As a Child You Have No Way of Knowing How Fast Or Otherwise The
A FOREIGN COUNTRY: GROWING UP IN RHODESIA Nigel Suckling Draft: © January 2021 1 I – MUNALI – 5 II – LIVINGSTONE – 43 III – PARALLEL LIVES – 126 IV – LUSAKA – 212 V – GOING HOME – 244 APPENDIX – 268 2 FOREWORD As a child you have no measure of how fast the world around you is changing. Because you’re developing so quickly yourself, you assume your environment is static and will carry on pretty much the same as you grow into it. This is true for everyone everywhere, naturally. Most old people can, if suitably primed, talk indefinitely about the changes they’ve seen in their lifetimes, even if they’ve never moved from the place where they were born; but some environments change more drastically than others, even without a war to spur things along. One such was Northern Rhodesia in southern Africa in the 1950s and 60s. As white kids growing up then we had no way of knowing, as our parents almost certainly did, just how fragile and transient our conditions were – how soon and how thoroughly the country would become Zambia, with a completely different social order and set of faces in command. The country of course is still there. In many ways its urban centres now look remarkably unchanged due to relative poverty. The houses we grew up in, many of the streets, landmark buildings and landscapes we were familiar with are still recognizably the same, much more so in fact than in many parts of Europe. What has vanished is the web of British colonial superstructure into which I and my siblings were born as privileged members, brief gentry on the cusp of a perfectly justified and largely peaceful revolution that was soon to brush us aside. -

Jarred Meyer Overcomes a Broken Leg to Achieve a Boyhood Dream
JARRED MEYER OVERCOMES A BROKEN LEG TO ACHIEVE A BOYHOOD DREAM Jarred Meyer is a rare commodity in South African football and has attracted a lot of attention since joining PSL side Jomo Cosmos. That’s because Meyer is one of a few white players currently playing in South Africa’s professional football league. Recent years have seen a dearth in white footballing talent and many experts and football pundits have been scratching their heads trying to figure out why this talent is not coming through the ranks anymore compared to previous years where we had the likes of Mark Fish, Neil Tovey, Eric Tinkler, Andrew Tucker to name but a few. No one has been able to find the answer to this million dollar question but 23 year-old Jarred Meyer is perhaps the pioneer of the resurgence. Jarred has shown great resolve and courage to overcome a broken leg and to finally achieve his dream of playing professional football, a dream that he has achieved through the Nedbank Cup Ke Yona Team Search. “I started at Bloemfontein Celtic with the under 17’s and then under 19’s but I could not break into the first team, so I went to play in the Third Division and that’s where I was spotted by the then Free State Stars coach Steve Komphela who is now at Kaizer Chiefs.” Meyer finally believed that his dream had come true after signing a pre-contract with Ealla Koto but his joy was short-lived when a horrendous tackle at training left him with a broken leg and he was eventually released by Free State Stars. -

Sport & Recreation
SPORT & RECREATION 257 Pocket Guide to South Africa 2011/12 SPORT & RECREATION Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) is the national department responsible for sport in South Africa. Aligned with its vision of An Active and Winning Nation, its primary focuses are on providing opportunities for all South Africans to participate in sport; managing the regulatory framework; and providing funding for different codes of sport. The SRSA has a number of flagship programmes through which it implements its objectives. These programmes touch the lives of millions of South Africans, from schoolchildren participating in school sport, communities sharing in the benefits of mass participation pro- grammes and events, and organisations benefiting from the SRSA’s financial and logistical support. Initiatives Golden Games The 2011 Golden Games, part of the SRSA’s Older Persons Programme, were held in the Free State in October 2011 with the theme Celebrating Active Ageing. The Golden Games is a national event where persons older than 65 compete in various sporting codes at provincial level. Codes that form part of the Golden Games include soccer, athletics (800 m and 4x100-m relay), brisk walk, duck walk, passing the ball, rugbyball throw, jukskei and goal shooting. The Western Cape was crowned the 2011 Golden Games champion. All-Africa Games The 10th All-Africa Games took place in September 2011 in Maputo, Mozambique, and featured 20 sporting disciplines in which 53 countries participated. Events for people with disabilities also featured in swimming and athletics. Team South Africa finished first on the medals table, with 62 gold medals, 55 silver and 40 bronze, totalling 157 medals. -
