men and their families).

The workshop includes: 1. an informal discussion with Joëlle Léandre and the Improvisation, Community and Social Practice (ICASP) reading group; 2. three days of intensive improvisation workshops with Joëlle Léandre; 3. a communal supper for all participants at Sala Rossa; 4. a final concert at Sala Rossa on Monday October 10th; and 5. a sound recording of the final concert for their personal use. This workshop is open to any interested musicians. Experience in contemporary improvisation is preferred, but not required. An interest and a willingness to explore new musical experiences is of utmost importance. Musicians accepted to the workshop will be expected to attend all Saturday, Sunday and Monday events.     IRÈNE SCHWEIZER INTAKT RECORDS Irène Schweizer writes jazz history, and this catalogue documents the musical work of the jazz pianist. Demonstrating a responsibility for the music, Intakt Records, in collaboration with the artist, has made a carefully curated selection of work accessible. Given the abundance of artistic production, this is a project that is still far from being completed. The compilation reveals the main focuses of Irène Schweizer’s music. The great solo recordings, which present the broad spectrum of the musician. The piano-drums works with the most important percussionists in jazz today. The feminist mani- festos with musicians like Joëlle Léandre, Maggie Nicols, Marilyn Crispell and Co Streiff. The close connection to the tradition of black American jazz with Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Andrew Cyrille, Hamid Drake, Fred Anderson and George Lewis.
