The discovery of this new entity allowed us to propose another species of Geodina, until now a monospecific genus, and produce the first 28S rDNA genetic data, which supports this species is related to genus Wynnea in the Sarcoscyphaceae. Key-words – 1 new species – Ascomycota – Sarcoscyphaceae – Sub-tropical zone Caribbeans – Taxonomy Introduction A study started more than 10 years ago in the area of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) by one of the authors allowed us to identify several interesting fungal species, both Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. Angelini & Medardi (2012) published a first report of ascomycetes in which 12 lignicolous species including discomycetes and pyrenomycetes were described and illustrated in detail, also delineating the physical and botanical characteristics of the research area. -

Systematics of the Genus Rhizopogon Inferred from Nuclear Ribosomal DNA Large Subunit and Internal Transcribed Spacer Sequences

Spatafora Rhizopogon is a hypogeous fungal genus that forms ectomycorrhizae with genera of the Pinaceae. The greatest number and species of Rhizopogon are found in coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwestern United States, where members of the Pinaceae are also concentrated. Rhizopogon spp. are host-specific primarily with Pinus spp. and Pseudotsuga spp. and thus are an important component of these forest ecosystems. Rhizopogon includes over 100 species; however, the systematics of Rhizopogon have not been well understood. Currently the genus is placed in the Boletales, an order of ectomycorrhizal fungi that are primarily epigeous and have a tubular hymenium. Suillus is a stipitate genus closely related to Rhizopogon that is also in the Boletales and host specific with Pinaceae.I examined the relationship of Rhizopogon to Suillus and other genera in the Boletales. Infrageneric relationships in Rhizopogon were also investigated to test current taxonomic hypotheses and species concepts. Through phylogenetic analyses of large subunit and internal transcribed spacer nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences, I found that Rhizopogon and Suillus formed distinct monophyletic groups. Rhizopogon was composed of four distinct groups; sections Amylopogon and Villosuli were strongly supported monophyletic groups. Section Rhizopogon was not monophyletic, and formed two distinct clades. Section Fulviglebae formed a strongly supported group within section Villosuli. -

Some Critically Endangered Species from Turkey
Fungal Conservation issue 4: February 2014 Fungal Conservation Note from the Editor This issue of Fungal Conservation is being put together in the glow of achievement associated with the Third International Congress on Fungal Conservation, held in Muğla, Turkey in November 2013. The meeting brought together people committed to fungal conservation from all corners of the Earth, providing information, stimulation, encouragement and general happiness that our work is starting to bear fruit. Especial thanks to our hosts at the University of Muğla who did so much behind the scenes to make the conference a success. This issue of Fungal Conservation includes an account of the meeting, and several papers based on presentations therein. A major development in the world of fungal conservation happened late last year with the launch of a new website (http://iucn.ekoo.se/en/iucn/welcome) for the Global Fungal Red Data List Initiative. This is supported by the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, which also made a most generous donation to support participants from less-developed nations at our conference. The website provides a user-friendly interface to carry out IUCN-compliant conservation assessments, and should be a tool that all of us use. There is more information further on in this issue of Fungal Conservation. Deadlines are looming for the 10th International Mycological Congress in Thailand in August 2014 (see http://imc10.com/2014/home.html). Conservation issues will be featured in several of the symposia, with one of particular relevance entitled "Conservation of fungi: essential components of the global ecosystem”. There will be room for a limited number of contributed papers and posters will be very welcome also: the deadline for submitting abstracts is 31 March. -

Van Vooren2, M. Carbone3, K. Hansen1 Key words Abstract The easily recognised genus Otidea is subjected to numerous problems in species identification. A number of old names have undergone various interpretations, materials from different continents have not been compared and Flavoscypha misidentifications occur commonly. In this context, Otidea is monographed, based on our multiple gene phylogenies ITS assessing species boundaries and comparative morphological characters (see Hansen & Olariaga 2015). All names ITS1 minisatellites combined in or synonymised with Otidea are dealt with. Thirty-three species are treated, with full descriptions and LSU colour illustrations provided for 25 of these. Five new species are described, viz. O. borealis, O. brunneo parva, O. ore- Otideopsis gonensis, O. pseudoleporina and O. subformicarum. Otidea cantharella var. minor and O. onotica var. brevispora resinous exudates are elevated to species rank. Otideopsis kaushalii is combined in the genus Otidea. A key to the species of Otidea is given. An LSU dataset containing 167 sequences (with 44 newly generated in this study) is analysed to place collections and determine whether the named Otidea sequences in GenBank were identified correctly. Fourty-nine new ITS sequences were generated in this study. The ITS region is too variable to align across Otidea, but had low intraspecific variation and it aided in species identifications. Thirty type collections were studied, and ITS and LSU sequences are provided for 12 of these. A neotype is designated for O. -
